The BMW E46 generation 3 Series is what many BMW-philes consider to be the last of the true driver’s 3 Series. The E46 occurred near the end of the sweet spot of BMW’s technological evolution, with the right balance of power, weight, size, and simplicity. It was the last 3 Series before BMW shifted from a driver-focused brand to a technology-focused brand. It came from an era where a base-model 3 Series could still satisfy the discerning tastes of the driving enthusiast and was the first 3 Series since the E30 offered with all-wheel drive. Yet, the E46 offers plenty of amenities (subtle lighting illuminating the center console from above is my favorite). The sport package’s 3-spoke steering wheel, bolstered seats, suspension, and Style 79 17” wheels add purpose. The E46 was so good that most had the wheels driven off of them, making low mileage examples hard to find. Many examples have depreciated into the price point of entry-level buyers and neglect. Clean, low mileage, well cared for examples are rare—very rare.
That is exactly what this 330i is—a clean, low-mileage, well-cared-for example. It was ordered in Titanium Silver Metallic—which always looks fantastic—over Grey standard leather. Notable options include the Premium Package, Xenon headlights, Harmon Kardon premium sound, and heated seats with lumbar support. It’s a three-owner car that was originally purchased on August 13, 2001 from Bill Jacobs BMW being regularly serviced. The second owner purchased it in 2004 and kept it for the next twelve years before it came to Colorado in 2016 with the third owner, who we purchased it from. When we got it, we gave it a complete round of routine and preventative E46 maintenance. The work included a complete preventative cooling system replacement consisting of the water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, radiator hoses, expansion tank, and expansion tank cap. We also replaced the accessory belts and rollers, front brake pads and rotors, valve cover gasket and spark plugs, oil stand gasket and VANOS oil control line, cabin air filter, engine air filter, and gave it a fresh oil change. We also replaced the front tires with fresh Continental Pure Contact tires to match the recently replaced rear tires. With only 74,000 miles, it is in excellent condition. The Carfax is clean and all panels are original. It is 100% stock and unmolested and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
The Titanium Silver Metallic paint (often called TiAg referencing the periodic table) is in excellent condition. The paint has no significant chips, nicks, or other glaring defects. Close scrutiny does reveal typical Colorado rock chips and a small paint defect on the front bumper cover, a scratch on the front left fender, and another on both rear doors. The front bumper cover and hood leading edge have none of the typical rock chips that most Colorado cars have. The VIN tag is in place, the Carfax is clean, and it has never been in accident. All trim is present and in good condition; there is some light scuffing in places. The headlights are clear and crack-free, with some very light pitting. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillight lenses are in very good condition. The windshield has no cracks or significant pitting. The side and rear windows are perfectly clear. The Style 72 wheels are in good shape, but they do have curb rash. They are wrapped in Continental Pure Contact all season tires with 100% tread remaining front and 80% tread remaining rear.
The leather is soft with none of the normal hardening or fade that all BMW leather gets from use and UV exposure. The Myrtle Wood trim is mostly crack-free except for one hairline crack in the clear coat on the shifter. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no glaring stains or tears. The A-pillar trim is slightly wrinkled. There is slight wear on the top of the steering wheel. The seat leather has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat motors, memory switches, and seat heaters work. The instrument cluster, stereo, and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. There are no warning lights on and no system check messages. The BMW Business stereo and Harman Kardon system sounds fantastic. The shifter console surround is slightly lifting. The HVAC panel functions correctly, the heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. The storage compartment forward of the shifter has a few light scratches. All power door locks work, and the sunroof and windows function exactly as they should. The sunroof shade is correctly on its tracks. The trunk carpet has no wear or stains. The tool kit, factory jack, and spare tire are present and in good condition. All owners’ manuals are present and two sets of keys are included.
As it sits, this is a turn-key 330i ready to be enjoyed by its new owner; no common E46 / M54 issues are present. The Lifetime Maintenance Schedule intervals have been reset and complied with after our recent service. The M54B30 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not spot or leak. The transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip. The suspension is compliant and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drive-train noises. The brakes are firm with plenty of life left thanks to our recent front brake replacement. We ensure it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for in the State of Colorado. It will certainly need continued care and maintenance, and it deserves it, but that should not be for some time.
