The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was born from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before it was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been incrementally worse.
This Sterling Gray over Caramel Nappa leather M5 came to us on consignment from a fellow enthusiast—and it is a fantastic example! The color combo is one of the best for an E39 M5. In person it is striking and rare—you are not likely to run into another one just like it! It is the second to the last year of production and is in the sweet spot of mileage for E39 M5’s, where it is low enough to remain collectible, but high enough to be able to use and enjoy. It is properly optioned from the factory, plus it has some choice Dinan suspension modifications, a Euro single-piece armrest, and it sounds amazing with the Supersprint headers and muffler delete. The muffler delete is the single best modification you can do to an M5. It is loud enough to let the world know that this isn’t your grandma’s 5 Series, but quiet enough to keep everyday use civilized. There is thorough documentation detailing frequent maintenance throughout its life that is organized chronologically in a three-ring binder. Recent work includes pads and rotors, power steering pump and reservoir replacement, and a fresh battery. In preparation for sale it didn’t need much, a testament to proper care and ownership. We changed the cabin and engine air filters, changed the oil, and performed a brake fluid flush. As it sits, this M5 would make a great daily driver. It has enough miles to enjoy it regularly without guilt, but few enough that you will be very proud of it—earning compliments at every Cars and Coffee.
The Sterling Gray paint is in very good condition. The finish has no glaring defects and all panels are original with the exception of the front bumper. It was recently replaced due to a minor hit and looks fantastic; its replacement is documented in the records. Thanks to not being originally from Colorado, the front end has avoided any significant pitting or rock chips that Colorado Cars typically get. All trim is present and accounted for. The headlight and indicator lenses are clear and crack free. The Angel Eyes have no missing filaments and all bulbs work. The headlights are clear, but have some minor pitting. The fog lights are LED and protected by clear film. The windshield is crack-free with only minor pitting elsewhere. The Style 65 wheels bear the original Chrome Shadow finish are straight with no curb rash. The tires are staggered Michelin Pilot Super Sports with 50% tread remaining.
The interior is in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by all-weather floor mats. The seat leather is soft and supple to the touch. There is minor bolster wear and creasing on the front seats, but they are very nice for a caramel interior of this mileage. There is no seat twist. The dashboard leather is soft and there are no cracks. The steering wheel has minor wear. The instrument cluster LCD has some failed pixels in the odometer, but it is still easily legible. The navigation screen and HVAC displays have no failed pixels. The BMW Premium sound with DSP is fantastic. There are no check codes on the onboard computer and none of the check engine, DSC, or ABS warning lights are on. Both of the cup holders function properly. The tray underneath them is in nice shape. We replaced the factory armrest with a euro unit with the storage tray underneath. The one-piece leather shift knob and boot are in great shape. All power functions, seat motors, and seat heaters function properly. The door locks work as they should and the window regulators are quiet. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds.
There is a large stack of records that come with the sale, dating back to 2006. There are also printouts detailing dealer work since the car was new. There are no common E39 issues like leaking valve cover gaskets, noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, weeping differential output seals, or inoperative window regulators. The combination of the Supersprint headers, Active Autowerke intake, and software adds a notable increase in performance. As stated in the summary paragraph, this car has benefitted from fantastic stewardship in its lifetime. The S62 fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls very strongly to redline. There are no fluid leaks or drips. There are no SES lights or engine management codes indicating carbon build up (a redline a day keeps the carbon away!). The clutch has zero slip, the take-up is correct, and the E60 shifter is crisp. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The brakes have plenty of life left. Like any M5, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs, which we can help with when that time comes.
