The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet it was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can comfortably accommodate four adults while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, a thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been worse.
This 2001 Silverstone over Silverstone and Black leather E39 M5 is 1 of 121 examples in that color combo for the U.S. market. Silverstone was a launch color for the E39 M5 and stands out from the typical Silver and Black hues. The cosmetic condition of this M5 belies its miles, presenting like a car with half the miles. Notable options include Brushed Aluminum trim, a modern Dynavin head unit, Dynamic Sound Processing (DSP), Parking Distance Control (PDC), auto-dimming mirrors, and lots of standard E39 M5 kit. It was originally delivered in December of 2000 to Belview, Washington, under the first owner until it was sold with 69,000 miles in February of 2010 to the second owner in Seattle, Washington. After living all of its life in the Pacific Northwest, the third owner brought it to Boulder, Colorado in 2021 with 122,000 miles. During its time in Washington State, this M5 was maintained at BMW of Bellevue and Seattle BMW receiving timely and scheduled service. Once the car arrived in Colorado it was serviced at Autohaus in Boulder and Autosport Werks in Broomfield, with the most notable recent service being a transmission fluid flush and engine oil service around 124,000 miles. When it landed, we did a full inspection and have documented its condition thoroughly below. In February of 2009, the Carfax reported a low-speed accident to the rear, causing minor damage and airbags did not deploy; all paint and panels appear to be original, with the exception of the trunk lid being repainted. As it sits, this is a fantastic example of an E39 M5 in a unique and rare color and it has been impeccably maintained. We look forward to finding the owner who will tell the next chapter of this story.
The Silverstone paint is in fantastic condition for its age and mileage. The finish presents very well despite its age and mileage. Close inspection reveals typical imperfections in the form of rock chips and some paint chips to the body. The worst are moderate rock chipping and scrapes on the front bumper with a few on the hood and fenders. There is a small dent on the driver’s fender and some small paint peeling on the driver’s door handle. There is a small crease on the lower driver’s door just under the plastic trim strip. There is also a moderate scratch/dent on the lower portion of the passenger side skirt. The majority of the paint is original, gauging at 3-5 mils, except for the rear trunk lid and right rear quarter panel, which gauges at 6-7 mils. The bottom of the front bumper cover has some scraping, though not as severe as other examples. There is no notable rust or corrosion. All VIN stickers and plates are present. All trim and black-work is present and pristine. The headlight lenses have light pitting, but they and the indicator lenses are clear and crack-free. The angel eyes have no missing filaments, and all bulbs work. The windshield has some pitting but is crack-free. The wheels are in excellent shape except for some light paint fading and chips. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires measuring 245/40 18” in front and 275/35 18” in back with 2023 DOT dates. Tread depth is 10/32 in front and 11/32 in back.
The interior is in exceptional condition. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The headliner does not sag, and the sunroof functions correctly. The Technical Graphite trim is in excellent condition. The embossed leather has a great feel and presents well. There is typical wear to the front seat bolsters, with moderate wear and a previous leather repair to the driver’s seat. There is no seat twist, and the seat heaters work. The rear seats are clean.. The door cards are in great shape. The dashboard is clear and crack-free. The steering wheel leather is excellent, and the trim is free of notable flaws. The instrument cluster LCD screen has no failed pixels, and neither does the Nav screen. The cup holders work. All power functions work as they should; the door lock and power windows work. The center console only has light wear to the handbrake, and light scratching around the shifter trim. Climate control blows hot or cold when required. The trunk is clean, the tool kit is complete, and the. The Dynavin modern entertainment touchscreen interface works and all musical and control features work but the navigation CD is missing. Two sets of keys are included, as is the owners’ manual booklet.
Mechanically, this M5 has no outstanding issues. There are no common E39 issues like noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, or inoperative door and window regulators. The S62 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It has no VANOS rattle or excessive lifter noise. There are no excessive fluid leaks or drips, but it is a V8 BMW, so you should be prepared for that. There are no SES lights or engine management codes indicating carbon build-up. The clutch has zero slip, and the take-up is correct. The shifter is tight and crisp. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet, with no vibrations. The brakes are excellent and recently replaced. Like any M5, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs, but the end result is well worth it!
