The C5-generation A6 was introduced in 1997 as the second iteration of Audi’s full size executive sedan and the newly re-named A6. By the second generation of the A6 Audi had gone up-market and was making considerable headway against the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. The A6 offered considerable options over its competitors, including a more refined interior than BMW and a sporting alternative to Grandpa’s Mercedes. The Quattro all-wheel system drive edged out Mercedes’ 4Matic system, too. For engines you could have your virtual pick of Audi’s power plants, the best of which was the 2.7-liter bi-turbo from the B5 S4 good for 250 horsepower in stock form. Mated to an optional 6-speed manual transmission, the 2.7T transformed the big Audi into a proper sports sedan—think S4 you could take your girlfriend’s parents to dinner in! The C5 was a sweet spot in the A6 evolution; it was a considerable leap forward from the C4 A6, yet suffered none of the reliability issues successive generations have.
This Pearl White over Black leather 6-speed 2001 Audi A6 is a fantastic example that stands out against a population of C5 A6s that have fallen into disrepair, neglect, and entry level buyers. With just over 206,000 miles, it is proof that with proper care and maintenance C5s can last forever. It was originally leased in December of 2001 to the first owner, who then purchased it and moved to Colorado in January of 2003 when it had 16k miles. It has stayed in Colorado ever since, going to the second owner in 2004 and remaining with them for nearly fourteen years. Last summer they sold it to their adult son, the owner of a specialist repair shop, whom I purchased it from. The only modifications are XS Power coilovers and A8 wheels (the orignal A6 wheels are included). In preparation for sale we had a pre-purchase inspection completed by Audi specialists Autosport Werks and we addressed the following items: front brake lines, positive crank case ventilation lines, coolant flush, expansion tank and hose, right front window regulator, and mirror switch. Prior to that the records and Carfax show regular and frequent services. In 2010 the rear bumper cover was repainted due to damage (as reported on the Carfax) and I suspect that the front bumper cover has also repainted at some point. The driver’s side has been repainted at some point as well. As it sits, this a well cared for example of a C5 A6 with the desirable manual transmission and 2.7T. We would like to find a new owner who will enjoy and care for it in the next chapter of its story.
Overall the Pearl White paint is in excellent condition. It does have some mileage related imperfections, but much less than you would expect of a 206k mile car. The worst are rock chips on the front bumper cover and fenders, and some minor dents and dings commiserate with age. The hood, front and rear bumpers covers and driver’s side have been repainted at some point. There was a minor rear impact that left the rear bumper cover in need of a re-spray, which was performed very well. There is no rust anywhere; this A6 has lived in Colorado since 2003. The windshield is clean and clear with only minor pitting. The side and rear window glass is in excellent shape. The headlight, indicator, marker, and brake light lenses are clear and crack-free. The A8 wheels have no bends, but do have a bit of curb rash on all four. They are wrapped in Yokohama YK520 tires with adequate tread remaining.
The interior is also in very good shape for its age. The black leather in this condition is hard to come by. There are no odors other than that of fine leather, and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean and free of rips or tears. Factory floor mats are included, there is one large wear spot in the driver’s side floor mat. The black leather holds up far better over time than the more common silver interiors. There are no rips, failed stitching, or broken piping. The dashboard is has none of the warping that is common with Audis of this period. There is some minor cracking of the center console wood trim. The armrest functions properly. The instrument cluster LCD has no failed pixels (a common issue) and all gauges and lights work correctly. There is wear on some of the steering wheel buttons. The steering wheel leather is in excellent shape with only minor wear. All buttons and functions work correctly; the power windows, door locks, sunroof, radio, and power seat adjustments work correctly (we replaced the power mirror switch). The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The trunk carpet is clean. The factory jack, warning triangle, and spare tire are present. Two keys are included, as are all factory owners’ manuals and the original window sticker.
All owners of this A6 have been meticulous stewards. The 2.7T pulls hard to redline and the turbos are quiet. The only notable mechanical gripe is weeping cam seals and valve cover gaskets, but these to not warrant replacement yet. The clutch take-up is correct, and the transmission shifts smoothly. The XS Power coilover suspension is sporty, yet compliant and comfortable. The brakes are strong and there are no drive-line vibrations. It passes emission in Colorado, which we have done prior to sale. This is a primarily stock example that can be enjoyed as-is, or taken to the next level.
In preparation for sale we:
Make no mistake, any C5 A6 will need continued care and maintenance, but this is a well cared for example. You can opt for a lower mileage example, however this one proves that proper stewardship matters much more than strictly mileage. We would like to find a buyer who appreciates this and who will enjoy this A6 for years and miles to come.
