The E92 generation M3 (2008-2013 model years, the 2 designates a 2-door) marks the end of an era for the BMW M3. It was the last M3 that followed the high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated, individual throttle body recipe that started with the iconic E30 M3. If you are an M car fanatic of the old school, this is a big deal in the turbo-charged world of the present. The E92 M3 is the most highly evolved and potent example of that old-school recipe. Put another way; the E92 M3 is a fire-breathing monster that shrieks to a redline North of 8,000 rpm while inhaling through no less than eight snarling throttle bodies and wailing through an exhaust unimpeded by turbochargers. It is the M3 with the volume turned up to eleven. And, because it’s an M3, it still offers wonderful daily drivability, comfort, luxury, and practicality. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Edmunds called the E92 M3 the finest, single best, and most complete car on the market. Even the sanctimonious Jeremy Clarkson said it was the best car and there is no point in thinking otherwise.

Summary

 exterior photo

This 2012 E92 M3 Competition Coupe with only 46,600 miles is an extreme outlier example. Finished in the stunning color combo of Jet Black over two-tone Fox Red and Black Novillo leather, it is a highly focused and potent example of an E92 M3 with everything you need and nothing that you don’t. It was ordered to an enthusiast’s spec with the Competition Package (ZCP), carbon fiber roof, M Dynamic Mode w/ M Drive, Adaptive xenon headlights, fold-down rear seats, and a proper six-speed manual gearbox. What makes it even better is what it doesn’t have: no iDrive (a single hump in E92 speak) and manual seats (less weight and less to break) with power-adjustable side bolsters. Finding an E92 M3 with this spec: ZCP, single hump, 6-Speed manual, and manual seats is incredibly rare, which is only made better by the color combo and low mileage.

It was originally delivered in Sugarland, Texas (possibly by Momentum BMW) and remained there under the first owner for five years and 26,000 miles. That was followed by stints in South Carolina (Greenville/Spartanburg, home of BMW’s North American plant) and Georgia under the next two owners before landing in Southern New Jersey with the fourth owner at 42,000 miles. It came to us from a good friend who we have traded E9X M3s with, including a single hump 6-speed sedan and a Limerock Edition. In preparation for sale, his shop replaced the rod bearings (preventatively) with VAC Motorsport coated bearings with ARP bolts. The old rod bearings are included with the sale. The service included the oil pan gasket, engine and transmission mounts, an oil service, fresh front tires, and a four-wheel alignment. As it sits, this is an exceptionally rare and perfectly spec’d E92 M3 Competition. It also received a 2-stage paint correction bringing the Jet Black up to a glossy liquid appearance. In preparation for sale, we replaced the start button and the front felt fender liners (pictures were taken previous to this being done), along with the left cup holder. The Carfax is clean, it shows no evidence of being in any accidents. We have an outline of BMW services dating since original delivery and there are invoices for the recent preventative maintenance. We would like to find a new owner who will write the next chapter of its story.

Exterior

Jet Black’s nocturnal appearance gives this M3’s aggressive cut lines and power bulge a formidable impression. The paint is very nice and indicative of this M3’s low mileage, and we scrutinized this one much closer than a typical example because of the rarity and price point. All paint is original, gauging at between 4 and 5 mils. Close inspection does reveal minor flaws and imperfections in the form of small chips and scratches, but nothing typical of a Colorado car. The hood has very faint imperfections in the clear coat, which are tiny little spots visible in just the right light. There are several scratches at the passenger side C pillar and a deeper thin two-inch scratch on the right quarter panel. There is also slight scratching on the lower front bumper cover. The VIN sticker is in place, as are all warning stickers, and there is no rust (lift shots are available on our website if you are reading this elsewhere). All trim is present and accounted for, and the windshield and rear window rubber moldings have been replaced. The fitment of the front windshield rubber is slightly off, but it is not an issue. The windshield is crack-free and has only minor pitting; the side and rear window glass are tinted and in great shape. The headlight lenses are clear and crack-free; the side, marker, and taillights are also very presentable, but there is light scratching and some typical UV fade on the reverse lights. The ZCP wheels are straight and true, with only minor imperfections and no notable curb rash. They are wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires with lots of tread remaining. The front tires were replaced in March of this year, the rear tires have 2018 DOT dates.

Interior

The interior of this M3 is as stunning as the exterior, with two-tone Fox Red over Black leather being a defining element of the cockpit. The lack of iDrive gives it a classic M3 feel that is in no need of infotainment. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of tears and stains and is protected by aftermarket floor mats. The headliner doesn’t sag, and the pillar trims are free of wrinkles. The door sill on the driver’s side has light scuffing. The seats are in excellent condition, with only light bolster wear on the seat bottom bolster. The rear seats are immaculate and are the desirable fold-down type. The steering wheel, dashboard, instrument cluster, steering column switches, and center console buttons are in near perfect condition. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster and no check lights, warning lights, or check control alerts. The BMW Individual stereo sounds fantastic. The A/C blows cold and the heat blows warm. The shift knob shows light wear on the shift pattern bezel. The seat belt extenders work correctly. The cup holders also work; we replaced the left one. Two key FOBs are included, along with the owners’ manual leather booklet.

Mechanical

 engine photo

All maintenance is up to date and there are no common E9X/S65 issues. There are invoices for the rod bearings and recent maintenance, plus an outline of BMW services dating since original. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS units are quiet, the throttle body actuators function correctly, and the rod bearings have been preventatively replaced. The clutch take-up is correct and it does not slip, and the transmission shifts smoothly. The suspension is firm and compliant, and the EDC functions correctly. The brakes have lots of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado.
