Colorado M5
The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was also offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates.
This 2001 Titanium Silver Metallic (TiAg) over Extended Heritage leather interior E39 M5 is a fantastic example of one of the best BMWs ever built. In addition to the long list of standard amenities outline above, it is outfitted with Technical Graphite trim, a recovered M-color stitching leather steering wheel, Bilstein coilovers, a Euro front license plate, blacked-out rear valance, and a muffler delete with Vibrant exhaust tips (one of the best exhaust notes ever to grace a BMW). The Technical Graphite trim is notable as a subtle but rare addition that compliments the black leather wonderfully. Technical Graphite has more texture than Piano Black E39 trim, and is a very rare and difficult to acquire E39 part. The M5 has been a Colorado car for the entirety of its life, being delivered by Winslow BMW on February 5, 2001. The Carfax and records show regular and frequent services over three owners. It came to us on consignment from the current owner, a fellow airline pilot who has owned it since 2013 and completed a host of recent cosmetic improvements and maintenance. In 2018 he had the front bumper cover replaced and repainted due to typical cracking, which is reported as damage on the Carfax. Recent maintenance includes brakes and rotors on all four corners, freshly mounted Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires, the water pump, radiator, and hoses, and DJ Auto headlight lenses. A recent Blackstone Oil analysis shows the rod bearings to be healthy. In preparation for sale, we didn’t find much to gripe about other than a few weeping power steering lines, which we replaced, a pixilated LCD screen, which we repaired, and the center vent trim (which was photographed prior to its replacement). As it sits, it is an excellent example of an M5; one that presents with much lower miles than what the odometer reads. We’d like to find a new owner who will continue its ownership pedigree and write the next chapter of its story.
The Titanium Silver paint is in good condition for a high mileage driver-level car. The finish is brilliant with signs of use and considerable care. The current owner has had the car for eight years and kept it garaged alongside his E28 M5 while performing gradual updates that substantially slowed this car’s aging process. There are visible signs of rock chips on the front hood and rear bumper, but the are presentable. There is a notable scratch on the driver’s side front and rear fenders. All paint and panels are original except for the front bumper cover, which was replaced and repainted at Downtown Denver BMW in 2018 due to rock chips. The paint presents with a uniform depth and shine through all of the signs of use and invites this super sedan to be driven hard and often. All trim and black-work is present and in very good shape. The Euro DJ Auto headlight and indicator lenses are clear and crack free. The Angel Eyes have no missing filaments and all bulbs work. The windshield is pitted and crack-free. The wheels are straight and true with recent refinish work. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ tires are worn evenly and have lots of tread remaining.
The interior is in remarkably good shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The front seat leather is soft and presents minor signs of cracking and wear. The dashboard leather is soft and crack-free. The recently-recovered steering wheel presents exceptionally well. The rear seats are similarly clean with only minor wear. Door cards present very well with some patina on the driver’s door. The headliner is straight and clear. The Piano Black interior trim and BMW rubber floormats provide modern contact points that preserve the interior’s timeless aesthetic. The instrument cluster LCD screen has no failed pixels thanks to our recent repair. All power functions, seat motors, seat heaters, and the power rear sunshade mechanism function like they should. The door lock and window regulators work. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds. The tool kit and the DVD / TV module are present.
This E39 M5 is a turn-key driver-plus caliber car. The current owner has performed thorough updates and maintenance to ensure this car drives well for years to come. The radiator, hoses, and water pump were replaced around 140,000 miles. Auto Headlights were added including an updated LCM and windshield sensor along with requisite coding. The S62 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. The VANOS units and tensioners are quiet, and there are no significant oil leaks. The clutch take-up is correct and the transmission shifts smoothly. There are no excessive driveline vibrations. The brakes have been recently serviced with Akebono Euro (low dust) brake pads and Meyle rotors on all 4 corners. The muffler delete and Vibrant exhaust tips provide just the right amount of S62 V8 sound and many of us at the shop remarked that this is one of the best sounding M5s we have heard.
