The E34 was the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, and the most advanced of the traditional BMW’s, both in form and function. Its form is made up of iconic BMW 3-box design language, square kidney grills, double headlights, and tidy lines that were smooth and sleek in comparison to its E28 predecessor and smaller E30 3 Series sibling. At its release, BMW accurately described it as “Sophisticated styling that is aerodynamic while in motion, and admired when parked.” For function, the E34 525i was the first BMW to get the M50 2.5-liter inline 6-cylinder engine in 1992, one of the first of the “modern era” engines. It is one of the most reliable BMW power plants ever produced, which earned the late model 525i the reputation as one of the most reliable luxury cars of all time. Many examples have seen well over 300,000 miles and are still going strong. Finding an example that has low mileage, is well kept, and is in good cosmetic condition is no easy task.
This Oxford Green over Parchment leather 1994 525i is a repeat visitor to Glen Shelly. We originally found it 2016 from the original owner, a doctor in Massachusetts, with only 46K miles. We then sold it to the current owner in 2016 and now it is back on consignment with 75,500 miles on the odometer. It is the definition of a time-capsule BMW, and being a late-model E34, one of the very best! Other than a modern Kenwood stereo it is stock and unmolested, driving very much like the day it was delivered by Don Rosen BMW in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia). The original window sticker shows a base price of $38,425, with options of ASC-T, heated front seats, on-board computer, and an automatic transmission bumping the sticker price to $41,570—that’s $78,161 in today’s money! When we purchased it in 2016 we did a round of maintenance including a preventative cooling system overhaul: water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, coolant level sensor, a tensioner and pully, and a cooling system flush. We also did the valve cover gasket, spark plugs, brake light switch, and cleaned up the lower door seal areas. Under the current owner it has received fresh shocks and struts on all four corners, a four-wheel alignment, and regular oil changes. In preparation for sale we couldn’t find much to grip about. The Carfax is clean and documents the mileage through the original owner’s 22 year tenure. The records binder picks up with our first sale in 2016 and documents all of the subsequent maintenance. As it sits, this a fine example of one of the best BMWs ever built, we would like to find a new owner to tell the next chapter of its story.
The Oxford Green paint is in very good condition and indicative of the car’s lower mileage. Some panels have been repainted, gauging at 3-4 mils for the original panels and 7-9 mils on the painted sections. The paint match is perfect. Imperfections consist of typical rock chips along the leading edges, slight swirling, and a few very faint dents and dings. When it arrived from the East Coast in 2016 we had some corrosion in the lower door seals and trim addressed. The undercarriage is very clean for an East Coast car, but it does have some areas of rust. At some point it was undercoated, which has done a very good job of keeping corrosion at bay, but there are two troublesome areas just behind both front wheels (pictures are on our website if you are reading this elsewhere). All trim is present and accounted for. The windshield glass is crack-free, with only light pitting. The headlight lenses are crack-free, as are the indicators. The fog lights, markers, and taillights are also clear and crack-free. The Style 2 wheels are straight and true with minimal curb rash. They are wrapped in Bridgestone Blizzak tires that will need replacement in the near future. We are happy to negotiate on their replacement of the buyer’s tire choice.
The interior is in exceptional condition. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains and tears, and is protected by carpet floor mats. The headliner does not sag, but there is some wrinkling in the pillar coverings and the rear parcel shelf typical of E34s. The leather seats are in excellent shape with only light wear. There is light creasing and bolster wear on the driver’s seat. Non-Sport E34 seats are some of the most comfortable seats BMW ever made! All seat adjustments work as they should and there is no seat twist. The armrests lock correctly. The heated seats both work. The dashboard is crack-free and the center vent cover is not warped. The wood trim is in excellent shape. The original four-spoke steering wheel is in great shape. The instrument cluster has no failed bulbs or pixels and shows no warning lights. The onboard computer functions correctly and shows no check items. The HVAC control panel works as it should, the heat blows warm and the A/C blows cold. The Alpine Stereo has Bluetooth and matching illumination; it sounds fantastic. There is a matching E34 removable cup holder that fits in the middle of the center console. The power door locks work. All power windows work and the regulators are quiet. The door cards are in excellent shape, with a small nick in the armrest on both the driver and passenger side. The trunk carpet is in great shape. The factory steel spare is included. The factory tool kit is complete. The owners’ manual is included along with the original window sticker and two keys with keyless FOBs are included in the sale.
The mechanical condition of this car is consistent with its mileage. The records show regular and frequent services. The M52 fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strong. The majority of the cooling system was overhauled in 2016 at 45.6K miles. There are a few typical oil seeps underneath at the rear of the oil pan, center and rear of the head gasket, and at the automatic transmission cooler lines. None require attention at this time, nor should they in the mid-term future. There is no timing chain or valve train rattle. There transmission does not slip, the transmission pan is dry, but the output shaft seal and shift selector seal have seeps. There are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations. The suspension bushings are healthy and the shocks and struts are compliant. The brake rotors have a slight lip with 7 mm remaining on the front pads, and 5mm in the rear. There is some rust on the exhaust heat shield forward of the catalytic convertor, but the exhaust pipes themselves are healthy. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in Colorado.
