2001 BMW E46 325XiT Sport Wagon (Touring) exterior photo

The BMW E46 Generation (1999 to 2005 3 Series) Sport Wagon was one of the best BMWs ever built. Time has been kind to the E46, aging it with style and grace. It occurred at a sweet spot in BMW model evolution where refinement, luxury, sporting dynamics, and reliability all intersected. The Sport Wagon (“Touring” in BMW speak) was one of the best E46s. It was just the right size and one of the few models that looked as good, if not better, as a wagon than as a sedan. It was made up of the old-school recipe that defined the BMW Ultimate Driving Machine—a normally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine, 50/50 weight balance, and a sporting and connected driving experience. 2001 was the introductory year for the E46 Sport Wagon. In “Xi” form, the added space and utility of the Sport Wagon driving through BMW’s rear wheel biased all-wheel drive system makes it the driver’s alternative to under-steering all-wheel drive Subaru and Audi wagons. As a result, clean, well-equipped, lower mileage E46 Sport Wagons carry a significant premium over their sedan counterparts.

This 2001 BMW 325XiT finished in Steel Blue Metallic over Light Beige Leatherette is an extremely rare example originally ordered to an enthusiast’s spec which includes a 5-Speed manual gearbox, the Sport Package, all-wheel drive, manual seats, halogen headlights, and no sunroof (a sicktop). In all of our years of being wagon fanatics, we’ve never seen one with such an enthusiast-centric build list. The Sport Package includes a 3-spoke sport steering wheel, sport seats, and 17-inch Style 73 wheels. It is in exceptional condition against a population of E46 Tourings that were used thoroughly—because they were Tourings! It is stock and unmolested sans a Sony stereo, but the original stereo is included if you want to revert back to stock. It came to us on consignment from a local wagon enthusiast who has owned it for the last two years. Prior to that the original owner’s tenure lasted 17 years. It has always been a Colorado car. The records show excellent dealer service history, with records from Schomp BMW dating back to 2002. In preparation for sale we replaced some worn clear bra on the hood and fenders, gave it a complete preventative cooling system refresh with a radiator, water pump, expansion tank, thermostat, thermostat housing, hoses, a coolant flush. We also replaced the driver seat outer bolster and bottom cushion, center consol cup holder and coin tray, passenger side door speaker, front Roundel, recharged the A/C system, and replaced the power steering cap O-ring. As a result, this is a turn-key lower mileage E46 Touring with very rare and desirable specifications in outstanding condition. It will make a great addition to any BMW enthusiast’s garage and is an example of one of the finest BMWs ever made!

Steel Blue Metallic is a handsome color on an E46 wagon. The paint on this example is in good condition, with no glaring scratches or scuffs. There are a handful of small dings from daily driver-duty, but nothing that isn’t livable. The front bumper has some minor rock chips and a crack on the lower passenger-side corner; it is below eye level and does not immediately catch the eye. The leading edges of the hood and fenders are protected by fresh clear bra, as such there are very few rock chips on the front end. There is no rust or corrosion. All trim and black work is present and in good condition, albeit with the UV fade typical in Colorado. The Carfax is clean and shows only two owners. The windshield is crack-free and original to the car; it has moderate pitting and a chip on the lower driver’s side. The side and rear glass is excellent. The headlight lenses are clear and crack-free; as are the marker and taillights. The Style 73 wheels are straight, but all four have minor curb rash. They are wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato P7 Tires with 25% tread remaining.

The interior condition is overall very good, especially for an E46. There are no odors and there are no signs it has ever been smoked in. The carpet has no rips, or tears; all-weather WeatherTech mats have protected it. The sport seats are in good shape with the driver’s seat bolster and seat bottom cushion being replaced by us. The Beige trim is in great shape, not being prone to cracks like the wood trim is. If it isn’t to your liking, it could easily be replaced with a different color or wrapped. The instrument cluster and HVAC panel have no failed pixels. The stereo sounds great; the head unit has been upgraded to a double din Sony XAV-AX100 unit that sounds great. All interior functions work: the heat blows hot, the A/C blows cold, and all window regulators are quiet. You don’t have to worry about the sunroof or sunroof shade failing—because it’s a slicktop! The on-board computer cycles through displays on cue and the manual-dimming rearview mirror is much more reliable than the auto-dimming mirrors. The rear cargo cover, ski bag, and spare tire are present, along with the factory tool kit. Two keys are included with the sale.

As stated in the summary paragraph, we gave this car a full round of preventative E46 maintenance in preparation for sale. All common E46 issues are either not present or have been addressed. The M54 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not burn excessive oil. The clutch take-up is smooth, it does not slip, and the transmission shifts very smoothly. The all-wheel drive system works perfectly and makes the Sport Wagon a formidable snow-driving machine! The suspension is tight and the brakes are strong. There are no driveline noises or vibrations. We ensure is passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. Like any E46, it will need continued care and maintenance, but as it sits, this Sport Wagon is a turn-key car. We would like to find a new owner who will care for it and enjoy it for years to come.
