The BMW E38 generation 7 Series was the last of an iconic form that BMW had tastefully and incrementally evolved since the flagship luxury sedan’s introduction in 1977. The successor E65 7 Series’ departure from this lineage, due to Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s polarizing “flame surfacing” and “Bangle butt” design language, actually appreciated the value of the E38 while it was still being sold. The post-facelift 740i M Sport, sometimes called the Shorty Sporty, was the best E38 by far. Unlike the long wheel base variants, the shorter and lighter 740i, got a true M Sport package consisting of:
By 2001, the model had undergone many other updates, including more standard options, clear turn signal indicators, color matched side skirts and bumper fascia, and a wider navigation screen. The result is the most modern iteration of a classic, the last of the classics – the E38 740i M Sport.
This Anthracite Metallic over Grey Montana leather 2001 740i M Sport is a fantastic example. Anthracite was one of the best E38 colors and had suited the paint-matched trim and side-skirts of the M Sport wonderfully. In addition to the M Sport package, it was originally optioned with the Cold Weather Package. This included heated front and rear seats, rear side airbags, Logic7 HiFi with DSP, xenon headlights, and a host of other amenities. It was originally delivered via a European Delivery through CO’s BMW Center of Loveland, Colorado on November 2, 2000. The German registration, insurance card, and international driver’s license are included with the original purchase documents. Once it was Stateside, it was regularly serviced at CO’s BMW, remaining with the original owner until November of 2007 with 71,000 miles. The second owner kept it until June of 2020 with 130,000 miles, splitting time between Colorado and Georgia and having it serviced frequently at Houska Automotive in Fort Collins and Critz BMW in Savannah, Georgia. The owner of Dynamic Imports purchased it October of last year and sold it to a Glen Shelly regular earlier this year, for whom we are selling on consignment for. He bought it to replace an E39 wagon, but at the end of the day, he just wasn’t ready to give up his Touring. The service records date to the original delivery, along with the window sticker. Recent maintenance done by Dynamic Imports includes the thrust arms, a four-wheel alignment, valve cover gaskets, VANOS solenoids, and timing cover gaskets. The timing chain and guides were also inspected at this time, and they are healthy, but it would be prudent to plan on replacing them as the mileage nears the 150K mark. Going further back, the records show the water pump, fan clutch, a coolant flush, serpentine belt, ABS module, and brakes. As it sits, this is a fine example of an E38 M Sport in a fantastic color with proper ownership. We would like to find a new owner for the next chapter of its story.
The Anthracite Metallic paint presents very nicely, but close inspection does reveal small imperfections in the form of light swirling, a few scratches, and some rock chipping. The paint gauges at 4-6 mils with the exception of the trunk, which has been repainted (there is a receipt for this in the records). There are numerous small dents and dings, along with a few scrapes on the lower front spoiler and rear valance. There are zero signs of rust. The trim is presentable, with some faint cracking, UV fade, and wear commiserate with the rest of the body. The rear “sail” rubber is missing, with a few broken clips on the driver’s side. The windshield has some pitting, but no cracks. The side and rear window glass are excellent. The headlight lenses are slightly opaque and crack-free, as are the fog lights. The taillights are are in excellent shape with the exception of cloudy reverse light lenses. The wheels have slight imperfections a few small spots of curb rash but are overall very presentable. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport All-Sesason 4 tires with 2020 DOT dates and 10/32 tread remaining.
The interior is very good shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The seat leather is in good shape with moderate creasing and some wear on the driver’s seat bolster. All seat functions work, including the seat heaters; there is no seat twist (but it’s only a matter of time for any E38/E39). The dashboard is clean and the airbag cover is not warped. The Vavona wood trim is in very good shape, with just a few faint hair-line cracks in the shift knob and center console trim. The cup holders function, but the OBD port cover does come off on occasion. The steering wheel is great shape with minimal wear and no failed stitching. The instrument cluster does not have any failed pixels, and neither do the navigation screen or HVAC displays. The navigation screen is dark (a common issue), but still readable in all but direct sunlight. The BMW Premium sound with Logic7 DSP sounds amazing. There are no check codes on the onboard computer and no engine, DSC, or ABS warning lights (the trifecta) illuminated. The door locks and window regulators work, as does the sunroof—but a wise BMW owner uses the sunroof sparingly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. Two keys, the rear cargo net, original window sticker, and the owners’ manuals are included in the sale.
The maintenance history is the most important factor in any E38 and this example has detail records dating to the original purchase and lots of recent maintenance. The E38 fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The majority of the cooling system has been refreshed from original. There are typical M62 seeps, but no active leaks or drips (it is only a matter of time with any M62 however). The valve cover gaskets have a small seep at each rear corner and the power steering lines are wet at the cooler and reservoir. Neither need attention at this time or in the near future. There are no SES or “trifecta” ABS and DSC lights. The transmission shifts smoothly and pan gasket is dry with the exception of a small seep at the shift selector seal. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The suspension is healthy, offering that wonderfully smooth, yet agile E38 ride. The front lower arms have some dry rot in the outer boots, but neither are failed. The rear upper forward arms do have visible cracks in their boots. Both are currently serviceable and could be deferred until more suspension work is required. The brakes are in good shape with just a slight lip on the rotors and 7-9mm of pad thickness on each corner. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. Like any E38, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs, but the majority of the heavy lifting items have been done by the current owner. We would not hesitate to drive it across country or use it put it in regular operation.
