The world is a better place thanks to the 997 Porsche 911—at least the world of those who care about Porsche 911s. The 997 was Porsche’s reconciliation for the dramatic departure that it made with the 996 911. When the air-cooled age ended with the legendary 993, its successor the 996 had herculean shoes to fill. When it lacked the personality of the air-cooled (and how could it not have), it stoked fears that Porsche had lost its way. It wasn’t that the 996 was bad (in fact it was excellent), we just weren’t ready for the change that it brought. The 997 put those fears to rest, and in the eyes of many, steered the 911 ship back on course. The 997 featured refined, yet classic styling, better materials and build quality, and proper headlights. As time has marched on, the 997 has become the sweet spot of the water-cooled 911-era striking a wonderful balance of modern amenities without compromising the proper 911 driving experience.
This GT Silver Metallic over Cocoa Special Leather 2005 997.1 911 Carrera S is a fantastic entry into the 997 market. GT Silver Metallic over the dark-brown Cocoa leather is the defining characteristic of this Carrera S—one that stands out from the myriad of normal black and tan interiors. Other factory options consist of the Sport Chrono Package Plus, Bose Surround Sound, Soft Look leather, Carrera Classic wheels and a host of other amenities. Yet, the best part about this 911 Carrera S are its 103,000 miles. Having six figures on the odometer has allowed its price to remain reasonable within a market that has gone absolutely stratospheric (if only we had just kept every 997 we sold over the last year). Thanks to only two owners who have maintained it to exceptionally high standards, this 911 wears its miles with pride—you’ll brag about them when complimented by on-lookers at the gas station. The records go back to 2012 with the majority of the work being done by Porsche specialists Swiss Motors in Manhattan Beach, CA. Significant maintenance includes replacement the clutch and flywheel, PCV valve, brakes and tires, cooing system overhaul, and an air conditioning system refresh. We do not have a record of the IMS being done; but were told by the owner of Swiss Motors that it is a dual row IMS, which requires splitting the engine case. According to LN solutions the dual row IMS has a 1% failure rate. The Carfax is clean, and the maintenance records go back for the last ten years. The cosmetic condition inside and out does show some typical 997 flaws, but overall, it is a very presentable example. As it sits, this 911 Carrera S offers an opportunity for 997 ownership in a market that has appreciated beyond budget or reason for many.
The exterior condition of this 911 Carrera S is very nice, presenting as a great driver quality car with just the right amount of wear to invite thousands of guilt-free miles. The front bumper presents with no rock chips thanks to a recent respray, while the hood shows a handful of chips and pitting commensurate with original paint on a Southern California car. The front under tray shows signs of wear but remains fully intact. There are a handful of wear marks in the usual places including around door handles and fender edges. The rear bumper has a few light scrapes and paint chips, which only add to this car’s driver character. The headlights have a slight UV haze and only have minor pitting. The front turn signals have moderate pitting but are clear and crack-free. The taillights are clear with no cracks. The window trim is faded from the Southern California sun, while all other trim is clear and good. The wheels are in good shape, with the most noticeable curbing on the passenger rear wheel. The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport4S in 235/35ZR19 front and 295/30ZR19 rear, presenting late 2017 and early 2018 DOT dates with over 50% tread remaining.
The Cocoa soft look leather interior is in supple, patina-ed condition. The softer leather and cocoa color wear differently than the typical black interiors on these cars, presenting a look more reminiscent of the earlier air-cooled cars as time wears on the richly-colored leather. When you open the door, you are greeted with nothing but the smell of fine leather. The 997’s improved build quality over the 996 is clearly evident. The driver’s seat presents light creasing, though the soft leather is largely resistant to wear that plagues lower-quality materials. The passenger seat is in similarly good shape, with slight creasing and wear visible on the seat bottom. The rear seats are in very good shape with only minimal signs of use. The rubber door seals are soft and seal quietly. The carpet is clean and free of stains or tears; factory floor mats have protected it. It has never been smoked in and there are no odors. All interior functions, options, power accessories, and controls work correctly. The multimedia screen and instrument cluster have no blown out pixels. The front trunk carpet is clean. The steering wheel is in good condition with some patina and scratches between 10 and 2 and slight wear on the painted spokes. The driver’s side cup holder does have a crack in the bottom of the cup holder. The left and right adjustment of the center vent is INOP. There is visible patina and wear on most control switches and knobs as well as patina and marking around the shift boot and center console. The cocoa brown plastics display wear differently than other interior colors, which is worth noting. Two keys and all factory manuals are included.
This 911 has clearly been well taken care of throughout its life; our inspection only found that it needed the oil pressure sender replaced. The records are thorough and detail frequent services. Our independent Porsche specialist gave it a clean bill of health on our arrival inspection. The car starts on command, idles smoothly, pulls very strongly to redline (once the oil temp is warmed up, of course). There are no warning lights. It has no leaks or seeps. The clutch take-up is correct and does not slip. The shifter is tight and precise. The brakes are wonderful, there is a receipt showing replacement in the recent past. The suspension bushings are tight and the suspension strikes a wonderful balance between compliance and sport. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. We look forward to finding a new owner who will enjoy and care for it for years to come.
