At Glen Shelly Auto Brokers we are Toyota 4Runner fanatics. The 2nd Gen Toyota 4Runner (T4R) was a significant leap forward from the 1st Gen, being the first “hard shell” T4R. The 2nd Gen also offered more modern amenities, and while the 3.0-liter V6 is certainly not fast, it does have more torque than the iconic 4-cylinder 22R engine. While not as reliable as the 22R, the 3.0-liter V6 is a stout power plant, although they all will eventually need head gaskets—so plan accordingly. Yet because the 2nd Gen heralded from the early 90’s era it was refreshingly simple, having none of the climate control module or electronic gremlins that 3rd Gen T4Rs suffered from. The 2nd Gen was also the last T4R with a proper tailgate, which is fantastic for camping, concerts, and games!
This 1994 V6 4x4 4Runner has been one of our personal vehicles since 2013. My former business partner purchased it from the original owner’s family in October of 2013 with only 84,000 miles. It was originally sold in September of 1994 and remained with the original owner for the next nineteen years. They reportedly were snowbirds that went to Florida in the winter, resulting in the low mileage and what is clearly minimal winter exposure. The Carfax supports this, as well, with all of the entries being during temperate months with the exception of two entries over the holidays in 2005. The original owner reportedly passed it on to a family member in September 2013, who we purchased it from one month later. In the last five years it has been treated to regular maintenance including: frequent and regular oil changes, transmission and differential fluid changes, coolant and brake fluid flushes, differential seals, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, front brakes (pads, rotors, and calipers), tie rod ends, a front-end alignment, a power steering line and pump seals, accessory belts, battery, and the exhaust (headers, cats, and muffler). It also underwent cosmetic restoration with a driver’s seat cloth repair, a replacement dashboard, a small rust repair to the left rear lower quarter panel underneath the bumper, a replacement windshield, and Moog 225 rear springs with 1.5-inch spacers (to cure the 4Runner sag). As it sits, it is ready for the next chapter of Colorado adventures. It comes with two keys, the owners’ manuals, and a clean Carfax. It bears a few imperfections commensurate with age (detailed below), but it stands out as an exceptional outlier against a population of old-school Toyota 4Runners that have been beaten, abused, enjoyed, and literally had the wheels driven off them in some cases!
Overall the paint is in very good condition, as expected with a lower mileage 4Runner. The hood has minor paint chips along the leading edge and a few touch up areas where a factory wind deflector was installed. There are other light chips and scratches on the body, but overall it is very good. We had a small rust repair done to the left rear quarter panel a few years ago. The undercarriage and body panels are free of any significant rust and all VIN tags are in place. The chrome front bumper is in good shape, the rear has minor surface rust in spots. All trim work is present, including the factory roof rack. The headlight lenses are clear and crack-free, as are the indicator, side-marker, and brake light lenses. There is some minor UV fade on the taillights. The windshield has minor pitting, but no cracks. The side and rear window glass is in great shape. The retractable antenna works correctly. The wheels have no bends or significant curb rash, but they do have some pitting. They are fitted with BF Goodrich T/A KO2 Tires with over 50% tread remaining.
Overall the blue cloth interior is in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean and protected by factory floor mats. The headliner has some minor staining, but no sag. The front seats are excellent, with no tears or stains; the driver’s seat has been repaired under our ownership. The back seats are in very good condition. The steering wheel has some wear, but it is presentable. The dashboard is crack-free and all wooden trim is in place. The cup holder, factory stereo, and HVAC panel function correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The center console and shift knob have minor wear. All interior lights, gauges, buttons, switches, and accessories work, including the power rear window. The rear trunk has a rubber Weather Tech floor mat. The factory owner’s manual, factory jack, and two keys are included with the sale.
The 3VZ-E V6 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls as strong as a 3VZ-E does. There are no codes or warning lights. It does not leak or spot, and does not consume oil or coolant—the latter a sign of imminent head gasket failure. The clutch take up is correct. The gearbox shifts smoothly and the driveline is quiet and vibration free. All mechanical functions work correctly, the 4-wheel drive engages smoothly in all ranges. The suspension is firm, yet compliant, and there is no “4Runner shimmy” at high speeds (a common issue). The brakes are strong and have plenty of life in them left thanks to recent replacement. The catalytic converters and exhaust have been replaced and we pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado.
