1995 BMW 540i/6 (HE53) Sport exterior photo

1995 was the last year and most evolved variant of the E34 (3rd Generation) BMW 5 Series. It was the most advanced of the traditional BMWs, both in form and function. Its form is made up of the iconic BMW 3-box design language, square kidney grills, double circular headlights, and sleek tidy lines. It was more refined than its E28 predecessor, yet still traditional compared to its E39 successor. At its release, BMW accurately described it as “Sophisticated styling that is aerodynamic while in motion, and admired when parked.” It also said, “The more cars the world makes, the more desirable the BMW 5 Series becomes.” Two successive decades have revealed those words to be true, as modern cars have become bloated, numb, infotainment-centric appliances. Simply put, the E34 is one of the best looking and best driving 5 series of all time. It was the first 5 Series to get a V8 engine. The 530i and 540i V8 models were released in 1992. For the 1995 model year, a 540i with a six-speed gearbox was released, the 540i/6, known also by its VIN code, HE53. These are some of the most desirable E34s there are.

This Arctic Grey Metallic over Silver Bison leather 1995 540i/6 is a known car within the E34 community. A previous owner built it into its current form with M sport front and rear bumpers, European “smiley” headlights, and clear indicators, markers, and taillights. Arctic Grey accentuates the classic lines of the E34 perfectly, especially with the flare of the M Sport front and rear bumpers and Style 37 M Parallel wheels. It has been repainted in the original Arctic Grey at some point and looks fantastic. Maintenance records show consistent services over its lifetime, including dealer services for the first 50K miles. After that there are independent specialist invoices showing the clutch, clutch slave and master cylinders, multiple M60 items like oil leaks, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, belts, and pulleys, power steering components, suspension bushings, front and rear shocks, and regular fluid flushes. In preparation for sale we gave it a complete inspection and replaced the valve cover gaskets, rear plastic window guides, passenger front shock mount, master cylinder to reservoir clutch line, spark plugs, front sway bar end-links, power steering lines, and noted a recent fresh oil change with the previous owner. There is a slight leak from the rear main and transmission seals, along with a few other areas on the engine. None of them warrant immediate attention, and it is an E34 540i—it’s going to leak. That said, M60 engines are more reliable than the M62 engines that followed in the E39 5 Series, having none of the timing chain guide issues. Early M60 BMW engines had a history of premature failure due to nikasil cylinder linings and America’s poor sulfur-rich gasoline at the time, but if they were going to fail, they did so decades ago. The previous owner had the car outfitted with some other exclusive E34 / M5 parts, including a European instrument cluster in kilometers, which he removed when he sold it. He replaced the Euro cluster with the US cluster, which has the odometer in mileage instead of kilometers. The coding plug from the Euro cluster is included in the sale. The US cluster that he used was higher mileage (converted from kilometer) than the Euro cluster, and does not show a tamper dot. I do not know when the Euro cluster was originally installed, but the Carfax shows the last reported mileage at 221,302, which would have been kilometers, at Winslow BMW. The mileage currently indicated on the cluster is likely close to accurate, but since I cannot verify it I am reporting the total mileage as unknown. Overall this 540i/6 is very nice, but it isn’t perfect. It will make a great driver as it is or starting point for the new owner to take it to the next level. It comes with a clean Carfax, Colorado title, and two keys.

The Arctic Grey paint is in great shape; it has been repainted at some point and is very presentable. Close scrutiny does reveal minor rock chips, nicks, and scratches. There is no chassis or body rust, and the lower door trim strips are in excellent shape (a common area). All VIN tags are in place and it has never been in an accident. The driver’s door hinge mounting point has been repaired with the reinforcement kit and shows evidence of a previous repair. The windshield glass has no cracks or excessive pitting. The headlight and indicator lenses are clear and crack-free, as are the markers and taillights. All trim and black-work are intact and in good condition. The wheels are in okay shape, but they do have some curb rash, the worst being on the passenger side. The left rear has a different finish than the other three wheels, but it is subtle. The tires are Nitto Motivo on the front and Goodyear Eagle on the back with good tread remaining.

Interiors are a weak spot of E34s and this one is in very good shape, being Silver Grey it does show more dirt than other colors. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean and have been protected by factory floor mats. The sport seats are presentable, but do show some creasing and moderate bolster wear on the driver’s seat. All power seat functions, including the power headrests, work properly. The dashboard is crack-free and the passenger airbag cover is only slightly lifted. The wood trim is crack-free except for hairline cracks in the center console, passenger dashboard, and passenger door. The shifter console trim piece is slightly raised on the corners, but it is not warped like most are at this age. The instrument cluster LCD’s, on-board computer, and CM5903 radio, have no blown out pixels. All interior functions work, the heat blows warm, air conditioning blows cold, and the blower motor bearings do not chirp. The headliner does not sag and the rear deck fabric is not wrinkled. The owner’s manuals and radio manual are present, along with one code card. The tool kit is almost complete, and a BMW sunshade and cargo straps are included.

The maintenance history and items we replaced in preparation for sale are listed in the summary paragraph. The M60 starts on command and idles smoothly. It pulls strongly to redline and has no running issues. It does have the aforementioned oil leaks and it will continue to leak, because it’s an M60. The clutch and shifter operate correctly and there are no driveline vibrations. The suspension is compliant, but does have some wear. It is serviceable for the foreseeable future, but would require refreshing if you wanted to make the car perfect. The Bilstein shocks do have a lifetime warranty. The steering is typically vague for a higher mileage E34, but also tolerable for the foreseeable future. There are no check engine, ABS, or check control lights. The brakes are good and the tires have good tread remaining.
