The BMW E53 generation X5 was the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)—BMW’s words—that started the modern BMW crossover movement. Launched in 1999, the X5 grew to become BMW’s most popular crossover. This was because it was based largely on the E39 5 Series—arguably one of the best BMWs every made. In SAV form, the X5 offered a taller ride height and more utility than its sedan counterpart. Yet, unlike other crossovers, it retains BMW’s fantastic driving dynamics and despite its height and weight, it can still go around corners properly. And, like its 5 Series sibling, BMW festooned it with a host of performance and luxury options and amenities. E53 X5s heralded from the era before the disposable BMW (the current era), where one could expect notable reliability as long routine maintenance is kept up on. The most reliable X5s are 3-liter 6-cylinder examples mated to a manual gearbox—if you can find one…
This X5 is an incredibly rare 5-speed manual with the Sport Package. The Sport Package added the Sport Leather Steering Wheel, Sport Self-Leveling Suspension, Sport Seats, Shadowline Satin Chrome Trim, and Style 69 18-Inch Star Spoke wheels. It also has the Premium and Cold Weather Packages, Xenon headlights and a host of other options. Equipped with a manual gearbox and the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder M54 engine, it is also the most reliable X5 you can buy. There are no automatic gearboxes to fail or costly V8 engine maintenance, but the M54 is no slouch either, delivering that buttery smooth linear torque curve that inline 6-cylinder BMW engines are famous for. This X5 is a 3-owner Colorado car; Gebhardt BMW originally sold it on March 29, 2001. All owners have been BMW enthusiasts and it has always been serviced at Gebhardt or independent BMW specialists Autosport Werks. The Carfax shows no accidents and regular oil changes and services including common X5 items like the cooling system, brakes, control arms, and window regulators. In preparation for sale we gave it a complete inspection and did a full round of X5 / M54 maintenance including: the driver’s door carrier, front shocks and shock mounts, right front sway bar end link, oil stand gasket, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and a fresh oil change. The self-leveling suspension is leak-free and fully functional. In 2012 the left front fender and pillar were damaged (by I suspect a small tree branch). Pearl Autobody repaired all parts to factory spec; the receipt is included in the records. It is 100% stock and ready to be enjoyed by its new owner.
Titanium Silver is one of those colors that always looks fantastic. The paint on this example is in very good condition. All panels are original including the previously mentioned left front fender. Other than minor scratches and dings, the only notable imperfections are light UV fade on the black plastic trim bits and running boards, along with slightly opaque headlight lenses which we cleaned up after photographing it. All trim is present and in good condition. The shadowline trim looks great. The xenon headlights are bright and the halo rings have no failed filaments. The fog lights, marker lights, and taillights have good lenses and operate correctly. The windshield has no cracks or pitting. The side and rear windows are tinted, which protects the interior from UV fade and keeps things cool in the summer. The running boards have slight discoloration. The factory VIN sticker and all decals are in place. The Style 69 sport wheels have no curb rash, but there are minor areas of paint discoloration. They are wrapped in Firestone Destination ST high performance tires with 40% tread remaining.
The Black Standard leather interior is in excellent condition. Most X5s have hauled kids, dogs, etc. and the interior took a beating as a result. This interior shows no evidence of that. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets are clean, with no stains or tears; BMW floor mats are included. The dashboard leather is in good shape, the vents do not sag, and the airbag cover is not lifting. The wood trim is also in good shape, but it does have a few faint cracks. The seat leather has no tears, failed stitching, or bolster wear. All power seat functions and seat heaters work. The instrument cluster has no failed pixels; there are no warning lights and no system check messages. The stereo has one line of dead pixels along the lower third of the LCD, but the text is still readable. The BMW Business HiFi stereo system sounds fantastic, there are no blown out speakers. The HVAC displays have no failed pixels; the heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The heater blower is quiet and the final stage resistor functions correctly at all fan speeds. All power door locks and windows work exactly as they should. The sunroof operates on command and the shade is on the tracks. The rear carpet has no wear or stains. The rear side window sunshades extend and retract correctly, but the latching clips are broken (an easy fix). The lift gate has firm shocks and the electric latch functions correctly. The rear hatch cargo divider is missing, but the factory tool kit, jack, and spare tire are all present. All owners’ manuals are present, along with two keys.
When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship, and this example has clearly benefitted from such. The Carfax and records show proper BMW stewardship in the form of regular oil changes, inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance. We brought all routine maintenance up to date as outlined in the summary paragraph. As it sits, no common X5 issues are present. The M54 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There is no VANOS rattle. The transmission shifts smoothly and the clutch take up is correct. The self-leveling suspension is compliant and does not sag even after a long sit. There are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drivetrain noises. The brakes are firm and it passes emissions with no problems, which we pay for. Like any X5, it will certainly need continued care and maintenance, but it is a turn-key car.
