The BMW (Z3) M Coupe is the SR-71 Blackbird of the BMW M world (if you have no clue what an SR-71 is you have some Googling to do). Lockheed’s ultra secret internal Skunkworks division designed the SR-71, whereas the BMW M Coupe was the secret internal project of BMW Motorsport GmbH engineer Burkhard Goschel. Following a tradition that resulted in the E30 3 Series Touring, Goschel penned a hatchback onto the already fantastic M Roadster. Adding a lid to a platform originally designed to be a convertible resulted in the most rigid BMW ever, at the time. The M Coupe was roughly 260% more rigid than the M Roadster. It was destined to be a one-off novelty hidden deep within the basement vault of M GmbH forever, but then BMW did something shocking—and offered it for sale! Enthusiasts salivated in anticipation of a shooting brake-style hatchback with staggeringly unique lines and the power and handling to back them up. Those who could afford the M Coupe snatched them up, but the rest of the world did not receive it so kindly. Its brash and harsh lines were too much for the conservative mainstream late-‘90s BMW audience.

In 2001 BMW changed the game again, by adding the potent 300-plus horsepower S54B32 engine from the E46 M3. Along with it came revised exterior colors, doorsill and cluster ///M emblems, white-backed interior gauges, and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) in lieu of ASC. Roughly 678 S54 examples were produced, and they have become one of the most desirable BMW models of all time. Stratospheric appreciation priced most S54 M Coupes into the unattainable or “too-precious” realm, but the market has corrected recently, allowing a window of opportunity for those who have wanted one. The M Coupe’s unique and timeless design is still relevant today; the time to get one is now!

BMW M Coupes are one of our specialty vehicles at Glen Shelly. I have owned my personal M Coupe and have been heavily involved in the M Coupe community for over a decade. This Titanium Silver (often referred to by periodic table names TiAg) over black and grey leather is 1 of 32 such examples, and number 305 out of 678 total S54 M Coupes. Having barely crossed one hundred thousand miles, it is priced within the attainable realm, but presents like a much younger, lower mileage car. It has benefited from a host of recent routine and preventative maintenance, including S54 rod bearing replacement, front strut tower reinforcement, clutch and shift pin service, solid-state rear view mirror internals, and replacement of consumables: engine mounts, transmission mounts, suspension, and brakes. All common issues have been addressed or are not present. Aggressive performance upgrades make it a potent weapon on the track or autocross (although, it has never been tracked yet), but it is still civilized enough for street use—as civilized as an M Coupe could be. The Carfax is clean and has recorded regular mileage intervals throughout this M Coupe’s previous owners. Records from the last two previous owners are included with the sale. I would like to find an owner who will enjoy and appreciate it as only an M Coupe owner can.

Titanium Silver Metallic was one of the most popular M Coupe colors. There is a reason—it always looks fantastic. The paint on this example is in excellent condition; it presents like a much younger, lower mileage car. There are no significant dents or dings, and only minor pitting on the front bumper cover. There is no failed clear coat and zero rust. Exterior imperfections consist of two small paint blemishes on the hood, one small ding on the left front corner of the hood, and minor scratching on the driver’s side doorsill. All trim and black-work are present, there is minor fade on the black trim strip on the roof, but it takes scrutiny to see. No longer available factory front mud flaps are fitted, a highly desirable option that protects the rear fender flares from rock chips. Magnetic stone guards are also included with the car. All VIN tags are in place, all panels are original, and the Carfax shows no accidents. 2000 and later model year M Coupes received chrome rings around the interior headlight lenses. The outer lenses are clear and translucent. All indicator lenses and taillight housings are clear and crack-free. The Apex Arc-8 Wheels are straight and true, and have no curb rash. They are wrapped with fresh Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position tires. The wheels and tires have less than 5,000 miles on them.

Two-tone interiors are one of the M Coupe’s best design features. Black and grey compliment Titanium Silver perfectly. The carpets have no stains or tears and are protected by BMW M factory floor mats. The seat leather is in excellent condition with no tears, stains, or failed seams. The seat bushings have only slight rock. All seat motors work, as do the seat heaters. There is slight creasing on the driver’s seat back bolster, but nothing excessive and much less than most M Coupe’s have at this mileage. The 3-spoke steering wheel has no excessive wear. The instrument cluster has no blown out pixels and all gauges work correctly. The CD-43 Business CD player has no blown out pixels. The lower switch panel has some spider cracking in the switch backing plate, but it isn’t cracked all of the way through (a very common issue). The iND shift knob is nicely weighted and ergonomically correct. The glove box does not sag; it has had a reinforcement kit installed. The auto-dimming rearview mirror has been preventatively replaced with one with solid-state internals. If left original, they eventually leak fluid on the center console. All interior functions work correctly except for the moonroof. It was diagnosed inoperative and quoted $800 to repair at shop labor rate. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The rear hatch divider is present and in great shape. The rear hatch carpet is in good shape. Underneath, the tool kit and owners’ manuals are present.

This is a turn-key M Coupe; all major and preventative maintenance is up to date. It has always been properly owned and benefitted from regular oil changes and routine maintenance. It comes with records from the previous owner notating significant common and preventative maintenance items, including S54 rod bearing replacement and clutch and shifter replacement. The records begin with a pre-purchase inspection at 91,376 miles from BMW South County in El Cajon, California. The following work has been performed in the last four years and ten thousand miles, listed in reverse chronological order:

  • S54 Valve Adjustment
  • Replace Battery
  • Replace Mirror with Solid-State Review Mirror
  • Diagnose INOP sunroof
  • Replace Windshield
  • Clutch Kit
  • Resurface Flywheel
  • Replace Shift Pin Bushings
  • Reseal Gearbox
  • Rebuild Shifter Bushings
  • Cam Position Sensor
  • Change Gearbox Oil
  • Replace Spark Plugs, Coil Packs, Acc Belt Pulley
  • Install Turner Delrin Control Arm Bushings
  • Install Bridgestone Potenza Tires and Apex Arc-8 Wheels
  • Front End Alignment
  • Install Stainless Steel Brake Hoses
  • Brake Fluid Flush
  • Install AKG Motor and Transmission Mounts
  • Replace Rod Bearings with Coated Rod Bearings
  • Install Stainless Steel Clutch Line
  • Install Rear Brake Calipers
  • Replace Fuel Filler Cap

In preparation for sale we gave it a fresh oil change and repaired hairline cracks in the strut tower seams (a common Z3 issue). High-end specialists SVE Autobody did the work, which included a front-end alignment. We also had them inspect the trunk floor spot welds (a much more important common issue), and they were free of any signs of failure.

The S54 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There is no Vanos rattle or lifter knock. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The clutch and shifter are crisp and there is no 5th gear lean. The brakes are comically firm and are nearly fade-proof thanks to their size and the M Coupe’s light weight. The ground control suspension is firm, but tolerable for street duty. The negative front camber is a welcome improvement over the stock M Coupe suspension. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine, but the solid motor and transmission mounts do transmit directly into the cabin—which is a good thing! The suspension bushings are also solid, which is, likewise, a good thing.

My S54-powered M Coupe is set up very similarly to this one and I have spent several years fine-tuning it into a successful time trial car. I would be happy to share my experience and offer guidance from the lessons I have learned. S54 M Coupes underwent ridiculous appreciation in recent years, but the market has corrected—which is also a good thing. We have priced this one accordingly for its condition, ownership history, and build. I would like to find a new owner for it who shares my enthusiasm and who will continue to be a good steward of it.
