The BMW M2 was the olive branch that BMW offered to enthusiasts who felt that M cars had become too big, too heavy, and too disconnected. Oh what an olive branch is was! The M2 restored our faith with plentiful power, supreme handling, excellent manners, impeccable communication, and retina-separating brakes in a just-the-right-size package. An aggressively flared exterior and well-appointed interior completed the package of what BMW declared the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002tii. Journalists (including this one) were skeptical of that claim, as the E46 M3 was the most relevant comparison—which is not a bad thing. Nonetheless, the M2 was proof that BMW could still build a proper M car, despite the lack of an S preceding its motor designation. Yes, the M2 really is that good. If you haven’t driven one, you should—but be careful because you might just drive it home. It’s one of the few new BMWs that I would own myself, which is why we have one in the hangar.
This 2017 Black Sapphire Metallic M2 with just over 11,000 miles came to us on consignment from the original owner, a fellow BMW enthusiast. He was originally purchased through an allocation from Sandia BMW in April of 2017 and brought it Colorado. It is opted with the M Performance package ($5,100 deailed in the outline above), the Executive package ($1,400 also detailed above) and most importantly the old-school way with a 6-speed manual transmission—a rarity in the modern BMW world. He added the M Performance carbon fiber rear diffuser and opted for the remote exhaust valve controller so you can adjust the sound on the fly. Shod in Black Sapphire Metallic over Black Dakota leather with the M Performance carbon accents, it looks downright sinister—but it wasn’t sinister enough for the owner! To remedy that, the he turned it over to Dinan dealer 3Zero3 Motorsports for what is essentially the Dinan P2 Power Package, but without the exhaust since it was already fitted with the M Performance Exhaust. The kit included: a Dinan Big Turbo, Dinan Intake, Dinan Stage 4 Tune, Dinan Front Mount Intercooler, along with a Fabspeed Sport Cat downpipe good for 430 wheel horse power and 474 wheel pound feet of torque. Then he had them mount Öhlins Road and Trail coilovers with Stoptech Street Performance brake pads so it would corner and brake to match the added power. The Öhlins are tuned on the softer side for better ride quality on the street. Records from all parts installation from 3Zero3 Motorsports, along with the orignal window sticker showing the M Performance Package and other options are included with the sale. The exterior and interior cosmetic condition is excellent, with the only notable defects being some rock chipping on the lower fender flares, some nicks in the clear bra, and a couple small scrapes on the underside of the front bumper. The front clip, mirror caps, side skirts, and rear arches of the rear bumper are protected by clear bra. The tires are a size up from stock, with Michelin Pilot Sport P4S in 255/35/19 in the front, and 285/35/19 in the rear. It comes who two key FOBs, all owners’ manuals, the factory floor mats, a clean Carfax, and all aforementioned records and receipts.
This is a very special BMW M2 and represents a great value for the performance that it offers. It has more power than an M2 Compeition (M2C), and will also out-turn it thanks to a tuned Öhlins suspension. Dinan upgrades are considerably expensive, but they add reliable performance that keeps the factory warranty intact. Much like a proper BMW M GmbH car, they are a sum greater than their parts that don’t compromise the orignal DNA the M engineers intended. It is priced at fraction of what it would cost to build, while retaining the more refined styling of the original M2 with reliable performance that will exceed an M2 Competition in virtually every arena.
