The BMW E46 Generation (1999 to 2005 3 Series) Sport Wagon was one of the best BMWs ever built. Time has been kind to the E46, aging it with style and grace. It occurred at a sweet spot in BMW model evolution where refinement, luxury, sporting dynamics, and reliability all intersected. The Sport Wagon (“Touring” in BMW speak) was one of the best E46s. It was just the right size and one of the few models that looked as good, if not better, as a wagon than as a sedan. It was made up of the old-school recipe that defined the BMW Ultimate Driving Machine—a normally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine, 50/50 weight balance, and a sporting and connected driving experience. 2001 was the introductory year for the E46 Sport Wagon. In “Xi” form, the added space and utility of the Sport Wagon driving through BMW’s rear wheel biased all-wheel drive system makes it the driver’s alternative to under-steering all-wheel drive Subaru and Audi wagons.
This Japanrot over Camel and Black leather 2002 325Xi Sport Wagon is an outstanding example of an E46 touring. Not only does it look the part, but it also has the extra power to back it up thanks to an M54B30 swap from a 330Xi. Highlights are a ZHP front bumper cover, ZHP instrument cluster, Sport, Premium and Cold weather packages; along with old-school Halogen headlights. It has retained the automatic gearbox, which makes it great for daily driving duty, but we can manual swap it for extra if desired. It was originally delivered in Utah and came to Colorado in 2004 and has remained here ever since. The 330Xi swap was completed by Bimrtechnik LTD of Sadalia, Colorado earlier this year. The engine was a M54B30 from a 2005 330Xi with approximately 105K miles on it (we have the Carfax for the donor car). The M54B30 was resealed including the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and oil level sensor seal. The exhaust manifold gaskets were replaced, along with a fresh oil change, air filter, cabin air filter, and spark plugs. The cooling system was also refreshed along with the power steering lines VANOS oil supply line, crankcase vent valve (CCV) and lines, and a transmission fluid flush. The 330Xi brakes and sport suspension were also swapped over. A ZHP cluster was added (it shows 153K miles, the Carfax shows the chassis miles at 190,358 in February of this year, which was also confirmed by the lighting control module). The Carfax also shows an accident in 2013. We have been driving it all summer to suss out any remaining squawks and it has made a great shop wagon. In preparation for sale we completely overhauled the power steering system including the power steering rack, power steering pump, power steering reservoir, lines, and cap. We also replaced several hoses in the CCV system, and lastly had the DME coded for the 330Xi with a performance tune from Kassel Performance. As it sits this a great E46 330Xi-swapped touring—a car that BMW should have built from the factory.
The Japanrot paint is in exceptional condition given the age and mileage of the chassis. The front hood, fenders, and ZHP bumper cover have been repainted and are a close match to the rest of the car, which appears to be original. There are a few typical small dings, scratches, and paint imperfections, but much less than most BMWs have at this chassis mileage. There is no rust (all of the typical E46 areas area clean) and the VIN tag is in place. All trim work is in place, but does have some UV fade. The windshield glass is BMW glass has been recently replaced and is crack and pitting-free. The side and rear window glass tinted. The halogen headlights don’t have self-leveling issues and the lenses are in good shape. The front marker lights, turn signals, and taillight lenses are all crack-free. The BMW Style 68 E46 M Sport Wheels (square not staggered) wheels are presentable, but do have paint imperfections and light curb rash. They are wearing fresh Kumho Ecsta PA51 tires.
The two-tone Camel and Black interior is in very good shape considering its age and miles. The BMW floor mats are in fair condition, but have protected the carpet beneath. The headliner does not sag, but the sunroof is INOP. The dashboard is good condition; there is a hairline crack in the upper left corner of the center vent surround (we may fix this before it sells). The fine wood trim is in above average shape with only a minor hairline crack in the center console piece. The piano black trim (which is now installed) has some light scratching in places. The seats have some typical creasing and bolster wear, with the worst being the driver’s seat outer bolsters. The driver’s backrest bolster also has a one-inch area of failed stitching. The fold-down rear seats are in excellent shape with headrests. The rear hatch area carpet in good condition and the cargo cover is present. The leather sport steering wheel leather is in excellent shape with no failed stitching. There are no failed pixels in the ZHP instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and there are no warning or check engine lights. The ZHP cluster has a tamper dot due to the miles (153,445 vs. the actually chassis mileage of 190,358 reported in February of this year). The ZHP also shows a sedan in lieu of a wagon for the car door display. The auto-dimming rear view mirror has no leaking fluid. The BMW Harmon Kardon HiFi sound system sounds great. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The final stage resistor functions correctly and blower motor is quiet. The center console ashtray cover is scratched, but this is common on E46s and easily replaced. The wood shift knob is in good nick, with no hairline cracks. The armrest leather is very nice, and the cup holder plastic has only minor paint peeing. The power windows, door locks, operate correctly; the sunroof is INOP. The door cards are tight and the window regulators are quiet.
This is a turn-key E46 wagon; it has no unresolved items that are common in so many swaps. The VANOS is quiet and the subframe shows no signs of cracking. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline. The throttle response is excellent thanks to the performance tune. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip. We prefer to drive it in Sport Mode, which takes full advantage of the extra power. The suspension firm yet compliant. There is some surface corrosion on the rear shocks, but it is superficial. The same is true for the brakes. The brakes are strong with lots of life left. It passes emissions, which we pay for in the State of Colorado. As it sits, this is a very nice example of a 330Xi-swapped E46 wagon. It will certainly need continued care and maintenance, and when that time comes, we can help. This is a turn-key E46 wagon; it has no unresolved items that are common in so many swaps.
