If you are unfamiliar with the BMW E46 Performance Package, or ZHP, here is the original BMW North American press release:

The 330i Performance Package has been created exclusively for the U.S. market for enthusiasts by enthusiasts at BMW Individual, a division of BMW M GmbH. There is no aspect of the driving experience that has not been enhanced by the Performance Package. Modifications to the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, which include different camshafts and performance-modified Digital Motor Electronics, yield a ten horsepower increase to 235. For the first time in a 330i a six-speed manual transmission will be standard. With the Performance Package it will include a short-throw shifter. The package also includes a shorter final drive ratio. The benefits of these modifications are immediately apparent - the 330i with a Performance Package will accelerate from 0 - 60 miles-per-hour in 6 seconds, about half a second faster than a standard 330i. To match the straight-line performance a new sports suspension, more aggressively tuned than the 330i’s standard sport suspension, is mated to 18-inch wheels with mixed-size performance tires. In addition to the wheels and tires the exterior of the 330i Performance Package is distinguished by its Aerodynamic Package, black headlight trim, high gloss shadowline trim and a new exhaust that not only appears but also sounds more aggressive. The look and feel of the interior has been refined with cloth and Alcantara sport seats matching the Alcantara sport steering wheel. An anthracite headliner and Black cube aluminum trim complete an ambiance tailored to the enthusiast. Silver cube aluminum trim is optional. The instrumentation includes red needles while the tachometer reflects the modified engine’s 300 higher rpm limit. Production of the 330i Performance Package will begin in March 2003 with the first cars arriving at BMW centers in April.

The ZHP is the most evolved and developed four-door E46, and a more practical alternative to the two-door only E46 M3, that said from someone who has plenty of seat time behind the wheel of both. There are few better buys in the E46 market than a ZHP.

Summary

 exterior photo

This Silver Grey Metallic over Black leather 2003 ZHP sedan is an excellent driver-quality example. It is nicely optioned with the black leather seats and refreshed leather M-stitched steering wheel in lieu of the alcantara, which was prone to premature wear. Other options were kept to a minimum, including Harmon Kardon premium sound and Xenon headlights. The first year of the ZHP was 2003, and they were only offered in four-door form (sedan lovers rejoice!) and only with a 6-speed manual transmission. Silver Grey was a new-for-2003-color replacing Steel Grey Metallic; it was one of the best E46 exterior colors. This ZHP was originally delivered in July of 2003 in Texas as a lease then remained there with the second owner from 2006 to 2015. The Carfax shows it being regularly dealer serviced at Advantage Midtown BMW and Houston BMW. It came to Colorado in 2015 with the third owner, who we purchased it from. The records date back to 2015 and show the radiator, expansion tank, hoses, both front shocks, mounts, the left and right control arms, power steering rack boots, power steering lines, oil stand gasket, VANOS oil line, intake cam position sensor, and left engine mount being done. In preparation for sale we finished the list by replacing the battery, shift shaft seal and flex disc, swaybar end links, headlight level arm, thermostat, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, VANOS solenoid, a brake fluid flush, and a missing fender lining and brake duct. The exterior and interior are in good condition, but bear the imperfections of regular use (described in-depth below). We also replaced the windshield glass and the ZHP shift knob. The Carfax is clean, but there is evidence of paintwork described in the exterior paragraph. As it sits, this is a mechanically sound E46 330i ZHP that is presentable, but imperfect enough to use and enjoy.

Overall, the Silver Grey paint is in good condition, but it does reveal flaws typical of it its age and mileage. There are numerous small dings and rock chips on the leading edges, along with some blemishes in the paint. The right rear fender wheel well shows evidence of damage and the quarter panel has been repainted along with the rear bumper cover. The paintwork is tolerable, but certainly not perfect—it does suit the driver mission of this ZHP. There is no notable rust, thanks to living in Texas and Colorado. All trim is in place with the exception of the tow hook covers, but there is UV fade and dry rot in areas. We replaced the windshield, which is crack and pitting-free. The side and rear windows are lightly tinted. The headlights lenses are slightly foggy, and all indicator, marker, and brake lights work. The ZHP Style 135 wheels have some curb rash, but they are presentable. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires are worn evenly with over 60% tread remaining and 2016 DOT dates.

Interior

Overall the interior is also in good shape. The black leather has held up much better than alcantara would have. There are no odors. The black cube trim is present and in good shape with the exception of the driver’s door piece which has some broken clips. The leather steering wheel has been recovered at some point and is in very good condition with M colored stitching. We also replaced the ZHP shift knob with an OEM BMW one. The seats have light bolster wear, but they are presentable. The armrest has moderate wear. The headliner does not sag. The A-Pillar covers have slight wrinkles, but are much better than most E46’s. The instrument cluster shows no warning or check lights. There are no blown out pixels in the instrument cluster, radio screen, or HVAC. The heat blows hot and the air conditioning blows cold; the compressor does make some noise. One of the vent adjustor tabs is broken. The Harmon Kardon BMW Business premium sound system is fantastic. The right front window switch is loose, but it functions. The right rear window regulator is INOP. The trunk carpet is moderately soiled. The spare tire, factory jack, and tool kit are complete. The owners’ manual and one key are included.

Mechanical

 engine photo

Between the previous owner and us all routine E46 / M54 maintenance has been brought up to date. The engine idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak or spot. The valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket have been replaced. It does not have excessive oil consumption. The shifter is tight and the clutch take up is correct. There are no driveline, wheel bearing, or suspension noise or vibrations. The sport suspension is firm and compliant, with many components being recently replaced. The brakes are strong with lots of life left. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions. This ZHP is presentable, but also imperfect enough to use and enjoy without guilt. We resisted the temptation to make it perfect in order price it a larger market. It makes a great entry-level segment into the performance BMW market.
