The 1984-1991 BMW 3 Series, known generationally as the E30, is the one model more than any other that earned BMW the Ultimate Driving Machine reputation. E30s are one of our specialty vehicles at Glen Shelly Auto Brokers. I have restored, rebuilt, and sorted a dozen E30’s over the years and currently own three E30’s, including an iX, an iS and a Touring. The E30 Touring was the pet project of BMW engineer Max Reisbock. He literally built the first E30 touring out of a wrecked 323i in his garage after work—it was so good that BMW put it into production (with a few minor changes). The E30 Touring started a legacy of sporty BMW wagons that remains to this day. All late-model Tourings were spec’d with the 325 suspension and 4-wheel disc brakes. The extra pillars added rigidity over the Coupe and Sedan and there is slightly more rear weight bias, making it handle great. Ironically, 4-cylinder Tourings take the best advantage of this, having the least understeer. Fold down rear seats, shadowline trim, the M3’s roof antenna, and Euro-only options like Smiley headlights make the Touring one of the most exclusive and sporty E30s. The U.S. market never got the Touring, but they are legal now thanks to the 25-year exemption. Most were subjected to harsh climates and regular duty thanks to their increased utility. Rust in the rear hatch is a common issue, making dry climate history an important consideration on the import country. Left-hand drive and a clean body are the most important factors in finding a touring, as engine swaps are easy compared to body work.
I purchased this 1990 318i Touring from the same connection that I got my personal Touring from. He has contacts in Europe that find only the cleanest cars. It is an Italian Market Touring that has no rust, an important consideration for the rust-prone rear hatch lids. The Euro M40 4-cylinder engine is certainly not the fastest E30 engine, but the Touring’s excellent suspension and balance it makes up for it in the corners. Sterling Silver Metallic is an excellent color that always looks great in sun or shade and when clean or dirty. It is a high-quality repaint and looks very good as a result. The Anthracite Cloth interior compliments this perfectly and is very good shape. The Sony stereo, metric instrument cluster, analogue clock, and a very desirable M Tech II steering wheel set it apart from a regular U.S. E30. The rear hatch cover is present and the fold-down seat mechanisms work correctly. There are a few typical dashboard cracks, the headliner has a few issues, there is a faint odor smoke odor (like someone smoked in it with the windows down twenty years ago, not offensive at all and I hate smoke), and like most Tourings, this one doesn’t have air conditioning. We gave it a complete mechanical inspection, which it passed with no issues. Lowering springs, 16-Inch AZEV wheels, and a Remus exhaust are nice additions. As it sits this is a very nice E30 Touring. You can enjoy it like it is or engine-swap it into a monster. I have a super-ETA 2.8-liter block / i head / G260 swap I can offer as parts or fully swapped for extra. It comes with a clean Colorado title.
