The E46 generation M3 was the last of a legacy of normally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder M cars that defined the marque for a generation. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and at the time, it produced the highest horsepower-per-liter for a normally aspirated production engine. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis.
This 2002 Steel Grey M3 convertible is a one-owner car that came to us via Winslow BMW. The owner was an older gentleman who took delivery of it on December 31, 2001. He used it sparingly, but maintained it fastidiously having it serviced exclusively by Winslow BMW. The records show frequent services and inspections, including the S54 rod-bearing recall, which was complied with in May of 2003 at 8,400 miles. Other recalls like the DME re-programming and airbags have also been complied with, and the subframe has been routinely inspected. Dinan’s Stage Two suspension and short shift kit were added, along with 19-inch competition package wheels. In 2009 at 28,000 miles an Active Autowerke Stage 1.5 Supercharger was installed. Active Autowerke is proven platform for the S54 engine and the Stage 1.5 kit provides reliable forced induction that is conservative enough to be used with stock internals. An Active Autowerke intercooler, meth injection and exhaust compliment the kit. All modifications were dealer-installed by Winslow BMW. Active Autowerke reports the Stage 1.5 kit is good for close to 500 horsepower and after some seat time, I would put that as a conservative number. This M3 is fast—incredibly fast. But it has not lost the character BMW originally built it with. There is no lag, as is with a turbo, and it is tame in the lower rev range—it even gets better gas mileage too. Unleash full power and the world becomes your playground. Look beyond an easy $10K of performance bits and it is still an exceptionally clean, low mileage M3. No E46 issues are present; the rod bearing recall has been complied with, and the subframe mounts are intact. In preparation for sale we gave it a fresh Inspection II including an S54 valve adjustment, along with a high-pressure power steering line, and an intercooler boot. We also replaced the clutch, which felt like it was getting weak. It has always lived in Colorado, the Carfax is clean, and it has never been in an accident.
The Steel Grey Metallic paint is in excellent condition. It has clearly always lived indoors and been spared harsh weather and UV exposure. The only glaring imperfections are to the lower lip; there is moderate scraping on the bottom and some spidering in the paint near just above it, but it isn’t visible from normal angles. All panels appear to be original and the factory VIN placard is in place. There is no rust. All trim work is in place. The windshield is crack-free, but does have some pitting. The side windows are lightly tinted. The headlight lenses are crystal clear, as are the fog lights. The marker lights on the front bumper cover have been replaced with color-matched blanks. The rear tail light lenses are crack-free and look great. The Style 163 19-inch ZCP wheels are straight and true, with only tiny amounts of curb rash on the front wheels. They are wrapped in Continental Extreme Contact DW tires with 50% tread remaining.
The Grey leather interior is in excellent condition. The carpet has no stains or tears, sans one small area on the driver’s transmission tunnel. BMW M3 front floor mats are also included. The seats are in great shape, with no excessive wear; there is very slight wear on the driver’s side bolster. The steering wheel leather and M-colored stitching are in excellent shape. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and no warning or check engine lights. The auto-dimming rear view mirror has no leaking fluid. The convertible top headliner is perfect. The Harmon Kardon HiFi sound system sounds great, and the volume knob works correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower motor does not chirp, and the final stage resistor functions correctly. The center console ashtray cover is slightly scratched. The shift knob / boot, cup holder, and e-brake handle / boot are in great shape. All power windows, door locks, and the convertible top operate correctly. The door cards are tight and the window regulators are quiet. The removable air deflector is present. The trunk tool kit is complete (lug wrenches were not included with M3s because of the mobility kit). The owners’ manuals and two keys are included with the sale.
All preventative maintenance is up to date and all common E46 issues have either been addressed or are not present. All recent maintenance is outlined in the summary paragraph. The engine fires on command and pulls incredibly strong. On initial start up and on initial off throttle the idle occasionally hunts a few hundred RPM but it settles down shortly thereafter. There is slight supercharger whine, which is normal. The power is delivered in a linear and controllable fashion. There are no leaks, drips, or spots. The VANOS is quiet. The clutch was just replaced, it does not slip and the shifter is crisp and tight. The brakes are firm with lots of life remaining. The factory calipers have been painted blue. The Dinan S2 suspension is excellent; slightly lower than stock, yet astonishingly compliant—even on Colorado’s poor roads with 19-inch wheels mounted. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. The exhaust looks and sounds amazing. The records show the catalytic convertors being replaced in 2010 at 30K miles. The owner was mature and clearly never abused this car. Complete dealer records documenting all services are included with the car.
