The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before it was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been incrementally worse.

Summary

This Carbon Black (dark metallic blue) over Black Sport Leather 2002 BMW E39 M5 is a desirable color combination with only 97,400 miles. It has the luxury extended leather interior, and is completely stock except for a Zionsville radiator (a $1300 upgrade) and a ZHP shift knob. It was originally leased to the first owner on August 2, 2002, and from what I can tell, bought by that person on September 5, 2005, with whom it remained with until 2012 and 50k miles. The second owner kept it in California until it came to Vail, Colorado in the spring of last year at 93k miles with a fellow BMW enthusiast. He refreshed the cooling system including the water pump, thermostat, aux fan, aux fan switch, aluminum connector pipes, and associated sensors and gaskets. He also replaced the VANOS oil control lines, power steering lines, accessory belts, oil level sensor, blower motor final stage resistor, trunk strut, and upper windshield gasket. He drove it sparingly, but it didn’t make sense to keep through the winter in the mountains. When we got it, we gave it another round of E39 M5 maintenance to bring it up to our standards. This included a fresh clutch kit, clutch slave cylinder hose, rear main seal, front control arms, center steering link and tie rods, front end alignment, washer reservoir fill tube, brake fluid flush, and a fresh oil change. Cosmetically the M5 is in good condition and the Carfax is clean. Both the front and rear bumper covers had small cracks, which we swapped both with crack-free Carbon Black M5 bumper covers from a parts car. The driver and passenger side doors have been repainted at some point, which is discernible with close scrutiny. I paint gauged the entire car and, with the exception of those doors and blending on the front and rear fenders, all paint is original. The paint gauge report is included in the records. The hood has moderate paint chips. We have a Carbon Black M5 parts car if the buyer wants extra doors and a hood with better paint, which we can negotiate on. I also have an Imola / black M5 sport interior that would really set this car off and could be alternatives to the luxury interior if that isn’t to your liking. As it sits, this a fantastic driver-quality M5. It is mechanically sound and very presentable, but just imperfect enough to use daily without guilt. You can enjoy it the way it is, or refine it to the next level.

The Carbon Black paint is in good condition. It has clearly been a West Coast car and spared harsh winter conditions. Other than moderate paint chips on the hood, the finish is very nice with the only defects being a few door dings, minor chips and scratches, a shallow impression on the driver’s side C pillar, and a small dent near the passenger side kidney grill. All paint and panels are original except for the aforementioned passenger side doors and the paint gauge report is included in the records. Personally, I would replace the hood with the extra hood we have, but I wanted to leave that up to the buyer. The front and rear bumper covers are crack-free thanks to the good ones we replaced them with. All trim and black-work is present with slight UV fade. The headlight and indicator lenses are clear and crack free. The Angel Eyes have no missing filaments and all bulbs work. The fog light lenses are crack-free. The windshield is also free of cracks, but it does have minor pitting. The side and rear windows are tinted, which has helped preserve the interior. The wheels are straight and true, with only minor curb rash. The tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE970 fronts and Toyo Proxes 4Plus rear. Both have around 50% tread remaining.

Interior

The interior is in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The seat leather is fantastic, being soft and supple to the touch. There is no excessive seat bolster wear or failed seams, but there is visible creasing on the driver’s seat. There is no seat twist. The dashboard extended leather is soft and there are no cracks or failed stitching. The steering wheel has no excessive wear. The instrument cluster, navigation screen and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. The BMW Premium sound is fantastic. There are no check codes on the onboard computer and none of the check engine, DSC, or ABS warning lights are on. Astonishingly, the cup holders do work, but E39 cup holders are terrible, so use them at your own risk. All power functions, seat motors, and seat heaters function like they should. The door lock and window regulators work. The driver’s door upper edge stripping is missing about 3 inches in the upper right corner, but the seal is intact, so there is no wind noise. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds. The headlight cleaning system does not work due to a leaky reservoir tank, but it was a pretty useless system to begin with. There are a few discolored spots on the trunk floor panel and the tool kit is present along with the DVD / TV module.

Records from the previous owner and an invoice for our work are included with the sale. Prior to that the Carfax shows regular registrations and inspections. There are no common E39 issues like leaking valve cover gaskets, noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, leaking differential output shaft seals, or inoperative door and window regulators. The S62 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It has no VANOS rattle or lifter noise. There are no fluid leaks or drips. There are no SES lights or engine management codes indicating carbon build up (a redline a day keeps the carbon away). The clutch has zero slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The brakes are excellent. Like any M5, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs (I tell people $2k every 10k miles on average). As it sits, this is a turn-key M5 ready for its next chapter.
