The BMW E39 generation 5 Series was the pinnacle BMW 5 Series. The E39 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60 5 Series. In 2001, post-facelift (life cycle impulse) examples received Angel Eye headlights, LED Celis taillights, and other minor revisions. The sport wagon, or “touring,” was offered with 6-cylinder and V8 engines starting in 1999. While not necessarily rare, E39 wagons are much less common than their sedan counterparts, with roughly 13,000 wagons sold versus 181,000 sedans through the entire US production run. Of those, only 2,363 were 540i wagons—arguably the most badass wagon BMW ever brought to US shores. The Sport Package included an M Sport Steering Wheel, Sport Self-Leveling Suspension, Sport Seats, Shadowline Trim, and 17 x 8 inch Style 32 wheels. E39s were so good that many literally had the wheels driven off of them, and the wagons were no exception. Well-maintained, cosmetically clean examples are rare in a dwindling population of surviving examples. As BMW has ceded the US market to ugly, bloated, top-heavy crossovers, the wagon has become the enthusiast’s choice for a car that hauls ass while hauling kids, dogs, or whatever else will fit in its large cargo hold.

BMWs are like airplanes, in that proper car and maintenance are much more important than strictly age or mileage. This is especially true with a V8 E39. This 2001 540iT Sport is one of those examples, thanks to its excellent ownership pedigree. It looks and drives like a car with a fraction of its actual miles. Titanium Silver Metallic (often referred to by its periodic table name TiAg) always looks exceptional. Tinted windows, Sport Package Shadowline trim and Style 32 wheels only make it pop more, while post-facelift Angel Eye headlights and Celis taillights complete the visuals—even in the dark. It was originally ordered with the Sport, Premium, and Cold Weather packages, along with host of other options—all of which still work perfectly. It has been fastidiously maintained since new, with records to prove it. Major items have been recently addressed, including the timing chain guides, cam and crank seals, valley pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gasket. The self-leveling suspension is leak-free and fully functional. I am selling it on consignment for a fellow BMW enthusiast and BMW CCA member. I also know the previous owner, who is a friend and Glen Shelly regular. The Carfax is clean, and it is 100% stock other than a USA Spec aux input to the factory stereo. It is by far one of the nicest 540iTs on the market, and is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.

Titanium Silver is one of those colors that always looks fantastic. The paint on this example is in exceptional condition. It presents like a much younger, lower mileage car. The only notable imperfection is some scuffing on the lower font bumper cover. There are a few other minor scratches and dings, but nothing close to what you would expect with a higher mileage car. The leading edge of the hood and the lower front bumper cover are protected by clear bra, and there is no Colorado pitting as a result. The clear bra was replaced in 2016; it is crystal clear. The VIN tag is in place, the Carfax is clean, and it has never been in accident. All trim is present and in good condition. 540iTs with the sport package got shadowline trim that looks great. The Angel Eye headlights were recently replaced; the lenses are crystal clear and the halo rings have no failed filaments. The fog lights, marker lights, and Celis taillights have good lenses and all lights operate correctly. The windshield has no cracks or pitting. The side and rear windows are perfectly clear. The driver’s side kidney grill is slightly loose with the hood raised (a common issue). The Style 32 sport wheels are in excellent shape with no bends or curb rash, but here are minor areas of paint discoloration. They are wrapped in Nitto Motivo ultra high performance all season tires with lots of tread remaining. A set of un-mounted winter tires are also included with the sale.

The Black Standard leather interior is in excellent condition. Most E39 wagons hauled kids, dogs, etc. and the interior took a beating as a result. This interior is consistent with the exterior, presenting like a younger and lower mileage car. Turn the key and the M Sport steering wheel lowers into place. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears; BMW floor mats are included. The dashboard is in good shape, with the exception of slight lifting of the passenger airbag cover. The wood trim is also in good shape; it has only one faint crack on the driver’s side door trim. If wood trim is not your speed, I have a set of brushed aluminum E39 trim I will include for extra. The seat leather has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat functions and the seat heaters work. The instrument cluster has no failed pixels; there are no warning lights and no system check messages. The stereo has one line of dead pixels in the upper left, but it doesn’t affect the readable text. The BMW Business stereo sounds fantastic, especially with Dynamic Sound Processing (church hall is my favorite program). A USA spec iPod aux input is installed. The HVAC displays have no failed pixels; the heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. The OEM cup holders are both broken, but E39 cup holders were worthless. Instead, it is equipped with the desirable BMW accessory extending cup holder from the center console storage compartment. It’s not only super cool, but it will actually hold your coffee. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The sunroof operates on command and the shade is on the tracks. The rear carpet has no wear or stains. The rear hatch cargo divider is missing, but the factory tool kit, jack, and spare tire are all present. All owners manuals are present, along with two keys.

When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This is especially true with an E39 5 Series. That said, the E39 was probably the last solidly reliable 5 Series. This 540iT has records dating to the original purchase on 12/18/2001. The records show proper BMW stewardship in the form of regular oil changes, inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance. Nearly every component has been addressed at some point. Recent maintenance includes:

  • Fuel Pump
  • Fuel Filter
  • Fuel Relay
  • Timing Chain, Guides, and Tensioners
  • Cam Seals
  • Crank Seals
  • Valve Cover Gaskets
  • Intake Manifold Gaskets
  • Valley Pan Gasket
  • Oil Pan Gaskets
  • Expansion Tank Cap
  • Outside Air Temperature Sensor
  • Power Steering Reservoir and Lines

The timing chain guide service is an expensive and important service, the fact that it didn’t need to be done until recently is an important indicator of proper oil changes and maintenance by the previous owners.

As it sits no common E39 540iT issues are present. The M62TU engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The transmission shifts smoothly in automatic, sport, or steptronic mode. The self level suspension is compliant, does not sag even after a long sit, and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. Like any E39, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but it is a turn-key car.

Clean E39 540iTs are a dwindling commodity; finding a clean, well-optioned one that does not need $3000 of work is a hard proposition. This one certainly isn’t cheap, but it does represent good value if you consider its condition and maintenance history. We would like to find a new owner for it who will enjoy, care for it and appreciate it as it has been.
