The BMW E46 generation 3 Series is what many BMW-philes consider to be the last of the true driver’s 3 Series. The E46 occurred near the end of the sweet spot of BMW’s technological evolution, where power, weight, size, and simplicity all wonderfully intersected. It was the last 3 Series before BMW shifted from a driver-focused brand to a technology-focused brand. It came from an era where a base-model 3 Series could satisfy the discerning tastes of the driving enthusiast and was the first 3 Series since the E30 offered with all-wheel drive. Yet, the E46 offers plenty of amenities (subtle lighting illuminating the center console from above is my favorite). Many examples have depreciated into the price point of entry-level buyers and neglect, while clean, low-mileage, well-cared-for examples have become rare—very rare.
This 2004 Titanium Silver Metallic over Black leather BMW 330Ci Convertible is an excellent driver-quality example. Its condition is far above average compared to the typical E46, and it is properly outfitted, including Brushed Aluminum trim and the optional factory hard-top. Other amenities include the Sport Package, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, Harmon Kardon Premium Sound, Adaptive xenon headlights, and Style 68 Sport wheels. It was originally delivered in April of 2004 by Patrick Cars BMW in Illinois and remained there under one owner until being sold to the previous owner in late 2010 at just over 62,000 miles. The previous owner split their time, spending winters in Florida and summers in Illinois and Colorado, moving the car here permanently in 2019. It was always a second vehicle, which has maintained the condition and kept the miles down. The car has an extensive and well-archived maintenance history. In preparation for sale, we replaced the oil pan gasket, front control arms, cabin and engine air filters, and an oil service. The Carfax is clean, and it has never been in an accident. As it sits, it is an outstanding example of one of the best BMWs made, an E46 330Ci convertible. Plus, it has the factory hard top, including the stand and cover. We’d like to find a new owner who will appreciate it and enjoy it for the next chapter of its story.
The Titanium Silver Metallic paint is in good condition. It presents very well, but close scrutiny does reveal many flaws that the color silver can mask well. There are several scratches on the trunk and a scuff in the middle of the hardtop. There are a few noticeable chips to the paint on the passenger-side fender and door. There are also a few small chips dispersed throughout the hood as well as the usual pitting to the front. The rear bumper has 2 noticeable dents, but the front bumper has spider cracking to both corners, scuffing underneath, light pitting, and some paint peeling around the bottom. The only notable rust on the car is in both door sills close to the drains. All VIN and factory stickers are present and legible. There are no panel gap inconsistencies. All glass is clean and clear, with only a single, very small pit on the windshield. The paint-matched trim along the sides of the car has some paint peel and scratching, the side markers are also very faded, but all other trim is present and in good condition. The convertible hardtop is in excellent condition besides a light scuff. The headlights are fully functional and with no lens yellowing. The taillights and indicators are fully functional and in great condition. All four 17-inch wheels have curb rash, though not serious and are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS tires with 9/32” tread depth in front and 7/32” in back. They measure 225/45 with 2015 DOT dates in the front, and 245/40 with 2012 DOT dates in the rear. There is plenty of tread left, but they could be replaced in the not-so-distant future due to age.
The interior is consistent with the exterior. There are no stains or foul odors, and it has never been smoked in. The convertible top headliner is in great condition. The door cards are in decent shape but the driver door handle has many pits and scratches, while the passenger door handle has less. The steering wheel has a lot of wear all around the leather and to the black plastic on the spokes, though the horn button is in good shape. The rest of the steering column is also fully functional and in good condition. The dashboard is crack-free, and the instrument cluster is fully functional. All interior lights and switches are functional and undamaged. All power windows/locks function normally, and all switches are unfaded. Climate control blows hot or cold when required. The stereo system sounds great. The center console does have some typical E46 wear, with the cup holders being the worst. The front seats have a lot of creasing and wear, with the worst being on the driver’s seat. The rear seats are in near-perfect condition All seat functions, including the seat heaters, work. The trunk is unstained, has no odors, and the toolkit is mostly complete. The factory wind deflector is present, which makes things much more livable with the top down.
As it sits, this is a turn-key 330Ci convertible. It drives and feels very much like the day it came off the showroom floor, an increasing rarity as the E46 generation has aged into the two-decade realm. No common E46 issues are present; the subframe is intact and shows no signs of failure. The M54 engine fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It doesn’t spot or leak. The cooling system isn’t weeping, and neither are the power steering lines. The transmission shifts smoothly and does not slip. There are no service engine soon, ABS or DSC lights. The suspension is compliant and there are no clunks, rattles, or other abnormal drive-train noises. The brakes are firm with plenty of life left. It passes Colorado emissions with no problems, which we pay for if it remains in the State of Colorado. It will certainly need continued care and maintenance, and it deserves it, but as it sits it is an excellent example of a late-model E46.
