The BMW M Roadster was the M variant of the BMW Z3. The Z3 made its public debut in 1995 in the Bond film GoldenEye with a young Pierce Brosnan behind the wheel. The scene with 007 and Natalya (Izabella Scorupco), her hair blowing in the wind, was the picture of top-down motoring. Initial Z3 sales were strong, but it soon became apparent that a more aggressive iteration was in order. BMW M GmbH solved this problem in 1998 with the M Roadster. At its heart was the E36 M3’s 245-horsepower S52B32 inline 6-cylinder engine. Power reached the ground through a manual gearbox (the only option), M-tuned suspension, and a limited-slip differential. When it was time to stop, M3 brakes made short work of the job. The exclusive exterior kit featured a bold front splitter, M badges, staggered Style 40 Roadstar wheels, and a quad exhaust—the first BMW M car to get one. Inside, the exclusivity continued with M Roadster lettering on the doorsills and instrument cluster, an illuminated gearshift knob, and chrome-ringed gauges, including an oil temperature gauge. The end result was one of the best retro-classic roadsters ever made. And because it was based on the Z3, it was produced in the good ‘ole USA in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
This 2000 BMW M Roadster is a wonderful survivor example with only 64,900 miles. Finished in Titanium Silver over Black leather, it is a quintessential M Roadster color combination—understated yet sophisticated and outfitted with the desirable hardtop accentuating its proper roadster form. Other standard kit includes sport-heated seats, Harmon Kardon premium sound, and a limited-slip differential. Gebhardt BMW originally delivered it on June 16, 2000, and, other than a brief stint in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has remained in Colorado ever since. The current owner purchased it in 2004 with 23,456 miles. It has been dealer-serviced at Gebhardt and Schomp BMW, and independent BMW specialists Euro Service. There are receipts for, and our inspection revealed, the majority of the cooling system being replaced. The Carfax reports several minor incidents that have resulted in the hood and several other panels being repainted. All work was done by competent BMW repair shops and is documented in the records. In preparation for sale, we replaced the serpentine belt, a pulley, the cooling fan, and the fan clutch. Outstanding items that could be addressed are intermittent 5th gear lean when cold, a cloudy rear window, the tires have older DOT dates, and the shift knob has moderate wear. The trunk floor spot welds are in good shape, the glovebox has only minor sag, the driver’s seat has minor bushing play, and the center console switch surround is crack-free. As it sits, this is an excellent example of an M Roadster and a blank canvas that could be kept as it is or painted into the vision of the next owner.
This Titanium silver paint is in good condition. Imperfections consist of minor rock chips, scratches, and scrapes. There is light scuffing on the front bumper cover and one small area of cracked paint. Several panels have been repainted, as documented on the Carfax, and the paint gauges are at 3 to 7 mils. The hardtop is in good shape, and the storage stand is included. The convertible soft top is in fair condition, with the rear window being cloudy and some failed stitching. We have an OEM replacement window in stock and can facilitate this replacement at the buyer’s discretion. There is no rust. All VIN and warning stickers are present, except for the hood. All trim is accounted for and in good condition, with light UV fade. The driver’s door handle can be finicky, which we can repair at the buyer’s discretion. The windshield is crack-free with minor pitting. The headlights are functional, also with some pitting. The taillights and indicators are also functional and in good shape. The Style 40 Roadstar wheels are presentable, with minor curb rash. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires with 7-8/32s tread remaining and 2014 DOT dates. We can facilitate replacing these at the buyer’s discretion.
The interior is consistent with the exterior. There are no odors other than that wonderful Z3 leather smell. The hardtop headliner is sagging slightly in spots. The door cards are not separating; the driver’s door card has some wear on the lower panel. The steering wheel has typical wear. The dashboard is crack and fade-free. There is typical glovebox sag, which can be easily repaired. The instrument cluster is also functional and in great shape. All interior power switches work and are undamaged and unfaded. All HVAC controls work; the heat blows warm, and the air conditioning blows cold. The BMW Business CD43 stereo system, including the subwoofer, is functional and sounds great. The center console is also in excellent condition, with hardly any fade to the shifter or handbrake; the switch surround is crack-free. The shifter has moderate wear, but is tolerable. The seats have typical creasing on the outer bolsters, the seat belt guides are functional, and the seat bushings have minor play. All trunk components are accounted for, and the carpet has no foul odors, stains, or rips. There is no tonneau cover. Two keys and the owner’s manuals are present.
This M Roadster has been properly owned and benefitted from regular oil changes and routine maintenance. The S52 engine is one of BMW’s reliable power plants, having none of the rod bearing issues or needing the valve adjustments that later S54-powered M Roadsters did. The engine idles smoothly, pulls strong, and has no VANOS issues. It does not leak, drip, or spot; there are small weeps at the VANOS control line and power steering reservoir. The majority of the cooling system appears to have been replaced, and we replaced the cooling fan. The clutch take-up is correct and it shifts smoothly; there is intermittent 5th gear lean, but it does not need to be addressed at this time. The brakes are firm, and there are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations or whine. The suspension is firm and compliant; the rear shock mounts are nearing the end of their life. The rear trunk floor spot welds are in good shape. Like any M Roadster, it will need and deserves the preventative care and maintenance that all BMWs of this vintage do, but at present, it is properly sorted and ready for its new home.
