The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was the last of the traditional G-Body 911s—and one of the best. By the Carrera 3.2, Porsche had perfected the traditional 911 recipe with more power and reliability than its predecessors, yet it still retained the elements that make a classic 911 so addicting to drive. The 3.2-liter engine had significantly revised internals, a more modern fuel injection system, as well as updated intake and exhaust systems over its predecessors. These improvements produced slightly over 200 horsepower in U.S. market cars, which, thanks to a paltry 2866-pound weight, gave it 6 second 0-60 time in the real world. The later years of the 3.2 also featured the G50 gearbox, a vast improvement over the often difficult to shift 915 gearbox. The G50 was so good that it stayed in the 911 through the remainder of the air-cooled era, the 993. Porsche perfected the no-compromise open top recipe with the Targa offering a removable top experience with considerably more rigidity than a cabriolet. As technology and refinement have marched forward, the 3.2’s raw and organic driving experience has improved like a fine wine. A 3.2 Carrera with the G50 gearbox is the pinnacle of the G-Body 911 and one of the best iterations ever produced.
This 1987 911 3.2 Carrera Targa finished in Guards Red over Black partial leather is a stunning example of a G50 G-body 911. With only 55,700 miles it is a collector-grade example in outstanding condition. Optioned in one of the best color combinations: Guards Red over black, and with the front spoiler and rear 3.2 Carrera tail (both likely added by the delivering dealer), it oozes of 1980’s air-cooled coolness. Factory options consist of automatic speed control (cruise control), air conditioning, Porsche floor mats, and 16-inch Fuchs wheels. A modern Alpine stereo system is only aftermarket addition. The G50 gearbox transforms the 1987-1989 3.2 Carrera Targa into a wonderfully driving 911 without sacrificing the pure and undiluted qualities that make the G-body 911s so good!
This 911 was originally delivered by in New York City in February of 1987 followed by stints in Minnesota and Tennessee before landing with a classic car collector in Iowa. It came to us on consignment from that collector, who we are selling it on consignment for. There are detailed service records documenting the mileage dating back to the mid-1990s and 19K miles. The work shows frequent and regular services at Porsche specialists from that point on. Significant items prior to our tenure include brake calipers, oil lines, sway bar mounts, an R134a air conditioning retrofit, fuel pump, ignition relay, and clutch kit with crank seal. A pre-purchase inspection in 2015 showed compression numbers in the 180-190 psi range and leak down of 5-10%, with 20% in the number 4 cylinder. This was done a 54.7K miles. The records show less than 3,000 miles of operation in the previous 4 years, and we suspect the low number was due to the position of the valves in of that cylinder during the time it was parked.
Suspecting this, when we brought it to Colorado we ran initial leak down and compression numbers, which showed 120-130 psi (145-160 psi corrected for Colorado air density) and 5% leak down in cylinders 1-4, 37% in cylinder 5 and 11% in cylinder 6. It was driven only 500 miles in the six years prior to this test. Suspecting this was also due to open valve position when it was parked, we changed the oil, filled up the fuel with Shell V-tech premium and a can of BG 44K fuel treatment and then drove it vigorously for 400 miles (once the oil was warmed up of course). The subsequent compression numbers showed 120-130 psi compression and leak down numbers of 4-6% in cylinders 1-5 and 11% in cylinder number 6, the latter being consistent with all previous leak down tests. We also performed a 60K service including another oil and filter change, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid flush, valve adjustment, valve cover gaskets, distributor cab and rotor, alternator belt, and the air filter. Other items we addressed were all four CV axle boots, fog light lenses, a leaking timing chain oil supply line, and the muffler strap. Cosmetically we had the paint professionally corrected and ceramic coated by Simply Clean Detail Studio. Their paint gauge report showed that the entire vehicle has been repainted at some point, gauging at between 150 and 250 microns. The report, detailing the paint condition and flaws is included in the records binder.
As it sits, this an outstanding example of a low-mileage collector-grade G50 G-body 911 Carrera Targa. It is a top of the market example that will make a great first air-cooled 911 or addition to a collection. We are proud to have it at the hangar and look forward to the smiles it will bring to its new owner.
The Guards Red paint is in excellent condition with no glaring defects. We had it paint corrected for swirl marks and ceramic coated by Dynamic Imports in preparation for sale. The entire vehicle has been repainted, with paint thickness reading of 150 and 250 microns. The report, detailing the paint condition and flaws is included in the records binder. Paint imperfections consist of light rock chips on the mirror covers, lower front valance, front bumper, and a few on the hood that were previously touched up. All VIN tags are in place and the hood sticker is present on the hood. All trim and black-work are present and in good condition. The lower front splitter has some minor abrasion and slight waviness in the upper front bumper trim gasket. The 3.2 Carrera tail rubber is perfect. The windshield has no cracks, but it does have light pitting. The side and rear window glass are excellent and appear to be original. The Targa roll hoop paint is in good condition and the Targa top is in excellent shape with good seals. The headlight lenses are in great shape, the fog light lenses are recently replaced, and the brake lights and indicator lenses are clear and crack-free. The 16-inch Fuchs wheels are excellent, although someone infuriatingly mounted the wheel weights on the outside of the lips (we will correct this). Other than that, they have no curb rash or notable paint defects. They are wearing Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport tires with good tread remaining and 2015 DOT dates.
The inside is likewise in excellent condition. The carpet has no tears or notable stains and is protected by Porsche floor mats. There are no odors other than that lovely 911 smell and it has never been smoked in. The dashboard is crack-free and unblemished. The seat leather is soft, with no tears, blown out stitching, or broken piping. There is, however, some creasing on the outboard seat bolsters. All power seat functions work. The rear seat fold-down backrests are present and in good shape, they form a shelf when folded flat. All gauges function correctly, the odometer works, and there are no burnt out bulbs or warning lights. The steering wheel is excellent shape. The gearshift knob has slight wear on the leather at the top of the knob. Underneath it, the shift boot has no excessive wear. The modern Alpine stereo has Bluetooth and sounds great through updated speakers. The blower fan works, the heat blows warm, and the air conditioning blows luke-cold. It has been converted to R134a and holds a charge for a season, but it is an air-cooled 911 so it takes the edge off at best. The non-power locks and power windows work as they should as do the windshield wipers. The door cards are not separating and are in excellent shape. One key and the owners’ manual are included in the sale, along with the records binder, paint gauge report, receipts dating from mid-1990s up to the present.
This 911 has always benefited from excellent stewardship, regular maintenance and oil changes. Its mileage is documented in the service records. In preparation for sale, we completed the work outlined in the summary paragraph. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It revs smoothly throughout the rev range and pulls strongly to redline. The compression and leak-down numbers are healthy as described in detail above. It has no notable oil leaks, all having been addressed in our recent service. The G50 gearbox shifting is crisp and smooth—a dramatic improvement over the 915 transaxle of earlier 3.2 Carreras. The clutch take-up is correct and does not slip. The suspension is firm but compliant, and it corners wonderfully. The brakes are firm with plenty of life left. There are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations. Most importantly, driving this car (which we had the pleasure of doing so in preparation for our maintenance), its low-mileage is clearly evident. Everything is tight and quiet and indicative of the reality that they are low-mileage once! We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. Overall, this is an outstanding example of the one of the best G-body 911s ever made.
