If you are unfamiliar with the ZHP, here is the original BMW North American press release for the ZHP or Performance Package.

The 330i Performance Package has been created exclusively for the U.S. market for enthusiasts by enthusiasts at BMW Individual, a division of BMW M GmbH. There is no aspect of the driving experience that has not been enhanced by the Performance Package. Modifications to the 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, which include different camshafts and performance-modified Digital Motor Electronics, yield a ten horsepower increase to 235. For the first time in a 330i a six-speed manual transmission will be standard. With the Performance Package it will include a short-throw shifter. The package also includes a shorter final drive ratio. The benefits of these modifications are immediately apparent - the 330i with a Performance Package will accelerate from 0 - 60 miles-per-hour in 6 seconds, about half a second faster than a standard 330i. To match the straight-line performance a new sports suspension, more aggressively tuned than the 330i’s standard sport suspension, is mated to 18-inch wheels with mixed-size performance tires. In addition to the wheels and tires the exterior of the 330i Performance Package is distinguished by its Aerodynamic Package, black headlight trim, high gloss shadowline trim and a new exhaust that not only appears but also sounds more aggressive. The look and feel of the interior has been refined with cloth and Alcantara sport seats matching the Alcantara sport steering wheel. An anthracite headliner and Black cube aluminum trim complete an ambiance tailored to the enthusiast. Silver cube aluminum trim is optional. The instrumentation includes red needles while the tachometer reflects the modified engine’s 300 higher rpm limit. Production of the 330i Performance Package will begin in March 2003 with the first cars arriving at BMW centers in April.

Clean ZHPs are getting hard to come by, especially in Imola red over natural brown. The ZHP is the most evolved and developed four-door E46, and a more practical alternative to the two-door only E46 M3, that said from someone who has plenty of seat time behind the wheel of both.

2003 was the first year of the ZHP, BMW speak for the Performance Package offered on the E46 generation 3 series (1999-2005). 2003 ZHPs were only offered in four-door form (sedan lovers rejoice!) and only with a 6-speed manual transmission. Imola red was one of the best exterior colors and natural brown leather was the second most rare interior color, some sources say less than 120 examples were offered. Parker, our lead employee, has owned this ZHP for just over a year, and he has continued the high-level care and maintenance that this car deserves. He purchased it in June of 2016 wit 88,800 miles, when I was selling it on consignment for another friend and avid BMW enthusiast. It has always been properly owned and maintained, and is exceptionally clean. There is over $15,000 worth of receipts in recent maintenance and tasteful upgrades. BMWs are like airplanes; proper care, preventative maintenance and repairs are more important than strictly age and mileage.

We would like to find an owner for this ZHP who will continue to care for it and appreciate it for what it is. It certainly isn’t the cheapest ZHP on the market, but its condition, rarity, wheels, maintenance pedigree, and upgrades are worth the premium. Clean E46’s are getting hard to find, and this is especially true for the ZHP.

This ZHP is properly sorted. All common issues and wear prone areas have been addressed using OEM BMW, BMW Performance, or better parts. The interior was converted by previous owner to natural brown and black cube trim from anthracite cloth / suede interior with aluminum cube trim, a very desirable upgrade.

The previous owner performed lots of preventative maintenance and tasteful upgrades, highlighted below.

One glance and the exceptionally clean condition of this ZHP is your first impression. Imola Red is an exclusive color that distinguishes the ZHP from lesser E46 variants, being only offered otherwise on the M3. Its condition presents like a much younger, lower mileage car. Forged BBS RGR wheels are one of the few wheels that can top OEM Style 135’s. The M appearance package, black gloss kidney grills and shadow line trim are sporting cues to those in the know. Inside the natural brown / black leather is the perfect color to complement the Imola exterior. The M3 steering wheel (one of BMW’s best) and ZHP shift knob (another BMW best) allow precise and communicative inputs. This is one of the last great driver’s cars from BMW. All of the little bits that BMW tweaked add up to a sum greater than their parts. On paper they might not seem that special, but 5 minutes behind the wheel and it is clear they are. A tighter steering ratio, shorter final drive, sport suspension, and higher redline in combination with the Dinan intake, performance brakes, and wonderfully sticky Michelin Super Sport tires allow incredible levels of performance with only the slightest amount of talent. The refined and composed E46 platform is predictable, yet wonderfully neutral thanks to the square, not staggered, 8.5” wheels at each corner. All ZHPs should have come this way

All maintenance is up to date and all common E46 issues are either not present or have been addressed. Oil changes have always been done more frequently than BMW’s recommended interval (a killer of these cars). Inspection II was done in July of 2014, and I completed an Inspection I the last time I sold it at 88,800 miles. The engine idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline. The cooling system has been preventatively replaced with an ECS Level III Ultimate cooling kit, including the water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, expansion tank, radiator, drive belts, pulleys, and tensioners. The intake DISA valve has been replaced, along with a bad oxygen sensor. The valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket have been replaced. There are no fluid leaks at all. All door lock and window regulators work, the left rear window regular was recently replaced. There is no driveline, wheel bearing, or suspension noise or vibrations. The sport suspension is firm and compliant. The brakes are strong and do not fade easily, thanks to the upgraded rotors and pads. The only thing of note is an intermittent SES light due to the Dinan Intake. We have consulted several BMW specialists on this, and have been instructed it is a common issue. We would be happy to swap it out for a stock intake, if desired. Aside from this nitpick, it is a turn-key car that needs nothing.

The Imola Red paint is in exceptional condition. There are no faded areas or clear coat failure. Two summers ago, at 84,500, miles the front bumper cover was repainted by a high-end body shop to repair a glaring scratch the previous owner refused to live with. At the same time the hood and front fenders were re-sprayed to correct the minor pitting all cars of this age have. The orange peel and finish are perfectly factory matched. He finished the job by replacing all black-work and trim with new factory bits. The result is an exterior with none of the leading edge pitting or UV faded black-work that Colorado cars have. When the current owner purchased it shortly thereafter the front end was painted, he had high-quality Suntek PPF applied to the entire front clip to ensure that the pit and chip-free front stayed that way. There is absolutely no rust anywhere. All VIN tags are in place. The windshield was replaced in October of 2014 at 74,000 miles; it has no cracks or pitting. The window glass and shadowline trim are perfect. The headlights are not faded, protected by clear bra, and all indicator and marker lights work. The BBS RGR wheels have no curb rash aside from a minor 2” strip on the passenger rear, and no chips, dents, or bends with excellent center caps. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are worn evenly with 50% tread remaining. The only imperfections I could find were a dime-sized ding on the passenger door and trunk lid, and a small crack in the paint of the rear bumper cover.

Overall the interior is in great shape. The natural brown / black leather under an anthracite headliner is a stunning combination. The overall leather condition on the front and rear seats are in good shape, but the front seats have some creases and a few dye spots. They are presentable and don’t have the excessive bolster wear that most E46’s have. The seller is including an extra natural brown rear seat with good leather if the buyer would like to replace the imperfect panels. The carpet has no stains or tears. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The set of factory floor mats fits perfectly. The headliner does not sag. Both A-Pillar covers have been replaced; the old ones were warped (a common issue). All switches and functions work correctly. There are no blown out pixels in the instrument cluster, radio screen, or HVAC. The heat blows hot and the air conditioning blows cold, the blower is quiet and the final stage resistor is good. The Harmon Kardon BMW Business premium sound system is fantastic. Other than the front seats, the only imperfections I can find are worn suede on the driver’s door seal (an easy fix) and a small chip in the right rear passenger door handle.
