Background

1995 BMW (E36) M3 Coupe exterior photo

The BMW E36 (1992 to 1999 3 Series) M3 occurred at a sweet spot of BMW evolution where power, weight, size, suspension design, reliability, and luxury all intersected. It was revolutionary when it debuted in the spring of 1991 for the 1992 model year. It was the first BMW designed by computer-aided design and a stark contrast to the traditional 3-box design language used in the E21 and E30 generation 3 series. The driving experience is connected and visceral, yet the driver enjoys luxuries that took other marquees years to offer. With only the slightest amount of talent, it is a highly capable platform that can easily outperform much more powerful and expensive vehicles. The ease at which it can be pushed to the limit makes it the weapon of choice in many track applications. Abuse, neglect, and entry-level buyers have decimated the population of worthy examples. Clean, unmolested stock examples command significant premiums—if you can find one!

Summary

 exterior photo

This 1995 BMW E36 M3 is a true survivor example, with only 69,700 miles on the odometer. Finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over Dove Grey leather, it is understated but a quintessential E36 color combination. This M3 makes its statement with what lies beneath the sheet metal with a Dinan Stage 1 suspension, Dinan sway bars, Dinan cold air intake, and a Dinan front strut brace. Dinan upgrades are a sum greater than their parts that improve the E36 M3 without compromising the DNA that M GmbH intended. Other notable options are manual Vader seats, an 18-button on-board computer, stainless steel brake lines, a clutch delay valve delete, a Motion Motorsports undertray, a Bear Motorsports short shift kit, and 17-inch DS1 Motorsport wheels. It was originally delivered by Gebhardt BMW in September of 1995 and has remained in Colorado ever since. Over the next thirteen years, it had three owners before landing with a good friend, BMW CCA member, and instructor in 2008 at 58K miles. In the roughly 10K miles and decade and a half that followed, he used the car sparingly for BMW club events while maintaining it the old-school way per the lifetime maintenance schedule. Notable maintenance included a preventative cooling system overhaul with an aluminum radiator, Stoptech stainless steel brake lines, OEM Sachs clutch, Redline gearbox and differential fluids, tie rods, rear trailing arm bushings, a windshield, driver’s door card mount, and a driver’s window regulator. In preparation for sale, we did a valve cover gasket, power steering lines, accessory belts, hood struts, and brake rotors, pads, and sensors on each corner. Cosmetically, we replaced the grilles and lower front spoiler. The Carfax is clean, but portions of the car have been repainted at some point prior to the current owners’ tenure. We do not know why, but all of the VIN tags are in place, and the paint is high quality and a perfect match. The E36 M3 is one of the most iconic BMWs ever made, and this example is no exception. We’d like to find a new owner who will appreciate this icon and enjoy it for the next chapter of its story.

This Arctic Silver Metallic E36 M3 presents very nicely, but close scrutiny reveals some typical flaws with a nearly 30-year-old car. The majority of the car was repainted in the original Arctic Silver at some point before the current owners’ tenure. The paint quality is high, and the paint match is perfect. The paint gauges from 3 mils on the original panels up to 6-10 mils on the painted areas. There are several small, thicker areas elsewhere. Imperfections consist of a shallow dent on the driver-side door. There is pitting to the front of both fenders, a long but shallow scratch leading from behind the front passenger wheel well to the middle of the passenger door, and a small bump on the passenger door. The rear bumper is in great shape, and the front bumper has some typical pitting and scuffing. There is no notable corrosion or rust. All VIN and factory stickers are present and legible. There are no panel gap inconsistencies. All glass is clean and clear. All trim is in great condition. The mirror glass does not have de-lamination. The headlights are not yellowed but do have some pitting. The taillights and indicators are in great condition, but the driver-side brake light is inoperable. All four 17-inch wheels are in fantastic shape. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires with 10/32” tread depth in front and 11/32” in back. They measure 225/45 front and rear with 2022 DOT dates.

Interior

The interior is also in great shape, with only a few age-related flaws. There are no stains or foul odors, and it has never been smoked in. The headliner is in good condition, with only a few areas just starting to sag. The door cards are in great shape; the driver’s door card mounts have been rebuilt and reinforced. The steering wheel has minimal wear. The rest of the steering column is also functional and in great shape. The dashboard is crack-free, and the instrument cluster is fully functional. The “Darth Vader” vent is not broken or sagging. The glovebox also has virtually no sag. All interior lights and switches are functional and undamaged. All power windows/locks function normally, and all switches are unfaded. Climate control blows hot or cold when required. The stereo functions and sounds great, except for a blown-out rear speaker that only makes itself known with the volume turned up. The center console has very light wear. The driver seat has moderate bolster wear in the typical spots, with the passenger seat having less severe wear. The rear seats are in near-perfect condition. The trunk is unstained, has no odors, and the toolkit is mostly complete.

Mechanical

 engine photo

No common E36/S50 maintenance is up to date and no common issues are current. The list of maintenance outlined in the summary paragraph has been completed in the last 10K miles. The S52B32 engine idles smoothly, pulls strong, and has no Vanos rattle or lifter knock. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The cooling system has been preventatively overhauled. The clutch and shifter are factory-crisp. The gearbox seals are dry, and the shift pins are not sticky, i.e., no 5th gear shifter lean. The brakes are fresh and firm, and the Dinan suspension is compliant. There is no driveline, wheel-bearing vibration, or whine; the CSB and U-joints are in good shape. All suspension bushings and the rear subframe and trailing arm mounts are solid. The exhaust has no leaks or rattles. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions. It will need and deserves the preventative care and maintenance that all BMWs do, but the E36 is a robust platform that will last forever if maintained correctly.
