The E28 (2nd Generation) BMW 5 Series was the one car, more than any other, that established and defined the mid-size sport sedan segment. By its second evolution of the 5 Series, BMW had nailed the recipe of a luxury sedan that was large enough to haul four adults comfortably, while sporty enough to easily outdrive its contemporaries and satisfy the requirements of the performance driver. The 528e was the combination of lightweight, economy, and fantastic BMW driving dynamics. Under the hood was the venerable M20B27 in-line 6-cylinder engine, one of BMW’s most reliable powerplants. 1988 model years had the Super ETA engine, featuring M20B25 “i” pistons, and the 885 head with “e” internals. The Super ETA is the easiest engine to build into a factory M20 stroker motor, combining the best of both the M20B27 and M20B25 engines. Relatively low production numbers and the fact that the E28 was so good that many literally had the wheels driven off of them, makes surviving examples rare. Pristine examples are even harder to find, especially in a 528e.

This 1988 528e is an outlier example in time-capsule condition. It is absolutely stunning in Alpine White over the Pacific blue. It’s further accented by Euro bumpers, a Hartge front valance, aftermarket BBS replica rear valance, fender flares, Ground Control camber plates, Bilstein Sport Shocks, Dinan Springs, and concave BBS RC wheels. It was originally sold on August 17, 1988 for $29,250 (that’s $62,158 in today’s money!). After financing it at 12% over seven years, the total would have been $43,781.60 ($93,039 in today’s money)—for a 528e! The point of this is that this 528e was extremely precious to the first owner and it clearly shows. It remained with that owner until 2015 and is by far the cleanest E28 we have ever had at Glen Shelly—much cleaner than any of the E28 M5s that have crossed the hangar floor. It comes with an Auto Record booklet documenting every single service, along with fuel fill ups, tire pressures, and notes early from the car’s life. It came to Colorado in 1993, being maintained by Gebhardt BMW. A summary of dealer services dating back ten years is also included in the records. The Carfax shows a new owner in 1993, but that was the loan being paid off, and a copy of that title verifying this is included in the records. In 2015 it was sold through Vintage Motors of Lyons to a BMW motorcycle collector who built it into its current form. He swapped over a lot of the rare parts from another E28 he had, of which the invoices are also included in the records. It is in nearly perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition. The extra torque of the 2.7-liter suits the E28 chassis perfectly, along with improved airflow and the higher redline of the Super ETA. The advantage of the Super ETA is that you build it into a factory stroker motor, which we can also do if desired—but I wouldn’t touch a thing. It makes me smile just the way it is every time I drive it. Extras include fourteen-inch BMW Bottle-cap wheels with Falken Sincera tires, color-matched sheep skin seat covers, a BMW car cover, BMW jumper cable toolkit, and many spare parts.

Exterior

Alpine White looks fantastic; it accentuates the E28’s form over chrome accents. The paint is in excellent shape; it has always clearly been stored indoors and spared exposure to harsh conditions. There are no glaring paint defects, paint chips, or peeling. We had the lower leading edge of the front valance repaired after it was cracked on a curb, but it looks perfect, as do the fender flares and rear valance. There is no rust and all VIN tags are in place, with the exception of a DOT-R hood and a missing VIN tag on the passenger front fender. The Carfax is clean, and whatever the reason, it was clearly cosmetic. The trim is in excellent condition, with only minor UV fade. The Euro bumpers and chrome work are brilliant. The headlight lenses have minor pitting, but are crack-free. The markers, indicators, and taillights are excellent condition. The windshield glass has no cracks, but it does have minor pitting. The side and rear windows are tinted, which has protected the interior from UV exposure. The BBS RC wheels are in excellent shape with minor paint chips and minimal curb rash on the passenger side wheels. The center caps are present with BBS emblems. Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires are worn evenly with excellent tread. The original Bottlecap wheels are nearly perfect (some of the best I’ve ever seen) with chrome center caps and Falken Sincera tires with good tread remaining.
 

Interior

The interior of this E28 is likewise in exceptional condition. Interiors were a weak spot of E28s and this one is nearly perfect. Pacific Blue suits the Alpine white exterior perfectly. There are no odors other than that fantastic classic BMW leather smell; it has never been smoked in. The carpets are free of rips or stains and have been protected by factory floor mats. The dashboard has the typical cracks that most E28s do, but a soft fitted dash cover from Bavarian Autosport covers it. I do have a crack-free dashboard I would be willing to include and install for extra. The instrument cluster gauges and lights work, including the odometer and there are no check engine or ABS lights. The brake lining light bulb is inop. The 13-button board computer and the radio have good LCD screens with good backlighting. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower motor bearings chirp slightly. All power door locks work, as do the power windows. The door cards are in excellent shape. The power mirrors do not work, you can hear the motors operating, but they do not move the mirror correctly. The seat leather is in excellent condition, with minimal creasing or wear. There is one area of torn piping on the driver’s side backrest, but it is covered by tape. Color-matched sheepskin seat covers are also included. All power seat functions, including the power headrests work. The shifter knob is perfect, as are the shift knob and e-brake boots. An Aluminum UUC shift knob is also included, but it is so heavy you could kill a man with it—perhaps leave it in the glovebox for security on late nights! The owners’ manuals are all present, along with a complete factory toolkit and the aforementioned extras.

Mechanical

When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This E28’s stewardship has been proven in spades. We could find few gripes on our inspection. The timing belt was last replaced at??? The maintenance logs show frequent and regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and strict adherence to BMWs Inspection I and II intervals.

The M20 idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. If it sits, a weak check-valve in the fuel pump requires a little cranking before the engine startes, but a replacement fuel pump is included in the spare parts. It does not warrant replacement at this time. It doesn’t leak or spot. The clutch take up is correct and the UUC shifter is crisp and direct. There is no transmission or driveline whine, and the factory limited slip differential aids in corning. The Dinan / Bilstein suspension is firm, but compliant and the brakes are strong with lots of pad thickness and rotor run out remaining. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in Colorado. As it sits, this is a turn-key E28. We would like to find a buyer who will continue to enjoy and care for years to come.
