The Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (G-Wagon) is beloved for its bank vault feel, commanding driving position, and effortless capability over all manner of terrain. The G-Wagen’s roots harken back to a 20,000 military truck order from the Shah of Iran in the 1970s. Nicknamed “The Wolf,” Mercedes-Benz teamed up with Steyr-Daimler-Puch, its military production partner known for building vehicles like the Pinzgauer, to produce what would become the Gelandewagen. By the mid-1980s, the G-Class was born, thanks to leather interiors from Mercedes civilian cars and luxury features like an automatic transmission and air conditioning. In 1990, the G-Class was updated to the W463 chassis code, and the styling remained largely unchanged for next thirty years—a testament to the staying power of a functional design and big V8 engines. The modern G-Class is known for mixing an old-school feel with unparalleled luxury. Yet, the G-Wagon remains a jack of all trades, with stout off-road capabilities and a mechanical heft to its road manners with a solid, hushed feel to the way it conquers everything from dirt roads to date nights.
This 2003 Mercedes-Benz G500 finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic over Black leather is a prime example of what makes these timeless vehicles so desirable. It features a bespoke leather interior largely borrowed from the contemporary S-Class, including contoured leather heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Other factory options include locking front and rear differentials and transfer case, and four-wheel drive with high and low settings. Other factory options are the Exclusive Package, headlight washers, illuminated door sills, and a host of other amenities. Tasteful upgrades include 275/70/18 BF Goodrich K02 all-terrain tires, an updated tire carrier with locking tool compartment, deleted side steps (they are included), and a modern Sony head unit with Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio.
This G500 is a longtime California car that recently moved to Colorado and presents like a freshly off-lease example from a decade ago. The silver paint shines with uniform paint depth on all body panels and the interior presents with minimal wear and the smell of a Mercedes-Benz from the marque’s heyday. The Carfax reflects frequent maintenance at Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Southern California and notes that the car was Certified by Mercedes after its first owner. This is supported by thorough maintenance records that come with the vehicle. There are no accidents or damages reported by Carfax and this reflects in the overall condition of this vehicle. In preparation for sale, we replaced the valve cover gaskets and the differential seals. Other significant recent maintenance includes a transmission service, steering drag link and outer tie rods, and brake pads and a brake fluid flush. Two keys, a Mercedes-Benz first aid kit, the stock side steps, tire cover, and a car cover are included with the sale. The condition is exceptional for its age and miles, and this example would be equally at home entering daily driver duty or serving as a special weekend vehicle for trips downtown or way off the grid.
Brilliant silver metallic is a classic Mercedes-Benz color and this G500 is a shining example of why. The paint gauge reads between 3.5 and 5.5 on all panels, indicating no signs of paint work. There is slight UV yellowing on the protective film on the rear fenders and there are minor rock chips on the front bumper and leading edge of the protruding door handles. In our opinion, this only adds to the timeless, utilitarian charm of this vehicle. There is one minor ding on the top right of the trunk door and a clear coat scuff on the right rear corner of the back bumper. The headlights have exceptionally clear glass and minor pitting, while the taillights could easily be on a G-Wagen sold this year. The wheels are in great shape with slight signs of tire lever rash on one wheel and two coin-sized clear coat chips in another. The windshield features a circular compression chip just below the driver’s primary line of sight, we can replace this at the buyer’s discretion. Overall, this 2003 G500 is a fine example of the model and wears its age gracefully. With minimal work, it could be brought to garage queen status, though we think a handful of minor signs of use are an invitation to drive this rolling bank vault for another two decades without reservation.
The interior is in extremely good condition. The view from the driver’s seat is unrivaled in the modern era. You can see the top marker lights on both fenders and the distinctive triangular hood pointing straight ahead. The interior smells like only a classic Mercedes-Benz can smell, the headliner is tight and free of stains or tears. The instrument panel is crisp and clear and all wipers, blinkers, and information menus function as-intended. The headlight switch can be occasionally finicky, but it is liveable. The door cards present extremely well with no scuffs or delamination. The driver’s side door card has one possibly loose clip on the bottom end but it does not rattle or affect functionality. All seat functions work as-intended including the driver’s memory settings. The driver’s seat bottom tilts slightly under braking and acceleration. The leather on all five seats is in exceptional condition, with smoothness and richness similar to showroom condition. The front and rear seats are heated and all seat heaters work quickly. All power windows function smoothly and quickly including the one-touch down feature. The air conditioning blows cold and the heat blows hot, with the large naturally-aspirated V8 powering the climate control quickly and quietly. There are minor ring marks on the wood trim clear coat on the steering wheel and faint scratches on the wood shifter surrounds. There is minor soft plastic wear on the knurled A/C control knobs. All door sills and floor mats are in great condition, and the right rear door sill scuff plate presents minor looseness when tested. The aftermarket head unit functions flawlessly and the factory speakers offer crisp sound staging in the hushed cabin. The owner’s manual and both keys are included with the truck.
This G500 is a turn-key example; all major and preventative maintenance is up to date. It accelerates and shifts smoothly, moves down the road as quietly as we’ve ever heard for a vehicle on BFG K02s. As part of our sale preparations, we replaced the valve cover gaskets and differential seals, the latter is important because it prevents the differential gear oil from intruding into the wheel bearings. Other significant recent maintenance includes a transmission service, steering drag link and outer tie rods, and brake pads and a brake fluid flush. The M113 E30 engine fires on command and pulls strongly with buttery torque. The transmission shift smoothly and does not slip; all locking functions work as they should, as do the high and low 4x4 modes. The suspension is wonderfully compliant and offers a class-leading ride for its off-road capabilities. The brakes are firm with plenty of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. We pay for and ensure it passes emissions in the State of Colorado. As it sits, this is a fine example of a G wagon ready to be enjoyed and used by its new owner.
