The Mitsubishi Delica is the one of the coolest, most capable, unique, and simply the best 4x4 vans for the buck—period! These awesome little vans are legal in the United States thanks to the 25-year import exemption. They offer the cool-factor of the Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro combined with Japanese reliability and turbo diesel power. The fourth generation L400 Delica, known as the Delica Space Gear, was an evolution of the L300 Delica, but with a moncoque chassis and many technological upgrades. The most significant was the 2.8-liter intercooled turbo diesel 4M40 engine, good for 232 pound feet of torque at only 2,000 RPM. Coupled to a proper high and low four-wheel drive system with a center-locking differential the L400 had serious off-road capabilities. In Exceed trim, it was outfitted with inclinometer / inside and outside air temp gauges, a front bull bar, power windows, air conditioning with rear controls, seven passenger seating with middle captain’s chairs and stowable fold-flat rear seats. The tall ride height and short overhangs give it legitimate 4x4 capability in what looks like the most badass mini-van you’ve ever seen. These vans have a cult following worldwide and Canada has been importing them for the last decade thanks to a 15-year import exemption rule. Parts and repair guidance can be sourced through Internet suppliers north of the border and online forums. The Delica fits the Colorado outdoor lifestyle perfectly, making a great rig for camping, cycling, rock climbing, skiing, or just hauling 7 adults in comfort and style. Mitsubishi Delicas are one of our niche vehicles at Glen Shelly Auto Brokers. This 1994 Delica L400 Exceed is a fantastic example, with only 227,157 Kilometers (141,148 Miles). It features a 3-spoke Nardi steering wheel, boost / EGT / coolant temp gauge (a must for mountain driving), 14 PSI manual boost controller, turbo timer, Pioneer stereo, and freshly mounted BF Goodrich T/A KO2 off-road tires. A separate wheel set with OEM-sized tires is also included. The L400 is perfectly suited for Colorado altitudes thanks to its intercooled turbo engine. Other notable options are the 3-gauge pod featuring inclinometer, and inside and outside air temperatures, voltmeter gauges, front and rear climate controls, and middle captains chairs and stow-able rear seats that fold flat for sleeping. In preparation for sale it received an oil change, a valve cover gasket, reseal of the rear of the front transfer case output shaft seal, fresh differential and transfer case fluids, the left steering rack boot, four-wheel drive vacuum solenoid, and R134 seals and charge of the rear air conditioning system. I wouldn’t say its fast, but the intercooled L400 pulls stronger than the earlier non-intercooled turbo Delicas. It also has a noticeable torque improvement over other alternatives, such as a Vanagon Syncro. Everywhere it goes, the Delica gets thumbs up, smiles, and lots of attention. If you really want to blow people’s minds, you can put your dog in the left front seat and act like you are along for the ride!
The green paint is very good condition and is presentable. There are numerous small imperfections, dents, and dings typical of its age and some clear coat fade on the roof. The front bumper cover has some rock chips, as does the hood, and the rear bumper cover has some waviness above the trailer hitch. The trim has some UV fade, but is presentable, and the bull bar paint is good. There is no notable rust, and other than slight superficial browning on typical undercarriage components. Elsewhere the undercarriage is clean and corrosion-free (undercarriage pics are on our website if you are viewing this elsewhere). The windshield and side glass have no cracks or chips. There are large review mirrors in addition to a rear-parking mirror. The headlight lenses are in good shape, as are the marker and indicator lenses. The wheels are in good condition, but do have some corrosion and the right rear is mis-matched. The BF Goodrich T/A KO2 tires have been freshly mounted with the majority of their tread remaining. The front tires do rub on the fender flares slightly at full steering lock due to being over-sized.
The interior condition is consistent with the exterior. There are no odors. The carpet is in good shape, with no glaring rips or tears. The factory floor mats are present. The seats are in very good shape with no tears or failed stitching, but the driver’s seat does have some moderate wear. The dashboard is crack-free, but the gauge pod does have small cracks and distortion. The inclinometer is frozen in place, but could be easily replaced. The Nardi steering wheel leather is moderately worn. The turn signals also do not cancel as a result of the aftermarket steering wheel. The speedometer has a mph overlay, the odometer is still in kilometers. The four-wheel drive indicator works correctly. The Pioneer stereo sounds great. The head blows warm and the AC blows cold. The power windows and the rear lift gate lock work. The middle captains chairs are in great condition, the rear seats have several small stains. All seats fold flat, making a great space to sleep if you add a sleeping mat or pad. Either can be un-bolted if you want to build out your own bed or cabinets.
Japanese vehicles from the 1990’s are some of the most reliable vehicles of all time. They are the perfect sweet spot of mechanical evolution, but lack the over-complication of modern vehicles. Diesel engines are wonderfully simple and able to endure significant abuse. The Delica is a simple vehicle that can be serviced by any competent diesel mechanic. The transmission shifts smoothly and the four-wheel drive engages on command. Automatic hubs make shifting in and out of four-wheel drive easy. The suspension is compliant and very comfortable on poor roads—not the tooth jarring ride of a Sports Mobile. There is slight clunking over large bumps, but nothing that warrants attention. The brakes are firm. Overall it in great shape, but this is a 25-year old vehicle and will need continued care, which we can help with when the time comes.

Right Hand Drive: Driving a right hand drive vehicle is as easy as left hand drive—don’t be intimidated by it. The Delica is one of the easiest right hand drive vehicles to drive thanks to excellent visibility and ample mirrors. I teach performance driving and would be happy to give any necessary instruction required to develop confidence driving from the right seat.
25-Year Rule Import: Owning a 25-year rule imported vehicle is legal according to Federal regulations, as long as it passes emissions. The only states that have extra requirements are California and Hawaii. California requires 1975 and later vehicles to be CARB legal, which the Delica is not. You would need to have it independently tested ($1500 per test at most labs) and CARB compliant in order to get it CARB certified. Hawaii is even stricter, making it cost-prohibitive to certify a 25-year rule car there.
