2003 BMW (E46) M3 Coupe exterior photo

The E46 generation M3 was the last of a legacy of normally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder M cars that defined the marque. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and, at the time, it produced the highest horsepower per liter for a normally aspirated production engine. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis. The M3 also got exclusive suspension, brakes, and wheels that gave it formidable performance. Even today, a well-driven E46 M3 can hold its own against much more powerful and modern performance cars. The 2001, 2002, and early 2003 model years had a rod bearing recall that was remedied by mid-2003. The SI B covering this was extended into June of 2003 build dates. A mid-lifecycle update starting with March of 2003 (2003.5) model years included several new features, the most notable being LED taillights. Clean, low mileage, 6-speed manual examples in rare colors and options carry the highest premiums.

Summary

This 2003 Silver Grey Metallic M3 meets those criteria in spades. Silver Grey replaced Steel Grey for the 2003 model year, but what really sets this M3 apart is the Anthracite Alcantara M cloth and leather interior. The embedded M colors are an exclusive tradition dating back to the original E30 M3 Evo editions, and they make this E46 M3 even more exclusive. Nineteen-inch BMW Competition Package wheels, rear trailing arm limiters, and a UUC short shifter and DSSR are the only mods from stock. This is a Canadian Market M3 that we imported from Calgary. Canadian Market M3s were US-spec cars with option code 838, Canadian Version. The only major differences are a speedometer in kilometers and daytime running lights. I have a letter from BMW North America stating that it complies with all US safety and emissions standards, including California. It is fully federalized and comes with a clean Colorado title. The original owner purchased from Calgary BMW in May of 2003 and kept it until 2006. It remained with the second owner until we bought it in January of this year. It has always been a fair weather driver, being spared winter exposure. Regular services and routine maintenance have always been accomplished at either at Calgary BMW or high-end BMW specialist shops. I have documentation of all maintenance. In 2004 the rod bearings were replaced in accordance with the recall. Other significant maintenance items include the driver and passenger airbag recalls, VANOS, timing chain tensioner, rear shocks and trailing arm bushings (with limiters), and power steering lines. In preparation for sale we gave it an Inspection II, including replacing all fluids and a valve adjustment. We also cleaned up some cosmetics bringing the body to near-perfect condition. The market has diverged on E46 M3s, with rare and low mileage examples fetching considerable premiums, while poorly cared for examples have plunged into the low teens. I have priced this example aggressively for what it is. I would like to find a new owner who appreciates that and will enjoy it for years to come.

Exterior

Silver Grey Metallic is one of the best E46 M3 colors and it always looks fantastic. The paint on this example is in pristine condition. In preparation for sale we addressed several cosmetic imperfections, resulting in virtually perfect exterior. The worst was a dent in the right front fender. The original fender was repaired and painted to match. I have pictures of it before, during, and after included in the records. We also refinished the front and rear bumper covers due to scuffs and corrected several scratches on the left rear fender. Ferrari specialists Maranello Auto Refinishing in Calgary performed all of the work. Pictures and documentation are included in the records. The only remaining imperfections are a tiny ding in the right rear fender and another on the top of the passenger door. All body panels are original and the factory VIN tag and stamps are in place. There is no rust. The rear subframe was inspected when Inspection II was performed and it shows no signs of failure. All trim work is in place. The windshield is free of cracks and pitting. The headlight lenses are clear and we replaced both fog lights when we refinished the front bumper cover. All remaining light lenses are also crack-free and the LED taillights look great. The Style 163 ZCP wheels are straight and true with no curb rash. They are wrapped in Nitto Motivo ultra high performance tires with lots of tread remaining.

Interior

The M cloth interior is the defining feature of this M3 and it is in excellent condition. The alcantara M cloth is susceptible to premature wear if not cared for, but this example has always been properly attended to—which is a good thing, because replacement components are difficult to acquire. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet has no stains or tears and has been protected by factory BMW floor mats, which are in good condition. The seats have no failed stitching or tears in the cloth centers or leather bolsters, and there is only minor creasing visible on the driver’s side bolster (pictured on our website if you are reading this elsewhere). All power seat functions work, as do the seat heaters. The adjustable side bolsters are a very nice option. The rear seats are in great shape, and are the desirable fold-down type. The M steering wheel has no excessive wear or failed M-colored stitching. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and warning or check engine lights. The auto-dimming rear view mirror functions and has not leaked any fluid. The headliner does not sag. The Harman Kardon premium sound system sounds great. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower motor does not chirp, and the final stage resistor functions correctly (common issues). The lower center console panel does not have any wear and tear (another common issue). The short shifter and DSSR are a very nice upgrade, and the shift knob has very minor wear on the leather. All power windows, door locks, and the sunroof operate correctly. The door cards are not pulling apart, and the matching M cloth has no wear. The trunk tool kit is complete except for the socket and tire-mounting tool (but I can find these). All factory manuals are present, but only one key FOB is included. I can order a second through BMW at a discount if desired.

This is a turn-key E46 M3. All preventative maintenance is up to date and all common issues have either been addressed or are not present. It has just had Inspection II completed, including the S54 valve adjustment and oil, brake fluid, coolant, gearbox, and differential fluids in accordance with Mike Miller’s Lifetime Maintenance Schedule. The rod bearings were replaced with the updated bearings under recall in 2004, although there is ambiguity about whether they actually needed to be done, based on the build date. Other common items like the VANOS, timing chain tensioner, and power steering system were also addressed for oil leaks. The gearbox seals were replaced at 47K miles. The rear springs and trailing arm bushings were also replaced. All recalls, in addition to the rod bearings, including the DME module programming, LSZ (light switch center), and both airbags have been complied with. I have a print out of all dealer services, along with services completed at independent BMW shops organized in a 3-ring binder that is included with the car. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline (once the oil is warmed up, of course). It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS is quiet. The clutch and shifter are factory-crisp. The brakes are firm, the suspension is compliant, and there is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. As it sits, this is a turn-key E46 M3; I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across country. From what I can tell, it has never been tracked or autocrossed—but hopefully the new owner will remedy that. Performance driving instruction and coaching are available through us if desired. Alternatively, tuck it away and preserve it as an investment, as E46s are primed for significant appreciation in the next decade.

The color combo, condition, and options make this E46 M3 an outlier example. We would like to find a new owner who will appreciate and care for it as it has been, and enjoy it for years to come.
