The 993 chassis (1995 to 1998 911s in the US market) was the pinnacle of air-cooled Porsche evolution. It all started some thirty-five years earlier with the introduction of the one model that came to define Ferdinand Porsche’s vision of a 6-cylinder, rear-engine, sports car with a simple and elegant design. The 911 was as equally at home on the drive to work as it was in the victory circles of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its air-cooled rear-engine recipe was so good that it remained essentially unchanged for the first twenty-five years. Then, in 1989 with the 964, it underwent a revolutionary development that was massive by Porsche standards. Just as the dust had settled from the 964, the 993 made another earth-shattering leap forward with a yet-again completely revised engine, suspension, and a modernized appearance. Despite its technological advancements, the 993 did not forsake its iconic design language, Porsche’s impeccable craftsmanship, or the 911’s air-cooled DNA—which could not be said of its successor, the 996. The 993 marked the greatest and final chapter of the air-cooled Porsche 911. When viewed through the lens of the present, it has only become more significant as the inevitable march of time and technology has proven how utterly excellent the 993 was.
This Polar Silver Metallic over Classic Grey Partial leather 1996 Carrera is a very nice driver-quality example of a 993 911. With 106,500 miles, it lies in a sweet spot in the 993 market as an example that presents exceptionally well for its age and mileage, but is imperfect enough to use and enjoy. It also offers an opportunity for entry into the 993 segment that is beyond the reach of some enthusiasts. Notable options include the Techinc Package (Becker CDR-210 stereo with HiFi speakers), 8-way power driver and passenger seats, rear wiper delete, and 17-inch Cup Design wheels. Aftermarket upgrades are white instrument gauges (the original black gauges are included), metal pedals and the dead pedal, and a leather shift knob.
With a production date of March 27, 1996, it was originally sold in California in August of 2021. The Carfax picks up in 2000, showing it residing outside of San Diego, California, with 57K miles. The current owner’s father purchased it in 2002 at 85K miles and it remained with him until he passed in 2013. In 2014 the title was transferred to his widow, and the car came to Colorado with his son. In 2020 the title was transferred to his son, who we are now selling it on consignment for. The records date to 2002 and detail regular maintenance, including valve cover gaskets, brakes, door striker adjustment, electrical repairs, cleaning the heat exchangers, and oil services. The Carfax is clean, but in 2002 there was an invoice showing the majority of the car being repainted, along with repairs to the left fender, door shell, and trim, along with the right rocker areas. There is also a repair to the left rear shock tower. We paint-gauged the entire car, which showed 4-8 mils. In 2022 Eurosport Automotive replaced the drive belts and repaired wiring to the blower motor. In preparation for sale, we gave it a thorough inspection and tested leak-down and compression numbers. The compression numbers were 155 psi across the board, except for 165 psi in cylinder 5. The leak-down was less than 10% across the board. The engine pulls strong, and the car drives nicely, but it needs deferred maintenance typical of a 100K-mile 993. We elected to make a thorough list and keep the new owner’s price point as low as possible. We can address any or all items for additional cost.
The list includes typical oil leaks and seeps from the valve cover gaskets, timing covers, cylinder bases, and transmission shift selector seal. When parked after a moderate drive, it leaves several quarter-sized spots under the engine. The axle boots are torn. The engine mounts, control arm bushings, and shock mounts will be in need of near-term replacement. The shocks, sway bar bushings, and tie rod ends should also be done sooner rather than later, but do not need immediate attention Other items include an inop driver’s headlight washer, rear hatch struts, and a brake fluid flush. The suspension would be a great DIY project to address the shocks, bushings, sway bar links, etc. The tires should be replaced very soon due to age and light dry rot.
That said, as it sits, this is an excellent opportunity for 993 ownership. It presents and drives wonderfully and brings smiles to the face of everyone at the hangar. It is a great example to use and enjoy or worth investing in to bring it up to its full potential. We’d like to find a new owner who will be as proud of it as we are to have it at the hangar and enjoy it for the next chapter of its story.
The Polar Silver paint on this 993 is in good condition, but not perfect. Imperfections consist of typical age-related wear in the form of very light scratches and swirls, rock chips to the front of the fenders, hood, and the lower front bumper cover (with scuffing to the plastic underneath). The rear bumper cover is slightly wavy between the exhaust pipes. Most of the car paint gauges at 4 to 8 mils, with the passenger door and quarter panel gauging between 3 and 5 mils. There is a spot on the front of the driver-side fender with evidence of body filler in a small narrow strip from the wheel well to the headlight, suggesting a deep scratch or long dent that was filled in. There are also small dents on other body panels; two to the driver door, the driver quarter panel, and two to the passenger quarter panel. There is no rust. All VIN and warning stickers are present and legible. All panel gaps are consistent. There is light pitting to the windshield; all other glass is in good condition. All trim is; the bumper trim shows light UV fade and some imperfections. The headlights are functional except for the passenger side fog light, and only the passenger side shows light yellowing and pitting (the other is in great condition). The taillights are in good condition though the reverse lights don’t work. The 17-inch Cup Design wheels have some curb rash, with the worst being on the driver-side rear, though none is severe. The Bridgestone Potenza RE750 tires are due to be replaced due to age and light dry rot.
The Grey leather interior is in very good condition, showing only minor imperfections. There are no stains or odors. The carpet is in excellent shape; the factory floor mats have minimal discoloration. The headliner is nice, with several marks on the leather, a few wrinkles in the sunroof panel, and a small hole in the passenger B-pillar. The driver door card is slightly loose on the lower carpet area. The steering wheel has been wrapped with black leather; we do not know the condition underneath. It matches the shift boot nicely. There is light fade of the symbols on the indicator stalk, but the rest of the steering column looks good. The dashboard is crack-free and unfaded. All power functions, the windows, doors, and seats are completely functional. The climate control blows hot and cold when desired. The stereo sounds great, and the display is fully functional. The center console is in great shape, with the only exception being slight wear to the leather on the shifter and handbrake. The full leather seats are in exceptional condition, with the only slight wear on the outer bolsters, the worst being on the driver’s side. The rear seats are pristine. The frunk compartment is in excellent condition; the carpet is stain-free, all fasteners are present, and there are no unpleasant odors. The owner’s manual booklet is present, as are the tool kit and spare tire. A car cover is also included in the sale.
The items outlined in our inspection in the summary paragraph are typical of deferred maintenance on a higher-mileage 993. We can address any or all of them at the buyer’s discretion. Or, you could use and enjoy the car and do them piecemeal along the way. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The oil pressure is solid, and the oil temperature remains in check. Few driving experiences can match a 993, and this example is no exception. When parked, it leaves several quarter-sized spots, which are nicely remedied by an oil pan. The clutch has no slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp. The driveline, transaxle, and wheel bearings are quiet, with no excessive vibrations. The suspension reveals its age and mileage but is driveable in its current condition. The brakes have plenty of stopping power. As it sits, this is an excellent entry into the 993 segment with lots of potential.
