The 1984-1991 BMW 3 Series, known generationally as the E30, is the one model more than any other that earned BMW the Ultimate Driving Machine reputation. E30s are one of our specialty vehicles at Glen Shelly Auto Brokers. We personally have restored, rebuilt, and sorted a dozen E30s over the years. The “iX” was released to the U.S. market for the 1988 model year and was BMW’s first all-wheel drive model—it is unstoppable in the snow. What makes it so good is not the all-wheel drive but the E30’s perfectly balanced and telepathically communicative chassis. It is light, tossable, and wonderfully controllable. Adding all-wheel drive to the mix only makes the iX that much better. Limited production numbers and exposure to the cold weather climates most have lived in have decimated the population of clean iXs, making good ones few and far between.

This Alpine White over Natur leatherette 1991 325iX coupe is one of the nicest examples we’ve had at Glen Shelly. With only 113,700 miles, it is in time-capsule condition. Notable upgrades include a Turner Conforti Performance chip, Bilstein shocks, Nardi wood steering wheel (a Momo Prototipo is also available), short shifter, wooden shift knob, Husco armrest, silver-ringed instrument gauges with red needles, Coco floor mats, and a Magna Flow exhaust. Factory options consist of the late-model LED slider CM5908 stereo with Premium Sound, the 6-button onboard computer, and the ski-pass through. The Carfax shows it was originally registered on March 14, 1991, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The records pick up in August of 1992, showing it moving to Durango and being dealer-serviced at Sandia BMW and an independent shop, Animas Automotive. It remained with that owner until 2017, when it changed hands again within the same community of friends and a brief stint in Southern California. It came to us on consignment from the current owner. The mileage is documented throughout the service records. Recent maintenance includes a valve adjustment, driveline oils, power steering hoses and reservoir, spark plugs, AC service, fuel filter, and a water pump/timing belt service. The condition is pristine; it is in true collector-grade condition. All of the paint is original, and all VIN tags are in place. As it sits, this is an outlier example of a 325iX. We’d like to find a new owner who will appreciate it for the next chapter of its story.

The exterior of this 325iX is amazing. All paint is original and in excellent condition. Close scrutiny reveals some rock-chipping on the lower front valance and rear wheel fender arches. All paint is original, and all VIN tags are in place. The Carfax is clean, and all VIN tags are in place except for the driver’s fender due to my repainting it. Thanks to the dry Southwestern climate, there is no rust. There is typical surface corrosion on bolt heads and exposed metal. All common spots like the battery tray, floor boards, fenders, and lower windshield cowling are clean. All trim is in place, and the headlight, tail light, and fog light lenses are crack-free. The windshield is perfect and crack-free, and the side and rear windows are lightly tinted and original glass. The Style 5 iX basketweave wheels are in excellent shape with no curb rash. All center caps are present. They are wearing Dunlop Direzza DZ102 with 90% tread remaining.

The interior is also in excellent condition. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked in. The carpet has no tears or stains. The dashboard is crack-free, sans one tiny ¼” crack in the corner of the parcel shelf. The Natur leatherette comfort seats are perfect, front and rear. The steering wheel is an excellent upgrade with the matching wooden shift knob. All instrument cluster functions work, including the odometer. The 6-button onboard computer works. The factory stereo is the desirable LED slider CM5908 type. It sounds great through the premium sound speakers. The rear antenna functions correctly. The shifter and boot have minimal wear, as does the leather cup holder and Husco armrest pad. The window and sunroof switches work, as does the central locking system. The heat blows warm, and the air conditioning blows cold. The trunk carpet is clean, and the tool kit is complete. A 2-inch records booklet, the original owner’s manuals, and the factory tape deck cleaning kit are included. Several keys are included with the sale.

The mechanical pedigree of this 1991 325iX matches its cosmetic condition. The records show regular services and frequent maintenance throughout its life. The list of recent maintenance includes a valve adjustment, driveline oils, power steering hoses and reservoir, spark plugs, AC service, fuel filter, and a water pump/timing belt service. The timing belt is nearing the replacement interval due to age, but the belt looks healthy from behind the rubber timing cover, and it could be comfortably deferred for at least several years. The engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strong to redline. The clutch take-up is correct, and the short shifter is tight and precise—not the spoon in the bowl of spaghetti that some E30s are. The Bilstein suspension is firm and compliant, and the brakes are strong. There are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations. The exhaust is rust-free. A considerable amount of time and money has been spent on this E30 and it shows as a result. We would like to find a new owner who will appreciate what it is and enjoy it for years to come.
