The BMW E39 generation 5 Series was arguably the best 5 Series ever. The E39 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60 5 Series. The E39 is one of the best daily drivers BMW ever built. It has plenty of power, exceptional handling, sporting luxury, and the “last of the classics” E39 styling. Yet, it does all this with better gas mileage and less maintenance than V8 powered E39s. The 2.8-liter M52B28TU inline 6-cylinder engine mated to the automatic Steptronic gearbox is a fantastic combination of real-world reliability and drivability. The early M52-powered E39s are arguably the most reliable E39 every built, the M52 has none of the oil consumption issues that plagued M54 cars. The E39 5 Series was so good that many literally had the wheels driven off of them, making clean, low mileage examples extremely rare.

This 1998 528i Canyon Red over Sand Beige is a fantastic example. It was originally sold by Gebhardt BMW in March of 1998 and frequently serviced there until 2002 with 40,000 miles. Gebhardt then purchased it back and sold it as a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) car to the previous owner, who I purchased it from. I saw it in the Safeway parking lot and made him an offer on the spot—I simply had to have it. E39s like this are some of the best BMWs ever made, and this one is supported by excellent ownership history and extensive dealer records. In preparation for sale, we did a complete preventative cooling system refresh including the water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, radiator, expansion tank, and hoses. We also did a cabin air filter, accessory belts and rollers, a valve cover gasket, front brake discs, pads, and sensor, rear brake hoses, a brake flush, and a fresh oil change. In 2009 it was involved in a slow-speed rear-ending where the rear bumper cover and a taillight were replaced; the deck lid, rear quarter panel, and replacement parts were also painted. In 2012 the front end was also damaged in a slow-speed accident, but repaired to factory standards by European Auto Body. The front bumper cover was repainted again in 2014. The result is fantastic paint for its age, with the exception of clear coat failure on the roof. Receipts and records for all bodywork are included, along with all dealer service records in a 2-inch binder. As it sits this is a fantastic driver-quality E39 which will easily go over 300K miles if continued to be properly maintained. It comes with two keys and all owners’ manuals.

This E39 presents very well, partially thanks to having several panels repainted. The Canyon Red paint is in good condition with the exception of some clear coat failure on the roof. There are typical small dings, as would be expected for the age and mileage, but nothing glaring. There is no rust. The VIN tag is in place. All trim is present and in good condition. The windshield surround rubber trim was replaced after the car was photographed. The headlight lenses are slightly opaque, but could be brought back. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillight lenses are all good and all lights operate correctly. The headlights and fog light lenses have light pitting. The windshield has no cracks, but does have some light pitting. The side and rear windows are perfectly clear. The Style 29 sport wheels are in great shape, and all center caps are present. They are wrapped in Cooper CSS Ultra Touring tires which ride fantastic thanks to the tall sidewalls of the fifteen-inch wheels.

The Sand Beige Standard leather is in very good condition; having none of the normal hardening or fade that BMW leather gets from use and UV exposure. This car has clearly been garaged. The wood trim in good condition but has several cracks in the clear coat, typical of E39 trim, but they are few and far between. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. Carpeted floor mats have saved the carpets from excessive wear and staining. The seat leather is very nice; it has no tears or failed stitching, but there is wear typical of age and mileage. All power seat functions work and there is no seat twist. The instrument cluster, stereo, and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. There are no warning lights and no system check messages. The BMW Business stereo sounds fantastic. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The sunroof requires a gentle touch to close, but it opens correctly and the sunshade is on the tracks. The rear power sunshade needs new arms, but it is an easy fix. The trunk carpet has no excessive wear or stains. The factory tool kit, factory jack, and spare tire are all present. All owners’ manuals are present, along with two keys.

When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This is especially true with an E39 5 Series. That said, the E39 was probably the last solidly reliable 5 Series, and the 528i was much more reliable than the V8 powered E39s. The maintenance records for this 528i go back a decade. The records and Carfax indicate regular and frequent servicing. No common E39 530i issues are present. The M54 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not spot or leak or consume excessive oil. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip. The suspension is compliant and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. The power steering lines are weeping, as is the oil pan gasket; but neither are in need of immediate replacement. Like any E39, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but thanks to its low mileage, that shouldn’t be for some time. Despite its mileage, this 528i is truly an outlier example due to its excellent ownership history and condition. The E39 iss arguably one of the best road cars that BMW has ever built. We would like to find a new owner for it who will enjoy, care for it and appreciate it as it has been.
