2000 BMW Z3 2.3 Roadster exterior photo

The BMW Z3 roadster made its public debut in 1995 in the Bond film GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan behind the wheel. The scene with 007 and Natalya (Izabella Scorupco), her hair blowing in the wind, was the picture of top-down motoring. Time has only been kind to the Z3, aging it into one of the best retro-modern ‘90s-era roadsters. It has the fluid and graceful lines of a proper British sports car, with the raw power and driving dynamics found only in a BMW. Post-facelift non-M Z3s had raised rear fenders exclusive to the 2000 through 2002 model years. The Z3’s driving dynamics resulted from BMW’s focus on giving you exactly what you needed and nothing more. The Z3 cockpit is unapologetically driver-focused, and old-school analog gauges ensure a proper roadster experience. And, best of all, the Z3 was produced in the good ‘ole USA in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

This 2000 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster with only 69,900 miles is finished in Steel Grey Metallic over Black Oregon Leather. Steel Grey was one of the best colors available in the Z3 catalog, one that was more commonly found on the Z3M variants. It is 100% stock and original, featuring the 5-speed manual, limited-slip differential, M sport steering wheel, heated sport seats, Nakamichi stereo playing through Harmon Kardon premium sound system, LeatherZ armrest, LeatherZ door pull armrest pads, and 16-inch Style 29 sport wheels. The 2000 model year was one of the best years in the Z3 timeline, the perfect intersection of technology, evolution, and reliability. It was a cross-over year, featuring the updated post-facelift lines and raised hips, dynamic stability control (DSC) instead of Automatic Stability Control (ASC). Yet, the 2000 model year retained the M52TU (technical update) engines, some of the most reliable BMW engines produced, and had none of the oil consumption issues of the later M54 engines. The M52B28TU was the largest M52 engine, and all Z3s featured aluminum blocks.

Besides a short stint in Red Lodge, Montana, this Z3 has lived in Colorado for its entire life. It was originally delivered in September of 1999. The Carfax is vague on service, but our comprehensive inspection showed it has been well-cared for. The water pump, thermostat, accessory belts, and rollers were replaced at 68K miles in 2014. The front struts, power steering lines, VANOS control line, and front brakes were replaced at 62K miles in 2012. The only items we found that needed immediate attention were an oil service, brake fluid flush, and replacing the driver’s side seatbelt tensioner. As far as typical Z3 issues: the trunk floor spot welds are healthy, the seat bushings are reasonably solid, the subwoofer is not blown, there is only slight 5th gear lean when cold, glovebox sag is minimal, the driver’s seatbelt guide is cracked, and the rear window is opaque (we have a new OEM one in our inventory if replacement is desired). The air conditioning also needs a service. This is an excellent example of a Z3 in a desirable color combo with some very nice options. We’d like to find a new owner who will tell the next chapter of its story.

The Steel Grey Metallic paint is in good condition. The hood driver’s side panels and trunk lid have been repainted; the passenger side panes are original. The paint match is nearly perfect, and the paint gauges are in the 9-11mil range on most of the painted portions, with a few deeper areas in the left rear fender. Imperfections consist of light rock chips and scratches, with heavy chipping, scuffing, and spidering on the lower front lip. There is no rust. All VIN tags and factory warning stickers are present; the driver’s door VIN tag appears to have been removed and reinstalled for painting. The power convertible top functions correctly and is in good shape, having no rips or tears. The rear window is typically opaque; we can install an OEM replacement window if desired. The windshield glass is crack-free with moderate rock chipping. The headlight lenses are slightly opaque. The markers and taillights are crack-free. The Style 29 sport wheels are in good shape with no notable flaws. They are wrapped in older (2011 DOT dates) Continental ExtremeContact DWS all-season tires with 8-10/32s remaining. The rubber is not dry-rotted, and they are worn evenly.

The Black Oregon leather interior is also in good condition. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is protected by matching floor mats. The three-spoke M sport steering wheel is perfect and is the most desirable Z3 steering wheel. The dashboard and trim are in good condition; the fine wood trim has typical hairline cracks, with the worst being on the center console. There are no warning lights and no failed pixels. The heat blows warm, as does the air conditioning; we will further diagnose if desired. The Nakamichi sounds great through the Harmon Kardon premium sound. The subwoofer is not blown. The seats have typical bolster wear but are presentable. There is only slight seat bushing play; the driver’s side seatbelt guide is cracked, but functional. The headliner is in good shape. The trunk floor spot welds are in excellent shape. The owner’s manual, factory tool kit, jack, and spare tire are present.

There are no glaring common Z3 mechanical issues. We did a fresh oil service, brake fluid flush, and replaced the driver’s side seatbelt tensioner. The water pump, thermostat, accessory belts, and rollers were replaced at 68K miles in 2014. The front struts, power steering lines, VANOS control line, and front brakes were replaced at 62K miles in 2012. The M52 starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There is no VANOS rattle. The cooling system has no leaks or seeps. There are no notable oil leaks or seeps. The clutch take-up is correct and it does not slip. The transmission shifts smoothly; the 5th gear lean only occurs when the gearbox is cold. There are no driveline or wheel-bearing vibrations. The suspension is tight, and the brakes are strong. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado. It will no doubt need further care and maintenance, but other than the air conditioning, nothing needs immediate attention.
