The E46 generation M3 was the last of a legacy of normally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder M cars that defined the marque for a generation. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and, at the time, it produced the highest horsepower-per-liter for a normally aspirated production engine. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis. The best M3s were equipped with the Performance Package (ZCP), offered only for the final two years of production. For $4000, the ZCP got you exclusive 19” Style 163 wheels, slightly firmer spring rates, a tighter steering ratio, bigger brakes, and an M Track Mode tuned Dynamic Stability Control button on an Alcantara steering wheel. Interlagos Blue was an exclusive ZCP color, along with aluminum cube trim. The ZCP results in a sum greater than its parts, making the E46 M3 significantly more potent in the right hands than the regular E46 M3.
This 2006 Interlagos Blue over M cloth and leather slicktop ZCP M3 is one of just 12 examples built for the US market. E46 M3s don’t get much more rare or desirable than this one. Interlagos Blue was a ZCP-only color and is striking over the style 163 wheels, and complements the M Cloth interior fantastically. With only 65K miles on the odometer, it’s relatively now mileage, too. It was ordered to spec and delivered to its original owner in Florida on June 23 2006. Then, in March of 2007 it came to Colorado and has largely remained here ever since. The previous owner had a winter residence in Arizona where it avoided Colorado winters. He reported it was always dealer serviced, the majority of which being done at CO’s BMW in Loveland. He was reluctant to include his records with the car, but the most recent Inspection II invoice is included. It shows the S54 valve adjustment, along with fresh transmission and differential fluid and the compliance with the DME and passenger side airbag recalls. We had the driver side airbag recall completed in preparation for sale. The Carfax is clean and shows regular registrations and I have a sterilized dealer printout of all recall compliance. There was a small 2”-ding below the left rear tail light that we had repaired, I have pictures of before and after. We gave it our own inspection in preparation for sale and found no issues or “E46-isms.” The subframe mounts are crack-free and the VANOS is quiet. BMW M3 floor mats are included, along with two keys, all owners’ manuals, and the original window sticker.
The Interlagos Blue Metallic paint is in excellent condition. It has clearly always lived indoors and been spared harsh weather and UV exposure. There are no glaring imperfections and the leading edges and door lowers are protected by clear bra. Close examination reveals minor scuffing on the lower front splitter, two small dings behind the passenger side door and another on the roof. All panels appear to be original and the factory VIN placard is in place. There is no rust. All trim work is in place. The windshield is crack-free with only minor pitting. The headlight lenses are crystal clear and protected by clear bra. The fog light lenses are crack-free. The LED rear tail light lenses are crack-free and look great! The Style 163 19-inch ZCP wheels are straight and true with minor curb rash. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 all-season tires that are worn evenly with lots of tread remaining. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3s are a game-changer. I mounted a set of these tires on my wife’s M3 and set a faster dry lap time on them than my well used, but still sticky R1s!
The M Texture Anthracite Alcantara / Leather Interior Black leather is in excellent condition. The carpet has no stains or tears and is protected by BMW M3 front floor mats. The seats are in great shape, with no excessive wear on the leather or cloth. Even the driver’s side bolster has minimal wear. The rear seats are the desirable fold-down type. There is some minor damage to the left rear seat bottom cushion cloth. The Alcantara M steering wheel is in good shape with only minor wear. We were able to rejuvenate it more after the pictures were taken. There is no failed M-colored stitching. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and no warning or check engine lights. The auto-dimming rear view mirror has no leaking fluid. The headliner does not sag. The BMW Harmon Kardon HiFi sound system sounds great. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower motor does not chirp, and the final stage resistor functions correctly (common issues). The center console storage compartment and ashtray covers are not scratched (another common issue). The ZHP shift knob is perfect and the Alcantara E-brake handle is not worn. There is minor wear on the cup holder. All power windows, door locks, and the sunroof operate correctly. The door cards are tight and the window regulators are quiet. The trunk tool kit is complete (lug wrenches were not included with M3s because of the mobility kit). There is very faint smoke odor from early in the car’s life, but it has been treated. It is faint at best, even when I’ve let it sit in the sun and definitely not the smell of a car that has been regularly smoked in. I’ve taken a poll and there is no consensus, but most people including myself don’t think it smells like cigarettes. Cloves or cigars, perhaps? It is not offensive, even after spending an entire day in the car and I have the nose of a bloodhound.
All preventative maintenance is up to date and all common issues have either been addressed or are not present. The last S54 valve adjustment was done at 63,500 miles, along with the most recent oil change and the transmission and differential fluids. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS is quiet. The clutch take up is correct and the shifter is crisp. The ZCP brakes are noticeably better than the regular E46 M3 brakes with lots of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. The suspension is taut and compliant and the ZCP steering rack is fantastic. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. It does not appear to have been abused or tracked, but performance driving instruction and coaching are available through us if desired. There is no more potent weapon for the money than an E46 M3—especially a slicktop ZCP!
