The world is a better place thanks to the 997 Porsche 911—at least the world of those who care about Porsche 911s. The 997 was Porsche’s reconciliation for the dramatic departure that it made with the 996 911. When the air-cooled age ended with the legendary 993, its successor the 996 had herculean shoes to fill. When it lacked the personality of the air-cooled (and how could it not have), it stoked fears that Porsche had lost its way. It wasn’t that the 996 was bad (in fact it was excellent), we just weren’t ready for the change that it brought. The 997 put those fears to rest, and in the eyes of many, steered the 911 ship back on course. The 997 featured refined, yet classic styling, better materials and build quality, and proper headlights. As time has marched on, the 997 has become the sweet spot of the water-cooled 911-era striking a wonderful balance of modern amenities without compromising the proper 911 driving experience.
This Basalt Black Metallic over Black Standard Leather 2006 Porsche 997.1 911 Carrera S is an excellent example. Basalt Black was a premium color in the 997 color pallet, it is a dynamic hue that changes based on the ambient the light. This is a highly-optioned example with the Sport Chrono Package Plus, Bose Surround Sound, sport shifter, silver seat belts, and Carrera S “Lobster Claw” wheels. It remains as originally optioned with the exception of a Fabspeed Cold Air kit and an AWE Performance exhaust, a $3K upgrade. The condition and ownership history are exceptional, it presents like a car with a fraction of the 120,400 miles on the odometer. You will brag about those miles in response to compliments from onlookers at the gas station! Having six figures on the odometer has also allowed its price to remain reasonable within a market that has gone absolutely stratospheric.
It was originally delivered in Boca Raton, Florida in November of 2005 and remained there until moving to North Carolina in 2011 with 50K miles. It lived the remainder of its time in North Carolina under two subsequent owners until we brought it to Colorado. The Carfax shows regular services from day one with recent items being a recently replaced water pump, freshly mounted Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, fresh brake pads and rotors on each corner, and a four-wheel alignment. In preparation for sale, we did a regular service including an oil change, drive belt, spark plugs, engine air filter, and cabin air filter. Then we replaced the motor mounts, did a brake fluid flush, transmission fluid service, and replaced discolored volume knobs. 2006 and later 997s featured the dual-row IMS, which has a much lower incidence of failure than the earlier single-row IMS. As it sits, this 2006 911 Carrera S is a wonderful entry into the 997 market with a very well-optioned example in excellent condition.
The Basalt Black Metallic paint presents exceptionally well for the mileage, a testament to the care of previous owners. The paint gauges as original, at 3-4 mils on all panels, with the exception of the right front fender, which gauges at 6-8 mils. The paint match is perfect. Close scrutiny does reveal some imperfections in the paint in the form of small chips and scratches, the worst being two visible scratches under the passenger door handle and on the right rear quarter panel. There are typical rock chips and scratches on the lower front bumper cover, and age-related fade on the rear fender vinyl protection. The VIN sticker and other warning stickers are present, the hood sticker is included in the service booklet. All trim is present and accounted for; there is light UV fade on the front windshield cowling and mirror trim but it isn’t glaring. The headlights have similar age-related wear, but are presentable. The fog lights are in great shape, and likely have been replaced at some point. The taillight lenses are very nice as well. The windshield is crack-fee, but it does have a few small chips. The wheels have slight curb-rash, but they are very presentable. They are wrapped in fresh Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with 2019 DOT dates and over 70% tread remaining.
The Black Standard leather is very nice and has clearly been taken care of properly. There are no odors and it is has never been smoked in. The carpet does not have any rips or tears and the factory floor mats are presentable. There is typical 997 plastic wear on the center console trim and door switch surround panels. The passenger side door card leather does have slight discoloration. The dashboard is very nice and the cupholders function correctly. The multimedia screen and instrument cluster have no blown out pixels, and there are no warning lights. All interior functions, options, power accessories, and controls work correctly. The steering wheel does have some visible wear in the leather; the trim and airbag cover are nice. The shift knob also has some typical wear, along with the center console trim already mentioned. The seats are very nice, although there is typical bolster creasing with the worst being on the driver’s side outer bolster. The rear seats are in excellent shape, likely never being used. The frunk carpet is clean and there are no odors. The owners’ manuals are present, only one key FOB is included.
This 911 has clearly been well taken care of throughout its life; and we did the list outlined in the summary paragraph to bring it up to par to give it a clean bill of health on our arrival inspection. The M97 engine starts on command, idles smoothly, pulls very strongly to redline (once the oil temp is warmed up, of course). There are no warning lights. It has no leaks or seeps. The clutch take-up is correct and does not slip. The shifter is tight and precise. The brakes are wonderful, they have been replaced in the recent past. The suspension bushings are tight and the suspension strikes a wonderful balance between compliance and sport. We ensure it passes and pay for emissions in the State of Colorado. We look forward to finding a new owner who will enjoy and care for it for years to come.
