The legendary first-generation Acura NSX spanned two decades from conception to the end of production and there have been few cars like it before or since. The NSX was born of an age when Honda was fanatical about quality and precision. It was born of an age when Honda engines powered Formula 1 cars and its drivers won Formula 1 championships, notably a certain Brazilian with the last name Senna. The NSX’s all aluminum monocoque construction was incredibly rigid, yet lightweight. Extensive aluminum componentry reduced unsprung weight and resulted in as-near-as-makes-no-difference to an overall weight of 3,000 pounds. Forged pistons and titanium connecting rods allowed a redline well north of 8,000 RPM out of a 3.0-liter V6 engine good for 270 horsepower. In 1997 power was increased twenty horsepower with a revised 3.2-liter engine and a better breathing exhaust. A close-ratio 6-speed transmission was also added. Then in 2002 the final changes were made with the flip-up headlights being replaced by fixed HID units, subtle body changes, and minor suspension and tire changes. 2003 model years got a larger 19mm rear sway bar. Special editions notwithstanding, these are the rarest NSXs, with only 838 produced from 2002 to 2005, and they command the highest premiums.
This Berlina Black over Onyx leather Acura NSX is 1 of only 18 examples produced in that color combination for the 2003 model year. In addition to the standard post-facelift and 2003 model year attributes outlined above, it features JIC Magic Rr coil-overs, bronze-colored stock wheels, an aftermarket NSX Type-R rear spoiler, and a modern touchscreen Pioneer stereo. The combination of Berlina Black with bronze wheels, slightly lower ride-height, and replica NSX Type-R rear spoiler make this NSX standout—it turns heads everywhere it goes. Inside, the original stereo has been replaced with a modern touchscreen Pioneer unit with Bluetooth and backup camera. The latter was important to the owner because he had small children and it greatly improves the NSX’s limited visibility when reversing. The original stereo and rear spoiler are included with the car, we have sourced an original center console trim piece so that the stereo and center console could be put back to stock.
This NSX was originally delivered by Open Road Acura of Wayne, New Jersey and remained with the first owner until 2007 and 13,900 miles after which it went to a second long-term owner in Virginia for the next twelve years. The current owner purchased it in 2019 with 27,300 miles and brought it to California. He completed a timing belt/water pump service, replaced the shifter and the battery, and installed the modern stereo. We are offering on consignment and brought it to Colorado. In preparation for sale, we had Acura NSX specialist Chris Wayland at Fisher Acura (formerly Flatirons Acura) in Boulder complete a pre-purchase inspection and oil service. Chris is one of the premier Acura NSX technicians in the country, having worked on the NSX since its inception. NSXs from around the country are routinely shipped to Chris for service before being shipped back to their owners. The inspection revealed no issues other than wiper blades and an oil service, which we completed. As it sits, it is an exceptional NSX. We are proud to offer it for sale and would like to find a new owner who will continue its legacy for the next chapter of its life.
The Berlina Black Metallic paint is in excellent condition. The finish is glossy and brilliant, with only very minor imperfections. All paint gauges at between 4 and 5 mils, with a few areas of 6 mils and all panel gaps are correct. There are no glaring dents or dings and no clear coat lifting. The front bumper cover does have minor pitting, and some slight scuffing on the lower lip due to the inherently low ride height, but neither is conspicuous from normal viewing angles. There are several small scratches, one on the targa panel and one on the left rear quarter panel. There are several very small cracks in the paint near the wing mounting position, the passenger side ones are covered with touch-up paint. All trim and the 2002 post-facelift black mesh are present and in excellent condition. Other than the small scratch, the removable targa top has no “hangar rash” from storage. The windshield glass is crack-free with only minor pitting and two small chips. The headlight, indicator and taillight lenses are clear and crack free, although there is mild condensation in the center portion of the taillights (a common issue). The post-facelift alloy wheels are true and straight with zero curb rash. The Dunlop Direzza ZII tires have 2014 DOT dates with good tread remaining.
Open the door and you are greeted with that lovely Acura leather smell. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The interior lights have been replaced with red LED footwell lights and white LED dome lights. The seat leather is excellent with virtually no bolster wear. The dashboard leather is perfect and features the white stitching unique to 2002 post-facelift cars. The steering wheel and shifter leather are likewise fantastic. All instrument cluster gauges work correctly and there are no check engine or warning lights. The Pioneer stereo is a nice update and sounds great, the aluminum trim has been modified and painted to accommodate it. The match isn’t perfect with the OEM trim and we have sourced a set of OEM trim if retrofitting the OEM stereo is desired. The power door locks, window switches and mirror switches work correctly. The climate control module functions correctly; heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The spare tire, tool kit, and owners’ manuals are present, along with two keys.
There are few driving experiences that can match a proper low-mileage NSX, and this example is no exception. The C32B engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. When parked, there are no oil leaks or drips. Records from the current owners’ tenure shows regular oil changes and a timing belt and water pump service done in 2019 at 27K miles. The clutch has zero slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp. The driveline and wheel bearings are quiet and there are no vibrations. The JIC Magic Rr coilovers have a perfect ride height. The ride is athletic, but still compliant; 2003 NSXs benefit from the wider track of the 2002 post-facelift and a larger rear sway bar. The brake pedal is firm, and the brakes have plenty of pad life and rotor run out remaining. At As it sits, this is a turn-key NSX ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country. We would like to find a buyer who will continue to care for it and appreciate it for years to come.
