The E46 generation M3 was the last of a legacy of normally aspirated, inline 6-cylinder M cars that defined the marque for a generation. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and, at the time, it produced the highest horsepower-per-liter for a normally aspirated production engine. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis. The best M3s were equipped with the Performance Package (ZCP), offered only for the final two years of production. For $4000, the ZCP got you exclusive 19” Style 163 wheels, slightly firmer spring rates, a tighter steering ratio, bigger brakes, and an M Track Mode tuned Dynamic Stability Control button on an Alcantara steering wheel. Interlagos Blue was an exclusive ZCP color, along with aluminum cube trim. The ZCP trim results in a sum greater than its parts, making the E46 M3 significantly more potent in the right hands than the regular E46 M3.

This 2006 Interlagos Blue slicktop ZCP M3 is one the most desirable E46 M3s there is. Interlagos Blue was a ZCP-only color and is striking over the Competition Style 163 wheels. With only 74K miles on the odometer, it’s relatively now mileage, too. It was ordered to spec and delivered to its original Colorado owner by Murray BMW in March of 2006. We are selling on consignment for the current owner, who purchased it in February 2011 with only 14,756 miles. The current owner is a skilled BMW mechanic and collector (he also owns more than a few E30 M3s) who has cared for and maintained this M3 properly. He tastefully modified it with Bimmerworld under drive pulleys, Fabspeed headers, Vibrant high-flow cats, and a Megan Racing exhaust. A Mac Autosport tune ties all of those mods together, seeing a hair over 300 horsepower at the rear wheels. The S54 screams through this exhaust setup—every S54 should sound this way. All ZCP components are intact, with the exception of TC Kline Double Adjustable coilovers in place of the OEM shocks and springs. The OEM suspension is included. It has always had regular oil changes and services. Both owners were meticulous stewards; a 2-inch binder is included with the sale, providing years of maintenance logs, receipts, and invoices. In preparation for sale it received a fresh oil change, engine and cabin air filters, an S54 valve adjustment, VANOS control line, accessory belts and pulleys (as needed), differential fluid flush, and preventative replacement of the SMG solenoid. It was also given a pre-purchase inspection by an independent BMW specialist, including inspection of the subframe mounts. It has always lived in Colorado, the Carfax is clean, and it has no “E46-isms.” The Carfax labels it as a one owner in the header, but shows the second owner’s purchase in the outline.

A quick drive behind the wheel, and it is clearly evident that this is not a normal M3. The ZCP upgrades are notable improvements over a regular E46 M3, but the Mac Autosport Tune, free-flowing exhaust, and TC Kline Suspension vastly improve this ZCP without compromising its original DNA. I have the strong opinion that the SMG II suits this build perfectly, and after only a short time behind the wheel it is clear why BMW only equipped the CSL with this gearbox. Come spend 20 minutes in the seat and you will agree with me! I reckon that I could run the same lap time on aggressive street tires as I do in my TT prepped S54 M Coupe on R Comps in this M3, due in part to the SMG II.

The Interlagos Blue Metallic paint is in excellent condition. It has clearly always lived indoors and been spared harsh weather and UV exposure. There are no glaring imperfections, and the hood and bumper cover are protected by clear bra. Close examination reveals minor scuffing on the lower lip, light pitting in the side skirts, and a small crack in the right front splitter. The crack could be fixed from behind if desired. All panels appear to be original and the factory VIN placard is in place. There is no rust. All trim work is in place. The windshield is crack-free, but does have some pitting. The headlight lenses are crystal clear and protected by clear bra. We replaced the fog lights and brackets with new units that are crystal clear. The marker lights on the front bumper cover have been replaced with color-matched blanks. The LED rear tail light lenses are crack-free and look great! The Style 163 19-inch ZCP wheels are straight and true with no curb rash; they do have small imperfections and some minor brake dust pitting. They are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 high performance tires with lots of tread remaining.

The Grey leather / Aluminum Cube trim interior is in excellent condition. The carpet has no stains or tears and is protected by BMW M3 front floor mats. A second set of all-weather BMW front floor mats is also included. The seats are in great shape, with no excessive wear; there is very slight wear on the driver’s side bolster. The rear seats are the desirable fold-down type. The Alcantara M steering wheel is in good shape with only minor wear. There is no failed M-colored stitching. There are no failed pixels in the instrument cluster, radio, or HVAC panel, and no warning or check engine lights. The auto-dimming rear view mirror has no leaking fluid. The headliner does not sag. The BMW Professional HiFi sound system sounds great. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The blower motor does not chirp, and the final stage resistor functions correctly (common issues). The center console storage compartment and ashtray covers are not scratched (another common issue). The SMG shift knob surround has some light scuffs, but the cup holders are clean, and the Alcantara E-brake handle is not worn. All power windows, door locks, and the sunroof operate correctly. The door cards are tight and the window regulators are quiet. The trunk tool kit is complete (lug wrenches were not included with M3s because of the mobility kit). We replaced the trunk floor carpet and side trim pieces. All owners manuals and two keys are included with the sale.

All preventative maintenance is up to date and all common issues have either been addressed or are not present. The S54 valve adjustment was just completed, along with a major service. The engine fires on command, idles smoothly and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak, drip, or spot. The VANOS is quiet. The SMG II functions correctly and throws no codes. The SMG relay was replaced preventatively last year. The clutch does not slip. The ZCP brakes are noticeably better than the regular E46 M3 brakes with lots of pad life and rotor run-out remaining. Various brake pads are included with the sale from stock compounds to Hawk HT-10s. The TC Kline double adjustable suspension is excellent—I run the same setup on my S54-powered M Coupe. The ZCP steering rack is communicative and direct. There is no driveline or wheel bearing vibration or whine. Both owners were mature and experienced performance drivers. Based on the records, I estimate it has seen about a dozen track days. It was maintained accordingly. There is no more potent weapon for the money than an E46 M3—especially this one. Performance driving instruction is available through us if you want to take your skills to the next level!
