The Honda S2000 was the 1990’s iteration of the iconic S roadsters, some of Honda’s first cars. The 1990s was an era when Honda set the standard of quality, efficiency, and a proper sporting experience—an era when Honda engineers were fanatical and focused. The S2000 was built with this fanaticism at the exclusive Takanezawa facility, along side of the NSX and first-generation Honda Insight (the most fanatical Honda of them all). At the heart of the AP2 (post-facelift) S2000 was the front mid-mounted 2.2-liter F22C1 engine. Thanks to a healthy dose of Honda racing technology, the lightweight aluminum F22C1 spins freely to a screaming 8000-RPM redline, while offering a more tractable torque curve than the even higher-revving pre-facelift motor. This was mated to a 6-speed transmission (with even shorter ratios in the first five gears for the AP2) and one of the best shifters in any car ever produced, along with a limited-slip differential. A rigid chassis, advanced suspension, weight conscious approach, and driver-focused interior round out the sports car package. As Honda and the world have marched ever forward in the technological automobile arc, the uncompromising focus of the S2000 made it one of the most desirable sports cars of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
This Formula Red over Black leather AP2 Honda S2000 came to us through a local owner and longtime friend of Glen Shelly. With the exception of a modern Kenwood stereo, this example is bone-stock with only 59,000 miles on the odometer. Factory standard kit and options include the 3-spoke sport steering wheel, power windows and door locks, power convertible top, push button start, glass rear wind deflector, and the limited-slip differential. This car was originally delivered by Vern Eide Honda in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where it saw regular maintenance with oil change intervals more frequent than factory recommendations. The Carfax shows it was a fair-weather driver based on the low mileage and months it was serviced. In 2017 it became a garage queen, living in Colorado and accumulated just 5,000 miles in the last four and a half years while continuing to receive fastidious maintenance. As it sits, this S2000 is an exceptional example of one of the finest driver’s cars in recent history. In preparation for sale, we replaced the shift knob with an OEM unit and mounted fresh Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus high performance all-season tires (photos were taken before these were added). We wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across country. We would like to find a new owner who appreciates what it is and will continue to care for and enjoy it for the next chapter.
New Formula Red is a resplendent color for the S2000 and it offers a great contrast with the black interior, convertible top, and headlight + taillight internals. The paint appears to be all original, measuring in the 4-5 mil range on every panel, with all body panel VIN tags in place. The clear bra over the front bumper, leading third of the hood, and mirrors appears to have done its job, as there are visible signs of rock chips in the protective film but only a few that made it through to the paint. This could be removed and/or replaced, but we opted to leave it as it is presentable and will continue protecting the paint for those brisk autumn drives. The windshield shows some signs of pitting and a couple of small rock chips, while the rear window and glass wind screen are clear and crack-free. The headlight lenses are clear and only slightly opaque. All indicator lenses and taillight housings are clear and crack-free. The body is in overall excellent condition, with one thumbnail-sized paint abnormality near the driver’s side windshield cowl. The convertible top is in great condition and presents one small tear just above the driver’s side convertible top latch. The wheels have light to moderate curb rash, but are presentable. They are wearing freshly mounted Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus tires.
Overall the interior is also in very good shape. The carpets are in great shape and have been protected factory floor mats. Factory floor mats are present, but in fair condition. The seat leather is in good condition with no tears, though there is moderate wear on the driver’s backrest bolster and some visible creasing on both seats. The 3-spoke steering wheel is in great shape. The instrument cluster shows all pixels fully functional and all gauges work correctly. The Honda CD player also has no failed pixels and the dashboard mounted controls function correctly. The center console shifter surround has some visible wear; we replaced the OEM shift knob due to light wear (the original is pictured). All interior functions work correctly; the power windows, power top, cruise control, and power mirrors. The factory keyless entry functions correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The optional glass wind deflector is present and in great shape. The trunk carpet is clean, and the tool kit and spare tire are present.
The brilliant thing about the S2000 is Honda’s renowned quality and reliability combined with an exceptional sports car platform. The F22C1 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to its stratospheric 8200 RPM redline! The VTEC functions correctly and engages with a kick in the pants at 6000 RPM. It does not leak or spot. The shifter is crisp and tight—one of the best shifters in any car ever! The transmission does not grind or make any unhealthy noises. The clutch is equally intuitive and take-up is firm. There are no driveline or wheel bearing noise or vibrations. The suspension is firm, yet compliant and the AP2 cars received updates to make them handle a bit more predictably than the bump-steer/oversteer habits of the early AP1 cars. The tires have less than 100 miles on them. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado.
