The E46 generation M3 was the last of a legacy of normally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder M cars that defined the marque. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and, at the time, it produced the highest horsepower per liter for a normally aspirated production engine. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis. The M3 also got exclusive suspension, brakes, and wheels that gave it formidable performance. Even today, a well-driven E46 M3 can hold its own against much more powerful and modern performance cars. The 2001, 2002, and early 2003 model years had a rod bearing recall that was remedied by mid-2003. The SI B covering this was extended into June of 2003 build dates. A mid-lifecycle update starting with March of 2003 (2003.5) model years included several new features, the most notable being LED taillights.
This 2005 Titanium Silver Metallic (TiAg) over Black leather M3 is a fantastic example and wonderful entry point into the E46 M3 market. In Titanium Silver over Black leather it always looks good. In addition to a proper 6-speed manual, it also features Harmon Kardon Premium Sound, BMW Navigation, the Cold Weather and Premium Packages, collapsible convertible top compartment for more trunk storage with the top up, and 19-inch wheels. 2005 was the second to last year of E46 M3 production; hence it has all of the post-life-cycle updates and updated rod bearings. Convertible M3s also didn’t suffer rear subframe failure mounting point failure thanks to the stronger convertible construction. At less than 86K miles it is in sweet spot of the M3 market, with plenty of life left, but not commanding the premium that lower-mileage M3s have thanks to significant appreciation. This example has spent the majority of its life in North Carolina, Texas, and Colorado. In preparation for sale we gave it an S54 valve adjustment, re-charged the air conditioning system, replaced the headlight bulbs, and gave it a fresh oil change with Blackstone oil analysis. Other recent maintenance includes the engine and cabin air filters, brake fluid flush, transmission and differential fluid, water pump, thermostat, and the driveshaft flex disc. Overall it is in very good condition (detailed below), and will bring smiles to its new owner. The Carfax is clean, the optional rear wind deflector and storage case, an all-weather car cover, all owners’ manuals, and two keys are included in the sale.
Titanium Silver Metallic is a great color; it always looks fantastic, regardless of the lighting conditions. The paint on this example is original and in good condition. All body panels are original and the factory VIN tag and stamps are in place. There is no rust. The front bumper and leading edge of the hood have some rock chips. The front bumper cover has some spider cracks in the paint and light scuffs. The convertible top is in very good condition with only light wear in the folding spots. The rear subframe was inspected and shows no signs of failure. All trim work is in place. The windshield has no cracks, only some minor pitting. The side and rear glass is excellent. The headlight lenses are clear and crack-free, as are the fog lights. Both have some pitting. All remaining light lenses are crack-free and the LED taillights look great. The Style 67 19-inch wheels are straight and true, but do have some curb rash. The rears tires are nearing the wear bars and the fronts are at 40%.
The Black Leather interior is in very good shape, being the most durable interior option for E46’s. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet has no stains or tears and has been protected by factory BMW floor mats, which are in good condition. The seats have no failed stitching or tears; both have moderate bolster creasing. All power seat functions work, as do the seat heaters. The rear seats are in great shape. The M leather steering wheel is clean with only minor wear. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and warning or check engine lights. There is a hairline crack in the center dashboard vent. The auto-dimming rear view mirror functions and has not leaked any fluid. The convertible top does not sag. The Harman Kardon premium sound system sounds great, and the navigation screen is clean. The heat blows warm and the A/C blows cold, thanks to a recent recharge. The blower motor does not chirp, and the final stage resistor functions correctly (common issues). The center console is decent; there are some scratches on the cup holder and some wear on the center armrest. The shift knob and boot are nice. All power windows, door locks, and convertible top operate correctly. The door cards are not pulling apart, but the handles do have some scratches. The factory wind deflector and storage bag are present, along with a car cover. Two keys and all factory manuals are included with the sale.
This is a turn-key E46 M3 with up-to-date maintenance. In preparation for sale we performed an S54 valve adjustment, along with the other items mentioned in the summary paragraph. Being a 2005 model year, it received the updated rod bearings from the factory and the Blackstone oil analysis showed no signs of poor rod bearing health. The S54 engine fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline (once the oil is warmed up, of course). It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS is quiet. The clutch take-up is smooth and the shifter is tight. The brakes are firm, the suspension is compliant, and there are no driveline or wheel bearing vibrations or whine. The power convertible top functions correctly. As it sits, this is a turn-key E46 M3; I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across country.
The color combo, condition, and options make this E46 M3 an outlier example. We would like to find a new owner who will appreciate and care for it as it has been, and enjoy it for years to come.
