The BMW E39 generation 5 Series was arguably the best 5 Series ever. The E39 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60 5 Series. A 6-cylinder E39 is one of the best daily drivers BMW ever built. It has plenty of power, exceptional handling, sporting luxury, and the “last of the classics” E39 styling. Yet, it does all this with better gas mileage and less maintenance than V8 powered E39s. The 2.8-liter M52B28TU inline 6-cylinder engine mated to the automatic Steptronic gearbox is a fantastic combination of real-world reliability and drivability. The early M52-powered E39s are arguably the most reliable E39 ever built; the M52 has none of the oil consumption issues that plagued M54 cars. The E39 5 Series was so good that many literally had the wheels driven off of them, making clean, low mileage examples extremely rare.
This Titanium Silver Metallic, often referred to as TiAg due in reference to the periodic table elements over Black Leather 2000 528i is a fantastic example. It has desirable options including the M Sport steering wheel, M Sport suspension, heated seats, xenon headlights and Style 5 sport wheels. It was originally sold in Chicago in November of 1999, where it remained for less than two years and just over 3,000 miles before coming to Colorado in 2001. It has remained here ever since and has always been well cared-for, which is supported by a stack of service records that is included with the sale. Recent maintenance shows the oil pan, oil pan gasket, oxygen sensors, and battery being replaced. In preparation for sale we: replaced the oil stand gasket and Vanos oil hose, several power steering hoses, the engine and cabin air filters, A/C belt and roller, and gave it a fresh oil change. The Carfax is clean and it has never been in an accident. As it sits this is a fantastic driver-quality E39 which will easily go over 300K miles if continued to be properly maintained. It comes with one key and all owners’ manuals.
This 528i presents very well; it is in above average condition given its age and mileage. The Titanium Silver Metallic paint is in good condition. There are typical small dings, as would be expected for the age and mileage, although nothing glaring. The underside of the front bumper cover is sagging slightly on the driver’s side. There is no rust. The VIN tag is in place. All trim is present and in good condition. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillight lenses are all clear and all lights operate correctly. The headlights and fog light lenses have light pitting. The windshield has no cracks, but also has some light pitting. The side and rear windows are perfectly clear. The Style 5 wheels are in great shape. There is curb rash on the passenger front wheel, but the others only have minor scuffing. They are wrapped in Continental ContiContact tires in the front, and Ironman iMove gen2 AS tires in the rear. The fronts are at 90% and the rears are at 70%.
The Black Standard Leather interior is in great condition, having none of the normal hardening or fade that BMW leather gets from use and UV exposure. The wood trim is in good condition but has several cracks in the clear coat, typical of E39 trim. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears. Floor mats have saved the carpets from excessive wear and staining. The seat leather is very nice, with no tears or failed stitching, and no significant bolster wear. All power seat functions work and there is no seat twist. The instrument cluster, stereo, and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. There are no warning lights and no system check messages. The BMW Business stereo sounds fantastic. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The trunk carpet has no excessive wear or stains. The factory tool kit, factory jack, and spare tire are all present. All owners’ manuals are present, along with one key.
When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This is especially true with an E39 5 Series. That said, the E39 was probably the last solidly reliable 5 Series, and the 528i was much more reliable than the V8 powered E39s. The maintenance records for this 528i date back to 2003. The records and Carfax indicate regular servicing. No common E39 530i issues are present. The M52TU engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not spot or leak or consume excessive oil. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip. The suspension is compliant and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. Like any E39, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but thanks to its history and mileage, that shouldn’t be for some time. The E39 is arguably one of the best road cars that BMW has ever built. We would like to find a new owner for it who will enjoy, care for it and appreciate it as it has been.
