The E92 generation M3 (2008-2013 model years, the 2 designates a 2-door) marks the end of an era for the BMW M3. It was the last M3 that followed the high revving, high compression, naturally aspirated, individual throttle body recipe that started with the iconic original E30 M3. If you are an M car fanatic of the old school, this is a big deal in the turbo-charged world of the present. The E92 M3 is the most highly evolved and potent example of that old-school recipe. Put another way, the E92 M3 is a fire breathing monster that shrieks to a redline well north of 8,000 rpm while inhaling through no less than eight snarling throttle bodies and wailing through an exhaust unimpeded by turbochargers. It is the M3 with the volume turned up to eleven. And, because it’s an M3, it still offers wonderful daily drivability, comfort, luxury, and practicality. Car and Driver, Motor Trend, and Edmunds called the E92 M3 the finest, single best, and most complete car on the market. Even the sanctimonious Jeremy Clarkson said it was the best car and there is no point in thinking otherwise.
This 2009 Jerez Black over Black leather E92 M3 is a fantastic example, showing only 21,000 miles on the odometer. It was originally delivered by BMW of Rockville, Maryland and serviced there by the first owner for the next six years. After that it went to Massachusetts for a brief stint before coming to Colorado with the current owner. He is a long-time BMW enthusiast who is retiring from his airline job and downsizing, hence the reason for selling. It is absolutely stunning in the dynamic dark metallic blue Jerez Black—an evolution of Carbon Black, a color that defined the previous generation of BMW M cars. Jerez Black highlights subtle aspects of E92 M3 design language that other colors wash out: not only the power bulge, but also the cut lines in the hood and waistlines along the body. The black leather inside is accentuated by black carbon leather trim and it is enthusiast-optioned. This includes the most important option of all—the six-speed manual gearbox. M Dual Clutch gearboxes are fantastic, but if you are an old-school BMW head like everyone here at Glen Shelly, there is just no replacement for rowing your own gears. Other desirable bits of kit include M Drive, the M Electronic Dampener Control, and the Cold Weather, Performance, and Technology packages. The records include a summary of dealer maintenance and options, a VIN decode, Blackstone oil analysis, and invoices for the air bag recalls. It received a fresh oil change 2,000 miles ago. It comes with two key FOBs and all owner’s manuals. The E9X M3 market has diverged, and this E92 M3 ZCP is an outlier in the available population due to its mileage, exemplary condition, and options. We would like to find a home for it where it will be well cared for, appreciated and enjoyed.
The Jerez Black paint on this example is in excellent condition, the finish is brilliant and in the sun the metallic flake shimmers like snowflakes at dawn. The front and rear bumper covers have been refinished at some point; the front does have a few typical Colorado rock chips that have been touched up and protected with clear bra. The clear bra covers the whole front bumper, along with the leading edges of the hood and fenders, along with the mirror caps. The windshield has no cracks and only minor pitting. The side and rear windows are in excellent shape. The headlights, markers, indicators, and brake light lenses are brilliantly clear and free of cracks. All trim work is present and correct. The wheels have no glaring blemishes or curb rash and the Nankang Noble Sport NS-20 High Performance tires have excellent tread remaining.
The interior is equally pristine. It still smells like the day it was delivered. There are no odors, tears, scuffs, or stains. It has never been smoked in. The carpet and floor mats are in excellent condition. The steering wheel leather is soft and supple with no wear. The leather carbon fiber trim is perfect. The other leather covered trim panels, leather shifter, e-brake handle boot, as well as the leather seats are all soft and supple. The seat bolsters have no excessive wear with only minor creasing. The driver’s side seat belt extender can be slightly finicky, as is typical of all E92’s. All other interior functions work correctly; the power heated seats, windows, door locks, passenger side seat belt extender, heat, air conditioning, comfort access, etc. There are no failed pixels in the cluster displays or iDrive screen. There are no check lights, warning lights, or check control alerts. The BMW Individual stereo sounds amazing. Two key FOBs are included, along with the owner’s manual leather booklet.
The records show that maintenance has been done more frequently than the BMW factory intervals. The 1,200-mile engine break-in was done on schedule, along with other scheduled services including the brake fluid, differential fluid, engine and cabin air filters, and more. Oil changes were done on time interval in lieu of mileage. The airbag and blower motor wiring recalls were performed within the last year. The recent Blackstone Oil Analysis shows no rod bearing deterioration and a healthy engine, and it had a recent oil change. The S65 fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not throw any codes, and no warning lights are present. The transmission shifts smoothly and the clutch take up is correct. The M EDC suspension functions in all modes and is compliant. There are no driveline vibrations or noise. The brakes are strong with plenty of life left. As it sits, it is a turn-key M3 ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
