The 993 chassis (1995 to 1998 911s in the US market) was the pinnacle of air-cooled Porsche evolution. It all started some thirty-five years earlier with the introduction of the one model that came to define Ferdinand Porsche’s vision of a 6-cylinder, rear-engine, sports car with a simple and elegant design. The 911 was as equally at home on the drive to work as it was in the victory circles of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its air-cooled rear-engine recipe was so good it that remained largely unchanged for the first twenty-five years. Then, in 1989 with the 964, it underwent a revolutionary development that was massive by Porsche standards. Just as the dust had settled from the 964, the 993 made another earth-shattering leap forward with a yet-again completely revised engine, suspension, and a modernized appearance. Despite its technological advancements, the 993 did not forsake its iconic design language, Porsche’s impeccable craftsmanship, or the 911’s air-cooled DNA—which could not be said of its successor, the 996. The 993 marked the greatest and final chapter of the air-cooled Porsche 911. When viewed through the lens of the present, it has only become more significant as the inevitable march of time and technology have proven how utterly excellent the 993 was.
This 1996 Porsche 993 911 was ordered in Midnight Blue Metallic (L39C) over a matching Midnight Blue leather interior—the ultimate ‘90’s color combo and a vast departure from the more common Grey or Camel interior usually matched with Midnight Blue. It was originally delivered by Prestige Imports in Lakewood, Colorado, and remained in Colorado through 2006 under the second owner. The Carfax shows it being regularly dealer serviced at Prestige and Stevenson Imports. From Colorado, it spent the next seven years in Texas, being dealer serviced at San Juan Audi before landing at renowned Porsche specialist Tim Holt, of Holt Motorsports. The current owner (who also owns a matching midnight blue 3.2 Carrera) purchased it from Holt and brought it to Colorado shortly afterwards. I am selling it on consignment for him. It has clearly always been properly owned and cared for; the current owner is extremely meticulous and detailed. The only modifications are a Fister exhaust, 3-spoke steering wheel, and Bilstein B6 Performance shocks. There are maintenance records from the current owner, with the Carfax showing regular dealer services going back to 1996. The records show regular oil changes, service inspections and routine maintenance. Recent maintenance includes: an air injection valve, lower valve cover gaskets, and an oil change. We had an independent pre-purchase inspection done by Porsche specialists, Eurosport, which noted an oil seep at the camshaft housings, another seep at the right rear shock, and the rear brake pads and rear tires nearing the end of their serviceable life. We can address these issues at the buyer’s discretion. As. It is a clean, well-cared for and unmolested 993. Records to 2010 are included in a three-ring binder, along with a clean Carfax, two keys, and all owners’ manuals.
The Midnight Blue Metallic paint is in excellent condition. The finish is brilliant and presents fantastically, and there are very few notable imperfections. The driver’s rear quarter panel has been repainted. We performed a paint-gauge report that is available upon request. The front end has been spared of any major chipping, with only light pitting on the front bumper and leading edges of the hood and fenders (it was protected by clear bra up, which the current owner had removed). The headlight, indicator and taillight lenses are clear and crack free. The fog lights have light pitting; there is a small crack from a rock on the driver’s side lens. The windshield glass is crack-free with light pitting. All trim is in place. The Cup wheels are in great shape with only minor paint chips. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. The fronts are at 30% and the rears are due for replacement.
Open the door and you are greeted with that lovely air-cooled 911 smell. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains thanks to factory floor mats, which are in excellent condition. There is a small tear in the center hump of the rear carpet between the seats. The door cards are not separating where the armrest meets the map pocket. The seat leather is soft and there is only minor wear and slight creasing on the bolsters. The standard seats are manual with electric height and back adjustment; the fore/aft adjustment on the passenger seat does not work. The dashboard is clean and crack-free. The steering wheel and shifter leather is fantastic. The steering wheel has been replaced with a black three-spoke unit; the original blue four-spoke is included with the sale. The instrument clusters show no check engine or warning lights. The Becker CR-210 Stereo works and sounds fantastic. The power door locks, window switches, sunroof, and mirror switches work correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows coo, but it is a 993, so I wouldn’t call it cold. . There is a Porsche crest mounted on the right side of the glovebox. The frunk carpet is present and in good shape. Underneath of it, the spare tire, mobility kit, and tool kit are present. All owners’ manuals are also present, along with two keys.
The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There are few driving experiences that can match a well-sorted 993, and this example is no exception. When parked, there are no large oil seeps or drips, just slight occasional seepage from the camshaft housings. The clutch has no slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp and precise. The driveline, transaxle, and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The suspension is firm, yet compliant and the 17-inch Cup wheels look perfect with the lowered suspension. The brakes have plenty of stopping power. As it sits, this is a turn-key 993 ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across country. We would like to find a buyer who will continue to care for it and appreciate it for years to come.
