The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet it was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can comfortably accommodate four adults while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, a thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been worse.

This 2001 Oxford Green Metallic over Caramel Extended Heritage Leather M5 has only 23,850 miles! It is a true unicorn, an investment-grade example of one of the best BMWs ever built in a stunning color combination that exemplifies BMW’s era of greatness. Only 71 Oxford Green over Caramel Heritage leather M5s were delivered to the North American market, and this example is a 1-owner time capsule with only 23.8K miles. In addition to the M5’s lengthy standard kit, factory options include Dynamic Sound Processing (DSP), the TV module, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, and the factory rear-spoiler deletion. The only modifications are an Escort Passport SR1 radar detector, which is period correct, but will still keep you out of trouble, WeatherTech floor mats (in addition to the factory floor mats, and an optional Tec Cup holder. We replaced the latter with the factory storage cover (which is not pictured currently).

The M5 was ordered to spec from BMW of San Francisco and delivered through Gebhardt BMW in Boulder, Colorado. It has remained here ever since, residing in Lafayette, Colorado, under the original owner’s stewardship. It has been fastidiously maintained by Gebhardt BMW, Murry Motors BMW, Schomp BMW, and independent repair shop Bimmerhaus. Complete maintenance records since day one are included in the records. Notable maintenance includes regular oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid services, replacement of the cam position sensor, VANOS solenoid, upper left rear control arm, and a four-wheel alignment. The latter two resulted from a pothole, which also bent a rear wheel, which was replaced, and the wheels were refinished. In preparation for sale, we couldn’t find much to gripe about. We had the wheels refinished again in the correct Chrome Shadow color, repaired a missing pixel in the instrument LCD screen, removed protective film (that has preserved the front end), and completed an extensive paint correction.

The condition is nearly perfect and consistent with the miles. The paint gauges at 4 to 8 mils over most of the car, with deeper areas ranging into the double digits in spots. The Carfax is clean and all panels are original. The current owner has had the front bumper cover repainted during his tenure, but has not had any other panels refinished. We suspect the deeper areas occurred in the pre-delivery or transportation process before the current owner took delivery from the BMW dealer. The paint match is factory-perfect and unrecognizable outside of close and heavy scrutiny. This M5 represents a rare opportunity to own one of the greatest BMWs ever made in a unique color combination with impeccable stewardship. Of all the M5s we’ve sold at Glen Shelly, it stands out as one of the best. We’d like to find a new owner who appreciates what it is and will continue its stewardship pedigree for the next chapter of its story.

The Oxford Green Metallic exterior of this M5 defines a show-quality finish. As mentioned above, the paint gauges between 4 -10 mils throughout, with several deeper sections in places. The Carfax is clean and all panels are original. The paint match is perfect. Imperfections are few and far between, consisting of several minute paint chips. The bottom of the front bumper cover has minimal scrapes and nothing that can be seen from the top side. The rear bumper cover is pristine. The car is rust-free, including the troublesome body seam inside the fuel filler cap. All VIN stickers and plates are present. All trim and black work are present and pristine. The headlight and lenses are crystal clear and functional front to back. All glass is pristine. The newly refinished wheels are perfect with fresh M emblems. They are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero run-flat tires measuring 245/40 18” in front and 275/35 18” in back with 2019 and 2015 DOT dates, respectively. Tread depth is 11/32 in front and 10/32 in back. We can replace these with the buyer’s tire of choice if desired for extra.

As expected from the quality of the exterior, the interior is truly exemplary. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The driver’s side floor mat has very light wear. The headliner is pristine and the sunroof functions correctly. The embossed leather has a great feel—soft and supple to the touch—and presents well. There is little to no wear on the front seats, save for a few wrinkles to the seat bottoms, and the back seats are virtually untouched. There is no seat twist, and the seat heaters work. The door cards are pristine, other than very slight wear at the top of the driver’s door card pocket. The dashboard is clear and crack-free. There are no cracks in the wood trim. The steering wheel leather is excellent, and the trim is flawless. The instrument cluster LCD screen has no failed pixels, and neither does the Nav screen (which has the Caramel-specific tan background instead of grey). The cup holders work; the original airbag warning sticker remains from the original delivery date. All power functions work as they should. The center console has light wear to the handbrake, but the shifter is immaculate. Climate control blows hot or cold when required. The trunk is clean, the tool kit is complete, and the DVD / TV module is present and functional. Two keys, the owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, and all records are included in the sale.

The mechanical condition of this M5 is on par with the cosmetic condition. Unlike many low-mileage BMWs, this one has been treated to continual and frequent maintenance. The records date to the original sale and show the original 1,200-mile break-in service, regular oil, coolant, power steering, brake fluid flushes, fuel injector service, the fuel sensor o-ring, inlet cam sensor, VANOS solenoid, the aforementioned control arm, exhaust cam sensor, and several batteries over the years. There are no common E39 issues like noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, or inoperative door and window regulators. The S62 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It has no VANOS rattle or excessive lifter noise. There are no fluid leaks or drips. There are no SES lights or engine management codes indicating carbon build-up. The clutch has zero slip, and the take-up is correct. The shifter is tight and crisp. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet, with no vibrations. The brakes are excellent and recently replaced. Like any M5, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs, but it is well worth it and will reward proper care for years to come.
