The BMW Z3 roadster made its public debut in 1995 in the Bond film GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan behind the wheel. The scene with 007 and Natalya (Izabella Scorupco), her hair blowing in the wind, was the picture of top-down motoring—except for the dirt road, the Cessna 172, and the villain’s evil lair in Cuba. Nonetheless, if you were 18 years old (as I was) and saw that movie, you wanted a Z3—and Natalya!
Time has only been kind to the Z3, aging it into one of the best retro-modern ‘90s-era roadsters. It has the fluid and graceful lines of a proper British sports car, with the raw power and driving dynamics that can only be found in a BMW. The Z3 is a truly beautiful car with perfect proportions. Post-facelift non-M Z3s had raised rear fenders exclusive to the 2000 through 2002 model years. The Z3’s driving dynamics resulted from BMW’s focus on giving you exactly what you needed, and nothing more. The Z3 cockpit is unapologetically driver-focused and old-school analog gauges ensure a proper roadster experience. And, best of all, the Z3 was produced right here in the good ‘ole USA in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
This 2000 BMW Z3 2.3 Roadster with only 44,900 miles is finished in Titanium Silver Metallic over Black Oregon Leather. It is 100% stock and original, featuring the 5-speed automatic transmission with manual and sport modes, M sport steering wheel, heated seats, and BMW Business CD43 HiFi stereo system. The 2000 model year was one of the best years in the Z3 timeline, the perfect intersection of technology, evolution, and reliability. It was a cross-over year, featuring the updated post-facelift lines and raised hips, dynamic stability control (DSC) instead of Automatic Stability Control (ASC), and later Titanium Silver Metallic (TiAg in periodic table speak) to the earlier Arctic Silver Metallic paint. Yet, the 2000 model year retained the M52TU (technical update) engines, some of the most reliable BMW engines produced and had none of the oil consumption issues of the later M54 engines. The Z3 2.3 is actually powered by the 2.5-liter M52B25TU engine, an odd BMW naming nomenclature that was unique to the cross-over years.
This Z3 was originally delivered in Portland, Oregon, in September of 1999 and split its time between Oregon and Wyoming over several subsequent owners. The Carfax shows frequent regular services, registrations, and no damage. It came to us from a good friend and Glen Shelly regular. Recent maintenance includes a brake fluid flush, transmission fluid flush, and an oil service. In preparation for sale, we couldn’t find much to nitpick. We did a differential service, power steering fluid flush, and replaced the tires with fresh Continental ExtremeContact DWS all-season tires. Typical Z3 issues are minimal; the trunk floor spot welds are in great shape, the seat bushings are solid, and the glovebox does not sag. As it sits, this is an excellent example of one of the Z3s out there, ready to be driven and enjoyed by its new owner.
The Titanium Silver Metallic paint is in excellent condition. The paint appears to be mostly original, with the entire car paint gauging at between 4 and 6 mils, except for the hood, which gauges at up to 7 mils. Imperfections consist of small rock chips and scratches, light scuffing on the lower front lip, and a large scuff on the right rear bumper cover. There is no rust. All VIN tags are present, as are all factory warning stickers. The power convertible top functions correctly and is in excellent shape, having no rips or tears. The rear window has virtually no opaqueness, and the stitching is intact, with only slight separation of the rubber trim piece (it does not warrant addressing at this time). The windshield glass is original, with no cracking and only light pitting, with the exception of a larger pit in the lower left corner. The headlight lenses are clear and crack-free, as are the markers and taillights. The Style 55 “star spoke” wheels are excellent, with no notable flaws. They are wrapped in fresh Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 all-season tires.
The Black Oregon leather interior is also in exceptional condition. The Oregon leather is textured on the seat inserts and door cards, adding an air of luxury. There are no odors, and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is protected by matching Oregon textured floor mats. The three-spoke M sport steering wheel is perfect, and is the most desirable Z3 steering wheel. The dashboard and trim are also perfect. The fine wood trim is excellent, having none of the typical hairline cracks they get—including the shifter! There are no warning lights and no failed pixels. The BMW Business CD43 stereo sounds great, and the volume knob does not slip. The seats are excellent, with only light creasing on the outer bolsters. There is no seat bushing play; the passenger seatbelt guide is cracked, but functional. The headliner is in good shape. The factory wind deflector is a nice addition, as is the rear trunk storage system. The trunk floor spot welds are in excellent shape. The factory tool kit, jack, and spare tire are present. There are three keys, but the owners’ manual is missing. We have the stereo code noted for future reference.
There are no glaring common Z3 issues; the trunk floor spot welds are not sunken, the seat bushings have no play, the glovebox does not sag, and the convertible top is in great shape. The M52 starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There is no VANOS rattle. The cooling system has no leaks or seeps (it should be preventatively addressed at 60K miles per the Old School Maintenance Schedule). There are no notable oil leaks or seeps. The transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip; the previous owner reportedly serviced it. There are no driveline or wheel-bearing vibrations. The suspension is tight, and the brakes are strong. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado.
