The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet it was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was also offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, a thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates.
This 2001 Titanium Silver Metallic (TiAg) over Extended Heritage leather interior E39 M5 lies in the perfect sweet spot of the VIN diagram of options, mileage, maintenance history, and price. There is a reason that silver was one of the most popular E39 M5 colors; TiAg accentuates the refined and subtle lines perfectly. The factory options are extensive and listed in the outline above. This example is stock and unmolested, clearly always being owned by mature BMW enthusiasts. It was originally delivered in January 2001 in Fremont, California. It remained in the Bay Area until coming to Colorado in 2008 with 44,000 miles. Since then, Gebhardt BMW and BMW of Loveland (formerly Cos BMW) have maintained it under several owners, the last of which offered it to us. We found little to gripe out on our inspection, the only major squawk we needed to address was replacing the power steering lines. The Carfax is clean and is consistent with the maintenance records. The majority of the vehicle has been repainted, with the exception of the hood. The color match is perfect, we do not see any signs of trauma, and we do not know why it was repainted. The hood paint gauges at 3-4 mils, everything else gauges at 5-6 mils. As it sits, it is an excellent example of an E39 M5, one that presents exceptionally well for its miles. It strikes the perfect balance between an M5 that you can be proud of, but also use and enjoy. We would like to find a new owner to write the next chapter of its story.
The Titanium Silver paint is in great condition for its age and mileage car. The finish is brilliant thanks to being repainted at some point. The hood paint gauges at 3-4 mils, everything else gauges at 5-6 mils. There are no notable fisheyes or build-ups on the edges of the panels, it was clearly a high-quality paint job. Close inspection reveals typical imperfections in the form of rock chips and some paint chips. The worst are moderate rock chipping on the lower leading edge of the hood and front bumper cover and a nickel-sized paint chip on the left rear door. The bottom of the front bumper cover has some scraping on it. The rear bumper cover also has some vertical scratches in the clear coat. All trim and black-work is present and in very good shape. The headlight lenses have light pitting, but they and the indicator lenses are clear and crack-free. The Angel Eyes have no missing filaments and all bulbs work. The windshield has some pitting, but is crack-free. The wheels are straight and true, but all have small paint chips and light curb rash with the exception of the left rear, which has moderate curb rash. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 tires have been recently replaced with 80% tread remaining and 2021 DOT dates.
The interior is in remarkably good shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. Overall, the extended leather is soft and presents well. There is age-related wear on both the front seat outer bolsters, and both front door handles with the worst being on the driver’s side. There is no seat twist. The steering wheel has light wear. The rear seats are clean with only minor wear. The headliner is straight and clear. The rearview mirror has a bubble in it, which we can replace if desired. The wood trim is in excellent shape, with only two hair-line cracks in the passenger side door trim and a small crack in the corner of the passenger side dashboard trim strip. The instrument cluster LCD screen has no failed pixels, but the nav screen does have a one-inch section of vertical lines on the right-hand side. The cup holders work. All power functions, seat motors, seat heaters, and the power rear sunshade mechanism function like they should. The door lock and window regulators work. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds. The tool kit and the DVD / TV module are present.
This E39 M5 is a turn-key driver-plus caliber car. The maintenance records show thorough and consistent maintenance, brake fluid flushes, and oil services. The S62 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The VANOS units and tensioners are not excessively noisy, and there are no significant oil leaks. There is light seepage at the valve cover gaskets, and the transmission output and shift selector seals. We replaced leaking power steering lines and bled the system. The clutch is original, but it does not slip and the take-up is not excessively high on the pedal. The transmission shifts smoothly and there are no excessive driveline vibrations. The brakes have been recently serviced with slotted and cross-drilled rotors and fresh pads on all 4 corners. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado.
