The E39 generation BMW 5 Series was borne from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 was significantly more refined than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW. A time before crossovers dominated the market, a time when you could still get a 5 Series wagon—and what a wagon it was! It could easily accommodate four adults in comfort and their gear in the massive cargo hold. Fold the seats down and I’ve seen everything from large toolboxes to a stand up bass hauled backed there. Yet, because it’s a BMW wagon its driver doesn’t have to sacrifice the sporty driving dynamics that defined BMW before it became a mass-market brand. 2001 and later model years are the best E39s, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 was the pinnacle 5 Series; every BMW generation before it was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been incrementally worse.
This Canadian Market 2002 Sterling Grey Metallic 525i Sport Wagon is a unicorn. It’s a 5-speed manual (most were automatics) with the sport package and piano black trim. It was originally spec’d with the more durable leatherette interior, but the front seats have been swapped out for leather sport seats giving you comfort in the front and utility in the back. The E39 525iT sport package includes the M leather steering wheel, sport seats, M shift knob, the sport self-leveling suspension, and shadowline trim. Xenon headlights and seventeen inch Style 5 wheels are another nice additions—and manual climate controls that will never break. Before coming to the US it lived in Calgary Alberta, were it was clearly properly owned, maintained, and spared use in harsh Canadian winters. I have detailed records going back through 2006 from the previous owner and a dealer summary of every service since it was originally sold. The records show yearly professional detailing, frequent oil changes and regular services. Notable maintenance includes the driver airbag being replaced under recall, thermostat and housing, front control arms and bushings, fuel pump, and front brakes. E39 5 Series wagons were good—very good. Finding one with a sport package and a manual gearbox is rare—very rare, much less one that doesn’t have a half a million miles on it. This E39 is one of those rare exceptions.
