In the mid-2000s Porsche filled the gap between the newly released 987 Boxster and 997 911 Carrera with the mid-engine 987 Cayman S. In reality, the Cayman S was no gap-filler—it was a niche carver! This was thanks to the Cayman S’s own unique 295-horsepower version of the 3.4-liter M97 engine with VarioCam Plus variable valve timing pulled from the Carrera (which would also later find its way into the Boxster S). Its fixed roof made it two times more rigid than the Boxster, and mounting that M97 engine amidships gave it none of the 911’s bad manners. Rumor had it, that thanks to those manners, the Cayman S was faster around the Nurburgring than the base 911 Carrera. Other exclusive bits of kit included a silver-trimmed front spoiler and optional 19-inch wheels, carbon ceramic brakes, bi-xenon headlights, active suspension management, and the Sport Chrono package. By the M97 engine in the 2006 to 2008 model years, the dreaded intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) failure had been significantly reduced due to a larger dual row IMS. A decade and a half later the 987 Cayman S has cemented its niche as one of the most potent cars for the money in the Porsche catalog, a legacy that has continued through two successive generations of Caymans.

This 2006 Basalt Black Metallic over Black Sport leather Cayman S came to us from a good friend and local Porsche Club of America (PCA) member. It was originally delivered through Joseph Northland Porsche in Cincinnati, Ohio as a Cayman S launch car (according to the VIN decode, option 762). It was sold to its the first owner in Walnut Creek, California a year later with only 75 miles on the odometer. It remained in California, being serviced at Michael Stead Porsche until moving to Texas in 2011 at 39,000 miles where Porsche of Plano took up the service mantle. In 2014, it went to Nebraska for a few years before coming to Colorado in 2017, being offered by Porsche of Colorado Springs after receiving a thorough pre-purchase inspection. It has had more than a few owners, but it has clearly been well cared for and properly maintained. It is 100% stock except for a Remus Sport cat-back exhaust—one of the best sounding exhaust notes of all time! The stock exhaust is also included. Factory options include heated leather sport seats, the Bi-Xenon headlights package, Bose Surround sound system, 19-inch Carrera Classic Wheels w/ Colored Crests, Porsche carpet floor mats, and tire pressure monitoring. In preparation for sale we gave it our own inspection, replaced the battery and gave it a fresh oil change, including a Blackstone Labs oil analysis sample. It is wearing freshly mounted Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position tires. The M97 engine has a low incidence of IMS failure, which can be further mitigated along with other issues by keeping the revs above 2-3,000 RPMs and vigorous pulls to redline once the oil is warmed up—in other words, drive it like a Porsche! The Carfax is clean, and it shows regular usage, which is also healthy for IMS longevity. All owners’ manuals are included, along with one key FOB, and we pay for and ensure it passes emissions in Colorado. We would like to find a new owner who will care for and appreciate this Cayman S for the next chapter. I will include one year of PCA membership with the purchase if you aren’t already a member and performance-driving instruction is also available if desired. There are few better driving experiences than a 987 Cayman S, it is refined yet visceral, and simply enjoyable—a platform that is happy to please its pilot with little drama or complaint.

Exterior

The Basalt Black Metallic paint is in excellent condition. It has clearly been stored indoors and used in fair weather. The finish is brilliant with only a few minor defects in the form of small scratches and light rock chips on the front bumper cover and fenders. The factory rear fender protectant film is intact and presentable. All paint and panels are original except for the front and rear bumper covers, and the Carfax shows no accidents. The headlight, indicator and taillight lenses are clear and crack free. The windshield glass is crack-free with only minor putting, and the side and rear glass is in great shape. The 19-inch Carerra Classic wheels are in excellent shape with one small chip on the left front wheel and one small spot of curb rash (approximately 2”) on the left rear wheel. The Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions have 2018 DOT dates and 90% tread remaining.

Interior

The interior is also in excellent shape. There are no odors. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by Porsche floor mats. The driver’s side floor mat has typical wear. The driver’s door-sill has some moderate scratching from entry and egress, and the driver’s door handle has a small area of chipped finish. The seat leather is soft and there is no excessive bolster-wear, only light creasing. The dashboard has no notable defects. The steering wheel leather is fantastic. The instrument cluster, HVAC, and stereo displays have no failed pixels. The Bose sound system sounds amazing. There are no warning lights and the oil level shows full. All power functions, door locks, window switches, seat motors, and seat heaters function properly. The power frunk and rear hatch switches operate correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The rear cargo net and cover are present. The frunk tool kit and owners’ manuals are present, along with one key FOB.

Mechanical

 engine photo

The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There are no fluid leaks or drips, nor any oil or coolant smells. The shifter is crisp and the clutch take-up is correct and indicative of a healthy clutch disc. The transaxle and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The suspension is firm, yet compliant and the brakes are comically good with plenty of life left. The 987 is a reliable and robust platform that you can use and enjoy. It will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but this example deserves it. I recommend 5,000-mile oil change intervals, with continued Blackstone Analysis to monitor engine health, which is standard operating procedure for any Porsche of this period. As it sits, I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across country. We would like to find a buyer who will continue to care for it and appreciate it for years to come.
