There has been no more controversial Porsche 911 than the 996. It was the first water-cooled 911, the first complete redesign—not evolution—of a lineage that arcs back to 1963. It was also the 911 that saved Porsche from near collapse. Traditionalists (myself included) were appalled by its dramatic break in form, its runny egg headlights (inspired by the 911 GT1), its relatively cheap interior bits, and its reputation for intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) failure that can result in catastrophe. But time has been kind to the 996, and hindsight has shown that, perhaps, we were wrong. By the late 996 years (996.2 in Porsche-speak), Stuttgart had rectified those offensive headlights with eggs that were fried rather than runny, upped the interior build quality, and bumped engine displacement to 3.6 liters, good for 320 horsepower. The C4S was also added to the lineup, featuring the wide-body, brakes, and suspension from the 911 Turbo. The market has responded, too, with 996 values steadily rising from the bottom of the depreciation curve and a growing population of enthusiasts who embrace the unique headlights. In the current market frenzy, there are few better cars for the money than a 996—especially a wide-body 911 C4S!

Summary

This 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (C4S) Coupe is an incredibly unique example. By all outward appearances, it’s just a regular C4S, but under the rear bonnet is one of the best engines available for any 996—a custom, blue-printed Flat 6 Innovations 4.0-liter Stage I+ track performer engine. The build, outlined above, basically turns this C4S into an all-wheel drive 996 GT3 touring, remedying all of the typical M96 issues in the process. It is the ultimate sleeper!

It was originally delivered by Stevenson Imports in Littleton, Colorado, in March of 2002 and has physically lived in Colorado ever since despite being registered in Florida for a short stint. The previous owner (a PCA owner who we fond it through) purchased it in 2011 at roughly 19,000 miles and maintained it at Stevenson Imports, supported by a large stack of service records. The records show frequent and regular services, brake fluid flushes, and oil changes. Highlights of that maintenance included the intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) being done preventatively, along with the rear main seal at 27,772 miles in May of 2012 and the clutch being replaced at 38,179 miles in August of 2013. We sold it in 2021 for that owner to a Glen Shelly regular who had the engine built by Flat 6 Innovations. The process took over a year and was a significant expense.

The history is documented thoroughly. In 2013, it was involved in a low-speed rear-ending that required the replacement of the rear bumper cover, taillights, and other trim pieces. In 2014, it was also involved in a parking lot incident where another vehicle scraped the driver’s side door and left rear quarter panel. Detailed receipts for both repairs are included in the records binder, and neither incident caused any structural damage. We have included a paint gauge report in the records that confirms all paint is original except for the driver’s door and left rear quarter panel (gauging at 7-9 mils). As it sits, this is an excellent example of one of the best 911s available in the current market. It is the perfect single-mission 911 for Colorado, one that has been properly owned and properly cared for. We would like to find a new owner who will continue its stewardship pedigree for the next chapter of its story.

The Arctic Silver paint is in excellent condition and presents fantastically. There is a reason silver is one of the most popular 911 colors—it always looks great! The finish is brilliant, with notable defects other than slight rock chipping on the front bumper cover. All paint is original except for the driver’s door and left rear quarter panel; a paint gauge report is included in the records. All trim is present and in good shape, although the lower front lip does have some light scuffing. This could be replaced if desired. The headlight, indicator, and taillight lenses are brilliantly clear and crack-free, except for two small hairline cracks in the rear taillights. The windshield glass is free of cracks but has some pitting; the side and rear glass are tinted. The Sport Techno wheels are in excellent condition; we had them professionally refinished in the original color. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires are freshly mounted with virtually no miles.

Interior

The interior is also in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by Porsche floor mats. The seat leather is soft and there is no excessive bolster wear. The dashboard leather is soft, and there are no cracks. The steering wheel leather is fantastic. The instrument cluster, HVAC, and stereo displays have no failed pixels. The Becker Porsche CDR-220 stereo sound system sounds amazing, although there is some wear on the stereo face. There are no warning lights. All power functions, door locks, window switches, mirrors, and seat motors work correctly. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. There is some typical 996 scuffing on the driver’s doorsill; the hood and engine cover release switches function correctly. Two keys, the spare tire, the tool kit, and the owners’ manuals are all present.

Mechanical

 engine photo

Proper ownership is critical with any Porsche 911, and this one meets that requirement in spades with lots of detailed service records and thorough documentation of the engine build. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. There are no fluid leaks or drips. The clutch was replaced at 38K miles, and inspected when the engine was removed for the rebuild; it has zero slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp and precise. The driveline, transaxle, and wheel bearings are quiet, with no vibrations. The Turbo suspension and brakes are significant improvements over the regular 996. The suspension is firm yet compliant, and the brakes have plenty of life left. This is a turn-key 911 C4S and one of the best examples available in the country.
