The 1984-1991 BMW 3 Series, known generationally as the E30, is the one model more than any other that earned BMW its Ultimate Driving Machine reputation. E30s are one of our specialty vehicles at Glen Shelly Auto Brokers. I have restored, rebuilt, and sorted a dozen E30’s over the years and currently own an iX and a Touring. Post lifecycle update E30s started in 1988, which consisted of modernized plastic bumpers, the M20B25 “i” engine, and other minor changes. The i motor had a higher redline and produced more power than the efficiency focused M20B27 “e” motor that preceded it. 325iS models featured an aggressive front valence, rear deck lid spoiler, sport seats, an M Tech 1 steering wheel, 13-button onboard computer, and a limited slip differential. The end result was a significant improvement over the base model 325 and arguably one of the best driver-focused E30s produced.
This 1990 325iS has been in my circle of E30 enthusiast friends for many years. It came to Colorado via Arizona and Texas and was built it into its current form, which is a mild track / autocross build that is still street legal and daily drivable. The odometer reads 118K miles, but based on the previous owners’ records, the actual mileage is likely closer to the 150K range. Regardless, this is one of the strongest pulling E30’s I’ve driven. Power upgrades include a Bimmerheads 274 Cam, Miller MAF conversion, Miller WAR chip, MAC Autosport tune, headers, and a custom exhaust producing 161 wheel horsepower and 159 foot-pounds—impressive numbers for an E30 in Colorado’s mile-high atmosphere. A redline pull is properly fast and sounds F’ing glorious! Power reaches the road through H&R Race springs, camber plates, and Bilstein Sport shocks. The interior features premium sound, a 13-button OBC, map light mirror, M Tech 1 steering wheel, Recaro seats, and a Condor weighted shift knob. The exterior highlights are Euro “Smiley” projector with working city lights, smoked indicators, a Ryan G splitter, and very nice 15-inch Ronal wheels wearing fresh Dunlop Direzza DZII tires. Recent maintenance includes a tune, O2 sensor, odometer gear rebuild, oil pan gasket, cam seal, valve cover gasket, intake manifold gaskets, front swaybar end links, steering joint, power steering pump and lines, and the timing belt. The result is a sorted E30 that will make its new owner a hero on the track or autocross while looking great and turning heads on every drive. Performance driving and coaching are available.
